Be careful giving out C-Dory rides.

About 5 weeks ago I received a call from a couple of Scripps Institute of Oceanography professionals asking if they could see a C-Dory, since they were looking for a boat that could do double duty as a pleasure boat as well as working to map San Diego bay under contract to Scripps. They had read about C-Dorys on our Brat site but had never physically seen one.

I told them "Better yet, meet me downtown and I'll take you out and show what they will do."

Off we went for a great day on the water, Chugging about the bay, going offshore, jumping some pretty heavy wakes, going parallel to Navy patrol boat wakes, I showed them all the good and bad points of C-Dorys and the "Jenny B" in particular. They fell head over heels in love and remarked "My god, this boat is set up precisely like we'd want." Coming back to port I began to consider maybe selling them the "Jenny B." I've certainly had difficulty getting out on her - after all, it's a 2005 with just over 100 hours on it, and missing Brat gathering after Brat gathering ain't been fun, I assure you. The last Lake Powell gathering was the straw....

Bottom line? They made me an offer I couldn't refuse - but only if I could wait until they got back from their wedding in Hawaii on the 3rd of October.

Well, they got back a couple of days ago and moved heaven and earth. Drove off with the newly named "Miss Emily" late this afternoon. Their wedding present to themselves, I think. A nice, intelligent, committed couple with level heads and a great attitude. I'd be proud as hell to have them as grandchildren.... So look for posts from nieking and photos of Miss Emily with her new improved lazarette hatches Real Soon Now.

As for me? Once a Brat always a Brat. Wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have Mike, Charlie or Bill to harass. Who knows, if conditions improve in a year or so, maybe I'll get a nice easy to lug 16 footer. Rest assured, I'm with y'all in spirit if nothing else. What a great bunch.

You don't own a C-Dory???

What a pity.

Wow - that one smacked us upalongside the head for sure. Good for you, I guess, and great for crew of the new Miss Emily, I'm certain.

You ain't going anywhere, though. Won't let it happen.

Damn Don......What are your little cousins up here in Wa. State going to say about that. As for me, I'm shocked that you made such a move, but I certainly do hope that you stay on the site and help keep us in line. That's another one of the great things about these boats, they are so easy for others to fall in love with them, hence easy to sell in a "depressed boating market".

Hey Brother Don! Thanks for you and Chris meeting me in the waters there in San Diego on your boats & lunch. Yall made for a great day on the water and it was fun to see yall on your boats rather than just at the tables and events around the Seattle Boat Show over the years.

Be no doubt about it man, hop on one of those cheap Southwest Airline air busses into Nashville, and I can have you back on the water almost any day. Keep your eyes out for any of the Cumberland River gatherings and you will be welcome aboard Aloysius on the trip. As you know, Sherryl still works to support my boats and boating, so I often travel with folks who can make the trip. God, you gotta love a Woman like that. I do not know why she just looks at me every now and then with those big beautiful eyes and says something sweet like...."Dear..isn't it time for you to take another boat trip for about a week!!"

It looks by their trade that the couple who are enjoying your boat will love her and put her to work for the good of all our boating. Great deal.

Have enjoyed our many, many emails Brother! Cheers! :beer :teeth :thup

Dagnabbit Don, what have you done!!!??? Seriously, good for you, glad you found her a good home at least. If any more folks come your way like that, don't send them to the Right Coast, I wanna keep my boat! We'll miss you as an owner but not as a Brat 'cause you're not going anywhere, we'll see to that!

Well, damn, Uncle! You know there already is a 16 in the family, you are welcome to borrow her any time! It looks like Jenny B will certainly be getting put to good use, and we hope to see the new owners on the water one of these days, maybe Lake Powell next year (Uncle, you missed one awesome trip, as I'm sure you know).

Thanks guys. It took some serious self control not to turn into a blubbering old fool as I watched my baby towed away. Nice to know I can bum rides from Brats and even "sneak" a 16 out alone once in a while.

Yah, Pat, I know all about the Powell trip. It was a huge factor in my decision. Waterboarding isn't the worse torture for a C-Dory owner, ya know.

I hate vicarious cruises but you couldn't have asked for a better "Fearless Leader" to give you the best time you'll ever have in fresh water. Chris gave me my "first ride" in a C-Dory. Oh, the buyers (Ernie and Liz) have an open offer - we're welcome on the ex Jenny B anytime, so that helps a lot.

Don --

Our high regard for you is because of you!! -- not the boat you used to own. That was merely the excuse to meet. Stay in touch with your friends in the pub -- and we look forward to meeting at future Gatherings.

OK Don, the next step is to check the "for sale" listings for a 16 footer. You know (and we know) you're gonna do it. Do not wait a year!. Go ahead, pull out your 'wants' and 'needs' lists. There, right at the top of the 'needs', see? If you have any questions, just ask. We're always here.
