Bad news about BIS Portal

Bad news to any of us who use the BIS Portal website.

According to the website, they lost the ability to provide both wind and temperature forecasting due to the loss of their data source and absence of any funding to replace it.

See their website at http://bis_portal.apl.washington.edu/bis_portal_app.php

This is a shame because their detailed wind data, which allowed one to narrow into any area in the Puget Sound, was a tremendously useful function for seemingly very accurate forecasting of wind conditions out to (I believe it was) a 36 hour range.

Take care.

Not sure why my post didn't go thru. I know the 'Preview' function was not working for me even though Spell Check did.

Anyway, I removed the URL for the BIS portal website and it seems to work now.

Dan,

I noticed the absence of BIS function too, after clicking on it about 3 times thinking it just didn't load right. BUMMER. It was my favorite site for good detail, pretty reliable accuracy and ease of use. Wonder if there is any chance of getting it back?

I have passed their link out to a bunch of other boaters. Wish I knew more about who, what, where and why.

Thanks for posting about it.

this is to bad. I used the site a lot. its all info that can be had other places but they, the developers, presented that info in a real nice easy to use and understand format. To bad they did not spend more time promoting the site.

Charlie, Thanks, and I'm going to do the same. Wonder if there is anything we (C-Brats) could do to get them back?

Try this url. It worked for me while the old one did not.

On Edit: Nope, that's a higher level site but couldn't get to BIS. Sent them a note though and told them there was something amiss.

Charlie

There is a nice place for a short message if you click on the contact, (upper right corner) button. Let's send them a message about how good the site was and how they are missed.

Thanks,
