Anyone been fishing Puget Sound lately

Boated an 18 LB king this morning between Pt Defiance & Owen's beach, about half an hour later lost one that felt at least mid 20s off the slag pile! Got it up within sight of the boat and zzzzzzzzing peeling line straight down, had 15 lb test & didn't wanna get too nuts on the drag & it spit the hook, probably dove a good 75 ft back down, straight down. Ah well...

Woohoo! =)

Susan and I hit point no point agian today. We managed one 12 lbs king and susan got another the same size that was wild. both fish were hooked on the sonic edge and a uv flasher. This combo is fast becoming my go to set up. side note is that I lot one at the boat ,but I think it was pink. Anothr guy at the ramp brought in a pink while I was loasing the boat back up.

Fished Midchannel Bank last Friday for one 12 lb. king; headed over the Whidby after the bite died for one released blackmouth and one takedown out in silver-land that turned into an LDR...

This morning off the beach heard about a guy just around the corner who released a wild 20-lb king while another got a large silver...supposedly 15 lb.

Reports from Marrowstone say lots of fish off the beach.

Weather report says quite a bit of wind coming...

Tom, way to go. Do you know if the season will last until Friday?

We had to cancel our Ucluelet/Tofino trip so it looks like I might be going up to PNP that day. Have you been fishing on the outgoing tide, Pilot Point to PNP? How deep? I might have an open seat, PM me if interested.

There was talk of closing Area 9 for kings as of today, but there is still some wiggle room. Here's the release from the WDFW site:

Chinook salmon fishing in Marine Area 9 remains open; fishery managers to assess catch daily

OLYMPIA – Fishery managers have decided to keep the Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) sport fishery open to the retention of hatchery chinook salmon for now and continue to assess the catch daily, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.

Late last week, biologists projected that the mark-selective fishery for hatchery chinook in Marine Area 9 could close at the end of today. However, after reviewing the catch estimates, there is enough room under the quota to continue fishing, said Steve Thiesfeld, Puget Sound recreational salmon manager for WDFW.

“We’re nearing the quota, so we are monitoring this fishery very closely,” Thiesfeld said.

The mark-selective fisheries for hatchery chinook in marine areas 9 and 10 (Seattle/Bremerton) are managed under a combined quota of 7,000 chinook. Of that quota, only 1,700 chinook can be harvested in Marine Area 10, where chinook salmon retention closed Saturday evening.

The closure in Marine Area 10 for chinook salmon does not affect recreational fisheries for coho salmon and other species.

As of July 29, the estimated harvest of hatchery chinook in marine areas 9 and 10 is 6,500 fish.

Thiesfeld reminds anglers that regulations vary for inner Elliott Bay, Sinclair Inlet and public fishing piers in marine areas 9 and 10.

Anglers should check for updates on WDFW’s Fishing Hotline (360-902-2500) or the department’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/regs/fishregs.htm.

Well sark just called from p-n-p and the quota is unaffected so far. He has hit one pink. I hit a pink the other day. no one is targeting pinks right now but a few are getting caught by king gear. I think that if some one started targeting pinks right now that they could limit out. i will be in and out of the water for the next few weeks and plan to tye up some pink lures tonight. 4 pinks each a day is a lot of smoked fish.

We fished Possesion today and only had a few shakers. at the Everett dock the fish counters said that only about 10 fish had been recorded as of 3:30 pm when we pulled out.

sark called and is killing them out there. only one keeper but 6 natives to the boat and may more long line releases. I am sure he will post later but I cant help being happy for him.

The coho and cutthroat fly fishing has been good in the south south the last two days. Caught this one on the West side of the Narrows near Gig Harbor. Robbi

Tom--SHhhh. Just kidding, Fish PnP today, with the wife and kids, had some issues with bad realese clips but once I got that worked out it was on fire, probably hooked into 15-18 kings altogether in about 4 hours, multiple doubles etc... Landed probably about 10-12 of the fish hooked, some real beauties, but most had one too many fins. 2-3 were high teens low 20's, one we lost right at the boat was bigger, and my wife had on a monster that we lost after about 20 mins of fighting it, It just kept peeling line over and over, I really wish we would have seen that one just to know the size, you never know, but I think it was a very large fish. We got two hatchery fish that we kept about 7 and 13 lbs, and countless memories. My 6 year old, fought half the fish and finally got a keeper to the boat all by himself. Truly an unbeleivable day, definitly one of the best days I've had. I love this fishery, and I am hoping it stays open at least until wednesday so I can get out again. I can't see it making it to the weekend. Although when we got in the fish checker had check 26 boats himself and only seen 6 fish. I saw Sensei heading in when we were going out, in the mukilteo area. Now to the details. We were fishing a green splatterback coho killer, behind a green flasher, and a green ace hi fly behind a chrome flasher, 110-140 feet of water right on the bottom most of the time. Both setups produced equally well. All the fish I have caught out there in the last two weeks have had 4-5 inch herring in their stomachs. get out there if you can!!!

Alas, we can no longer keep Chinook in Area 9 as of midnight. :cry

Chinook salmon fishing in Area 9
will close at end of the day July 31

OLYMPIA – The recreational fishery in Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) will close to the retention of hatchery chinook salmon at the end of today (July 31), when the catch is expected to reach the season quota for that area, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

They told me not to bother. The Chambers Bay kings were too difficult to catch on a fly. So of course, I gave it a try. Yesterday I hooked into two, one took me 150 yards into my backing. He was just headed "out"! I lost them both, but it was enough to bring me back today. And guess who came along? Cordell. First time fishing in C-Run for him. Too bad he didn't stick around another 10 minutes. I hooked my first fish today right after I took him back to the dock. I was anchored up in the current and there was no way I could hold the fish. He really ran to deep water. So I rigged up my anchor to a float that I could deploy if I hooked up. A few minutes later I hooked another, and I managed to uncleat the anchor and was able to at least put up a fair fight. The fish was on the darker side, but was still a fighter. Way into the backing again, but this time I got the fish back to the boat. Three looks at the net, and three more runs. Then I was able to get it in the net. Great fun. Hope Cordell is there to catch the next one.

Nice going and even nicer picture. Sometime I should get you in my boat so I can get properly schooled on how to fish salt with a fly rod. I've fished streams for trout and lakes for bass and pan fish with the fly rod but haven't ever used it in the salt. You clearly have it figured out...

Robbi-

Nice going!

And good sportfishing too!

It's nice to hear from someone not trying to just pack the freezer as tight as possible!

Joe.

:D
If you want to fly fish puget sound (or the straits) and have a good shot at catching a salmon, NOW is the time. If you have a 6, 7, or 8 weight rod,(6 is ideal) a reel with a good drag, go find a pod of pinks and throw a pink fly their way. Talk about a great fish on a fly rod! If you don't know where the pinks are, go to any beach with fishermen lined up way to close to have any fun landing a fish, and start looking for fish out of the way of their buzz bombs. Most beach fishers fish points of land, but pinks can usually be found in the bays on either side of the points, especially the closer they get to their home rivers. Unlike kings and silvers, pinks will keep on chasing flies readily during their waiting period. The pink run this year is huge. I don't think that we will see a run like this one again for many years-if ever.

I usually have an open seat. Robbi
