Any R-21EC's or R25's in Alaska?

Been a member of this board for a long time, but don't post often. I'm ashamed to admit that I (sometimes) don't even check this board on a regular basis. :oops:

Anyway, back to to subject of my rare post. Does anybody know of any Ranger Tugs in Alaska? I see that AK Mining & Diving is listed as a dealership for them. I guess my concern is how they would perform against the heavy tidal currents we have up here (especially in Southcentral Alaska).

I'm thinking that these boats would be more subject to having to plan to run with the tide, as opposed to a faster outboard powered boat. I'm OK with that, as I grew up commercial fishing where anything over 12 kts was considered a fast boat and we always tried to run with the tide!

I guess my main question is if anybody has one (or even run one) in heavy tidal currents what their experiences have been.

I don't know if there are any of other tug models up there, but Dusty (Les Lampman, Sr.) said a few years back that he knew of a group of 21 foot Ranger Tug owners that yearly made a trip up through SouthEast Alaska from the Washington area.

Perhaps he could put you in contact with some of their members that could discuss the suitability of the 21 for strong tidal waters.

Thanks for the reply. I've read the article that is posted on the Ranger's homepage about the three that went from Washington to Alaska. It's a good article, but would like more opinons on how the tugs handle the water and currents rather than a travel log.

I've wanted a C-Dory for a long time, then I found the Ranger when C-D and Ranger collaborated on the R25 - by reading about it on this site, of course! My family commercial fishes in Bristol Bay and it reminds me of a smaller version of the boats we run out there. I fell in love with the little R21 almost instantly because of the similarity.

The gillnet boats in Bristol Bay are 32' x 10-12' with some going as wide at 14-16'! In Bristol Bay, the maximum length vessel for commercial fishing is 32ft, so that's why builders started going so wide.
 
There are at least two R-25's (one is owned by a local C-Brat) that go out of Seward and Whittier. I was at Alaska Mining & Diving three weeks ago to look at the R-21EC that they have there. It had been sold, so there is at least one in the Anchorage area. Hope this helps.

Didn't know AKM&D had any in stock. I may have to stop by next time I'm in Anchorage. It seems all my trips to Anchorage are rushed though. Wouldn't have anything to do with only having ONE store in Valdez... :evil:
 
As far as I know there are three Ranger 25s in southcentral Alaska. I believe two sail out of Whittier. I am taking mine out tomorrow for its initial sea trial and will keep it in Seward. I realize I didn't answer your question about how they will run with the tide but thought you would like to know there are Rangers here in Alaska

I'd be interested to hear how your 25 performs in Seward. I know the afternoons can get pretty choppy there. I used to go down for the Silver Salmon Derby every year growing up.

There is a R25 at AMD right now. I looked at it two days ago. It has the 100 Yanmar. It is a fine looking boat. If it had outboards I would be on it in a minute.

OK - this is way too weird...I just got off the phone 30 minutes ago with my wife who is in Anchorage right now. She went to AMD today to look at C-Dorys and saw the R25 there and fell in love with it. I, in turn, had the same questions about how it would handle the Alaskan tides. Then I tune inot this C-Brats and see this thread right away!

Anyway, I'll be following it closely to see what happens with C-Suite! Hey, let us all know how that goes out of Whitteir!
 
This is the better half ( :) ) of the C Suite family. We've been out of Seward a couple of times this summer and our Ranger has handled quite well. Admittedly we have not ventured out much past Resurrection Bay, although we did spend one night out in Driftwood Bay. Our last boat was a 23' Olympic and the handling on the Tug is like night and day compared to that boat.

On another note, we need a kicker motor and I'm curious as to what size many of you have installed on your R-25's. Would a 9.9hp work?
