Big Changes Coming

Sorry to see the previous owner not in that boat,

Trust there's still a bit of guilt on my part there, no matter how much he reassures me it was what he wanted to do.

And, he knows the helm is always available to him. He just needs to take a 4.5 hour drive north now. 8)

<stuff clipped>. As long as Mike and I are kicking and reasonably sane (ha!)
That ship may have sailed already.

The C-Brats will never be subject to the whims of nameless, faceless and unreachable overlords who don't have our best interests at heart.

I prefer the named, known and reachable overlords we have had for so many years.

Thanks to you and Mike for all you have done for this group for so long!

PS congrats on the new to you boat. It's good to see that boat in particular remain within the "family".

I've donated to the tip jar a few times, including recently. Not because of a felt obligation, but because the information I have gleaned from this site was worth every penny, and then some! Or because I got something from somebody that said just put a tip in the tip jar. If it buys a few drinks or even a dozen donuts for the sysops, it's worth it! :D Colby

Only thing better then owning a boat is your good buddy owning a boat. and Having your good buddy owning your boat is even better. :smiled

I whole heartedly agree with all the comments. $50 sound good to back up my support for all DaNag and Tyboo do and have done to keep this site up and running. Though a member, I was never a fan of the old C-Dog site and so was super pleased when this site was created back in 03. Now, if only Red Fox would show up……

Gladly sending tip for all the invaluable information and entertainment in the past couple years. This site and it's members have made my long journey and boat maintenance and upgrades easier and safer than trying to puzzle it all out for myself. Kudos to all members and site admins.

Where is the tip jar? I've used it before and now I can't figure out where it is.
Upper left on the Home Page (it says "DONATE" in red) - unless, ironically, as happened on a tablet screen of mine, a pop-up ad covers it up.

I have a Windows desktop. If I click on the Home tab to go to the home page I see this...

No tip jar in upper left, so I think maybe it's behind that ad, so I close the ad and see this...

Still no tip jar. Either that or it's in my blind spot.

BTW I know these images are small, but the C-brats website automatically compressed and resized the hi-res screen shots when I uploaded them.

Work on the migration is progressing, but as expected - it's very complicated. The biggest challenge to the developer has been migrating the photo albums. Forum content is actually pretty straightforward to bring across to the new platform, but those lovely pics we've been collecting for 2+ decades are problematic.

For the nerds/wannabe nerds in the audience - the issue is one of file vs. database design. Our ancient photo albums (Menalto Gallery v1.0) is an entirely file based solution. Having the images being file based is typical, even in modern photo album software - but all the attributes are also in files, not a database where they can be easily manipulated and migrated. Ownership, size, thumbnail info, album and photo relationships and hierarchies, album and photo names and comments - all in files.

All modern photo album software stores these photo and album attributes in a database, so the bulk of the developers time is going to writing a custom importer. It won't be cheap or quick.

None of this migration development work can be easily shown at this point, just described. However, we also have a theming guy working on the look/feel of the eventually converted site - and he just provided some samples you can check out in the Google Photo Album below. The design instructions were to ensure things look familiar, relatively simple but taking advantage of all the new tools and goodies that are to come. We've no sample forum for you to play around in yet, that's awaiting data migration - but the pics will give you an idea of what you'll see when visiting the site once done.

More as it develops!

I have one complaint about the new software.....

Perhaps this is something unique to my system, but as ads come and go while I'm typing a reply or new post, the sudden appearance of an ad "resets" input process in such a way that the input process refuses to accept additional keystrokes (just happened this very second). To recover I have to place the cursor at the end of whatever line I was typing, and then retype any keystrokes I had entered before I noticed this glitch has occurred once again.

This is a separate issue from the site upgrade, as you're seeing this behavior on our current, old system. The "new software" is still a ways off.

Still, know I'm not a fan of how the ads are now working. They annoy the hell out of me (I don't block them, I eat my own dog food) and changes are under consideration.

The new site will have far better ad management, and will have ad-free options - and we'll discuss ideas there as we get closer.

Pretty cool views for the new site.

I am reminded of the Chinese fortune cookie that said "A change for the better will be made against you"!

Seriously, Will (and Tyboo) you know much we appreciate all you have done over all these years since we said goodbye to MSN!

Hope it happens. Would be great to simplify and expand the reach to more folks interested in all things C-Dory. Appreciate you!
