before there were el and bill there was harlan hubbard, "SHANTYBOAT", THE YEAR WAS 1944, HE AND HIS WIFE BUILT A SHANTYBOAT ALONG THE OHIO RIVER JUST EAST OF CINCINNATI, OHIO. they set sail in 1946, south bound, down the ohio, mississippi, all points in between and landed in new orleans, 1385 miles later, march 1950. no i/o, no outboard, just current, wind and oars. one of my favorite reads, "Shantyboat"!
the faster things change to more they remain the same, point at hand, page 200, third paragraph:
"there were reports of severe winter weather from many sections of the country. yet who had been exposed to the elements as much as we? a dread of cold in cities is largely due to the shortage of fuel, its high price, and to newspaper reports which are worse than actual contact with cold and wind."
best regards
