Boat Soap...the GREAT rip off

Fess up time-

Boat washdown soap goes overboard and into the water, of course, but I once set up a one boat soap trail through Heaven. (Huntington Lake, Ca.)

I had just refinished and wet sanded the bottom of my racing sailboat and wanted to keep it really clean (and FAST) for the regatta 300 miles away.

Lacking a bottom cover (later bought one), I sprayed the bottom of the boat with liquid Joy with my spray gun, the idea being we'd wash it off BEFORE putting it into the lake and all the road film would come off the hull.

Turns out my son was sick on the race morning, so we had to rush to get the boat into the water for the races w/o time to wash it.

Left a nice bubble trail for the first 1/2 mile down the lake!

Glad the Enviornmental Police weren't watching!

(I'm a retired science teacher, so have always felt bad abut this incident.)

On a related note- I once coated a dirty anodized aluminum mast with Dawn and let it set for 20 minutes or so before scrubbiong it down.

The Dawn ate some of the gold anodization off!!! Pretty powerful detergent when undiluted!

End of woeful tales.

Joe.

True boat or car wash soap should be much milder than dish soap. Dish soap will not only clean the boat it will strip most waxes off in the process.

If starbright is indeed selling dishwashing soap as a boat wash I would very unhappy to have hours of waxing removed by an hour of washing.

Thanks Stevej.... thats exactally what I thought.... I try to wax my boat often...but removing all my hard work by washing it is wrong...just wrong.

Thanks

Hey Joel.... what does the stuff taste like??? Kinda reminds me of a farmer friend of mine back home in Mt. Juliet where we cruised the Cumberland River. He said his breeding bull was not performing up to standard when the vet came to the farm for some shots and stuff. The vet poured him out about a dozen pills and told him this should help. Sure enough it did. Our bull needed some so I asked him what it was.... He just cocked his head to the side a bit...and said....I daa-know....but it taste like peppermint.

Joel I think it sucks that they did..... That is not price gouging it a straight up lie. It is so unethical it just pisses me off! What a scam. Have you sent them a link to this Thread? It is to bad when bad things happen to good people... sorry that happened to ya. Tony

Sounds like StarBrite is selling Hockey Smokey. I'd avoid the brand.
Now, I have a lot of small black spots all over my white and deck tread on my 22' Cruiser. Is this Fly spit or s--t. What removes it? I've tried a few of these cleaners and some rubbing compound but haven't found anything that completely removes it. These spots are raised so I can scrape most of it off but the stain below is tougher. My Gel Coat is almost gone because of California and Maryland sun which makes matters worst.
Thanks,
Dick

For fly shmutz use castro super clean diluted with water in a old windex bottle with a course scrub brush for the tread. Caution use gloves. Rinse with warm water. Castro super clean will also clean star board stuff well and de-wax a hull with ease. A very good value considering how long a jug lasts.
