ARE 200 hp Suzukis too much for the 255 Tomcat?

Hi,

Well I have tried the 175 HP Suzukis on Loki after having the 135 Hondas. I am still trying different props, but WOW what a difference. I did a heavily loaded 500 mile trip with props that were too small, 15 1/4 X 19 three bladed SS. I could easily over rev. But still quite a difference.

I just switched to 15 X 21 pitch 3 bladed SS and my gas mileage increased and my top speed increased. Top end is 41 Knots. Gas mileage was a little over 2nm/gallon with full gas tanks.

Still testing will let you know. I want to try 16 inch props and 4 bladed props.

But Now I have a bigger problem that I will start a new thread with. Salt water is getting inside my cowling.

Redbaronace,
In my opinion, a competent saltwater outboard manufacturer would also be able to make pretty good mixing boards, jet boats, pianos, motorcyles, cellos, ATV's, piccalos, snowmobiles, violas and stereos (but NOT jet aircraft or cars or trains or bowling balls).
Look for 3 tuning forks on the cowling.
Happy Boating!

I love to hear the conversation on outboards and adding power to get more speed. However, one of the things I have not heard much on is any opinion on make the boat lighter.
For example the Suzuki 140hp is about 80lbs per engine lighter (I think). Adding weight to a cat has always been one of the limitations. If you took 160 lbs off the back of the boat would it go fast enough and how much speed would you loose vs the 175 or 200? Would you burn less fuel with the 140's or would have the same limitations as the Honda 135?
I am new to outboards and with the little experience I have with the Verado 150's on my Tomcat they seems fast enough but wondered what I would loose in speed with less HP and less weight?
Just a different variable to consider.

To be honest, I don't think 160lbs will make much of a difference. When I go out tuna fishing, I leave with full fuel tanks (150 gal * 6lb/gal =800lbs), an additional 400-500# of ice and about 4-5 coolers (not to mention all the rods and reels). With that extra 1300+ pounds in the cockpit, the boat runs about 2-3 MPH slower but it does handle much "heavier".
