BRAT GATHERING? CANAL BOAT IN EUROPE SUMMER 2013

There has been a good discussion of cruising in Europe. This discussion has been on the Brat site in years past. I suggest the following:

1. On the subject of sending a C-Dory over -- this has been researched in the past. Costs were high. Seemed there were two possibilities:
a) In a container
b) on a barge (with built-on dry dock that sinks, drive your boat onto a platform, tie off, dry dock lifts and off goes the barge across the ocean).
Either way, the round-trip costs seemed prohibitive for those who considered it (including us).
Keep checking -- their may be a better price today.

2. On the subject of buying a boat in Europe, and reselling it after use -- the research here seemed to show many complexities. Could still be researched, but then it seemed difficult (we considered that also).

3. Charter a canal boat and cruise a European canal -- we did that and had a great time with several other couples on the Manchester Ring in central England.

So -- with this as background, we suggest those interested in chartering look into the options, costs and dates.

El and I will volunteer to look into the canals in Scotland, Ireland, and England and come back with a report of our recommendations.
Anyone want to volunteer to check out France? Germany? Netherlands? Elsewhere?

Of course there are great canals in North America -- we have traveled most of them -- and there are good posts by Brats about their experiences on these canals. We suggest that be a different discussion, and that this chat focus on chartering in Europe.

So, we're off to search the internet and vicariously chug with a canalboat in Great Britain in anticipation of a summer cruise. Anyone else aboard to search elsewhere in Europe?

Edit: Decided to move this to a different thread. It's further information on El and Bill's points #1 and #2, and I moved it to the "Cruising Europe" thread.

El, Bill,

You might try

for the Toulouse/Bordeaux region of France. I have never chartered there but it is an area I know very well. The city of Carcassone is worth the visit all on it's own.

For the UK. My brother has friends who have Narrow Boats and I have asked him if they have any "local knowledge" that may be of use regarding the best companies to use etc.

Merv-
Thanks for the post. I'm concentrating on Gt Britain now, but we sure agree that Carcasonne is a treasure. We have spent hours moseying through the town, and would look forward to many hours more. Let me know what you hear from your brother's friends in England

El & Bill, From the UK, My "Bro" suggests following:-

My mate has sold his narrow boat so is no longer active in that world
I would suggest your friends wll do just as well by looking at the web. Try www.waterwaysholidays.com for a pretty comprehensive selection of areas.
If they want a really spectacular trip tell them to look up Froncysyllte. It is a village on the Llangollen canal and there is this ring twitching aquaduct where the canal crosses the Dee valley. It is one boat wide, no fence on one side and yea high. It is called, perversely the Pontcysyllte aquaduct. The village choir is very famous. Good CD ( "Voices of the valley" Fron male voice choir).
The whole area is very scenic and there is a boat hire outfit there.
Tell them that there is a 4mph speed limit on canals so they won't need to be too ambitious about how much ground they can cover, particularly with locks to operate.
Otherwise there are many outlets here in the Midlands and all the way down to London to be found on the web.

Hope this helps but of course if you go to the "Land of my Fathers" you will have to learn Welsh, drink lots of warm beer and sing very long, sad songs

Pob lwc :-)

Carolyn and I are seriously up for this trip. Love to cruise with you guys Sounds great. I was in GB once out of high school for a month and saw just a bit of the hi lights. Really ready to go back. The canals look like the perfect way to see that part of the world. Lets go! The 40 footer looks good smaller is fine too. George and Carolyn

Hmm, maybe I should let go of my (no doubt complicated) ideas about shipping my boat over or buying one there. This type of trip with other C-Brats does sound pretty fun :thup

Been doing some reading on the canals in Scotland. We have traveled along the Caledonian Canal by road, camping. Loch Ness and other beautiful lakes along the huge fault zone that rifts through Scotland. A canal was sliced through this region to help the local economy and connect the Atlantic and the North Sea thru Scotland. It goes right through the Highlands and is an engineering and scenic marvel. One can also stop off at Loch Ness and look for Nessie (we spotted her on a dark and stormy night, while having a nip and camped on the shore, but that's another story).

The canal still operates today. One can charter a boat and drive her (although weather can be rough on the lakes) or board a skipper-provided charter boat for a week-long cruise. This video illustrates the Caledonian canal. A great kick-back enjoy and dream video. We continue researching, pricing and comparing and will let you know our opinion.

Meanwhile, fill a mug, kick-back, and enjoy a cruise on the Caledonian Canal:
