As long as there are some spiritual people that believe in right and wrong there still remains hope for society.

The problem is the good people are out-numbered and the number of "takers" is ever increasing. Just look at D.C.

As to what I posted, I am very aware of the laws of WA. State, self-defense etc. I'll leave it at that.

I for one do not, and will not ever believe that the "good people are out numbered". In my experience good out numbers bad by far (I estimate 19:1). I realize that you spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with the bad and hence your views are undoubtedly influenced by those experiences. However, I find it distressing when a law enforcement officer believes that the good people are out numbered.

Also, do a Snopes check or other internet fact checking on the "Obama phone" (from an earlier post of yours in this thread). I see no reason why your politics needed to be injected into this thread.

I hereby nominate Localboy for president !! It should be a nationwide misdemeanor offense to be found with anything smaller than a 38 special on ones person at all times. The blood would run in the streets for a few years but everyone left would be saying please and thank you & there would no longer be a need for prisons. In order for us to consider ourselves, the pinnacle of evolution, we need to make some drastic changes or get in line, drink the coolaid & let the dolphins have a crack at it !

the "Obama phone"

Tell me then why the "poor, disadvantaged and disenfranchised" that I deal with usually have a nicer, newer cell phone than I or my wife does? How can they afford all the cigarettes they are constantly smoking?

I see how it REALLY IS, not what MSNBC or the White House SAYS it is.....

This thread started w/ a boating experience, sort of. Now it has descended into a disagreement, argument, differing of opinion and worst a political debate. I am just giving my real world opinion. The general population has NO idea of the reality; the system is broken and we are all paying the price. I am not being a pessimist. I'm being a realist.

All done..... :|

It's not "now" that it descended, it was when politics were unnecessarily injected into the thread with this post -

Don't mean to burst your bubble...but I have been in LE for over 18 yrs, the last one as a detective. IMO most thieves don't give a rat's ass about how you feel or the effects their criminal activity has on you or anyone else. They only care about themselves; they are evil, selfish and lack empathy. Some I've charged have even bragged about their exploits or had the audacity to consider their thieving as their "work". They will sell your property for 10 cents on the dollar or trade it for dope. They will never have even a tinge of guilt or regret. Their only regret is getting caught and sentenced aka held responsible. But they know that in this once great nation, their acts of cowardice are no big deal. They'll go to jail or prison, make new friends/contacts then come out and start it all over again. It's merely an inconvenience to most. They'll apply for & receive their food stamps, "free" Obama-phones, and medical etc and enjoy their dope in the apt/house you paid for....and the dope they bought was with YOUR stuff....just telling it like I see it daily.

As to deterrence, my advice is this; make it as hard as possible so they go an pick on/steal from someone ELSE. Don't leave stuff in your boat, car, truck etc. Lock your stuff up when possible. Engrave your DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER and a phone number on everything of value. Take digital photos and keep good records of serial numbers. model numbers etc. Get a house alarm. Get a GOOD safe. DON'T BE AN EASY VICTIM!

Another trick, new thing is this http://www.copdots.com/. We have begun looking into this product and it appears pretty handy for LE. But the more people that use it, the better. Is it fool-proof? No. Nothing is. One more thing. Support your local LE and demand that those that make laws provide funding to ENFORCE those laws. We can only do what we can do and the revolving door of prison has to stop.

One more thing; If someone breaks into my house while I'm home...they are leaving in a body bag.

That is all....

Without the stuff in red above, I wouldn't respond to your post. I would ignore the line about the body bag, but none of the rest would cause me to respond. In fact I believe you are correct in stating that most thieves will not feel guilty at all and in suggesting that the best approach is to make your stuff harder to steal than the next guy's stuff. So I actually agree with you on much of your post. It's the stuff I've highlighted in red that's what triggered a response. In particular, I personally believe this is still a great nation (with many things that could be better). Finally, I'll note that one person's "reality" is influenced by their own experiences and others' "reality" may differ due to different experiences.

I feel lots better after, some time ago, deciding to no longer discuss religion, morality or politics...

Try it out.

Aye?

I have to agree with Mark on this one guys ( sorry mark). I have lived a some what colorful life and much closer to the dark side then most would think or then I would like. I have had almost as much interaction with the criminal and welfare element then mark but from the other side and I can tell you that none of them every felt anything when stealing your stuff or hurting other people. You are just in the way of what they want. There is no guilt in taking your stuff. In fact they believe that your stuff is their right. They have convinced them selves that they deserve your stuff and your money and everything the government will give them on your behalf. This is not a left right question. Its about how people think.

That said I believe that most people are decent people, If they were not we would be in a lot more trouble in this country then we are today.

That said I don't take chances with Susan's life or my own. Any one breaking in gets shot. There is no good reason to be in my house with out a invite. Susan's life is worth more then anyone else life. Anyone's.

Careful, you're gonna rustle someone's jimmies by not sticking to the official narrative...

Ya know, I was having problems with cats terrorizing my boat and I ended up scattering around mothballs and haven't had a problem since. Now that I think of it, I haven't had any problems with cat burglars either.....my durn mothballs are under about a foot of snow right now though

I understand how someone can feel about a break in. I have had a truck broken into. Had things stolen, heck just this last week. But the cake, out in the front of my home stood a four foot tall chain saw cut bear with a sign wipe your paws or something like that. One day I come home and begin walking up to my door....what the heck? :disgust Someone had lifted this bear from it's rightful place and taken it with them. What value does a chainsaw carved bear have? Really people? It was disturbing to say the least knowing someone came to my front door of my home and left with something I cherished.
All this conversation has got me thinking, time to install my home alarm and boat alarm. Like it's been said, make it difficult and they will move on to easier targets. As well, light up the place. No thief wants to be around bright lights. Turn on your porch lights - I live in a neighborhood where this is no street lights. Gosh folks - spend the 0.25 and turn on those lights!
I'll get off the soap box now.
Oh - ps
if you break into my home you have threatened me and my family. I don't care why your there. Period.

For you 'quick on the trigger' 'my home is my castle' invasion defenders, here are a couple scenarios I've come across that may make you stop and think before making a big mistake.

#1 An elderly confused 'lost' woman, thinking she was re-enterring her own home late at night, walked into the wrong house. She was shot in the shoulder and survived.

#2 A 20 something year old young man, whose parents thought he was away at college, was partying with friends and decided, unwisely, to 'surprise' his parents and drove home late to see them for the weekend. He was intoxicated, entered and stumbled around the house. The noise awoke his parents. His father shot him dead in the dark coming up the staircase.

Yes, stuff happens. But then, besides the basically innocent victims, think life went on 'as usual' for the two people above who pulled the trigger?

Aye.

And for every one of those truly horrific, unfortunate & heart-breaking stories I can counter with hundreds, if not thousands, of stories of people being robbed, raped, tortured, beaten, killed...all in the "safety" of their homes by the lowest, sub-human excrement on the planet.

It comes down to each person. I'm not advocating to run out, arm yourself and start shooting at anything that moves. Some people should flat out not be near guns; to them guns are "dangerous, unpredictable and scary". (They are not) Some people just don't know how to properly use a weapon, are not properly trained to use a weapon or are too immature or irresponsible to properly use a weapon. But that is not for me to decide. I decide for me and my family.

Me and my family; we are not going to be victims. Period. I am obviously well-trained and my wife was in the army, so she is of the proper mind-set that she will not go without a fight.

Really sorry about the incident, its incredibly frustrating but I commend your perspective and agree. Its the same we took with an auto break-in. If their life is one that has time or need for such vandalism and theft, then it doesn't compare to the wonderful life of a Brat.
