Another Broken Heart

Pat and Patty, Good job getting the right thing done in the right time. Yes it pays to paying attention. You will be in my prayers, for healing and strength in the recovery and rehab days to come.

We did a sleep study on a young man ~40 the other night. During the sleep study we monitor the heart for the full 7-9 hours. (A routine screening EKG has an acquisition time of between 3-30 seconds.) He has had NO cardiac history, ever. We saw some FLB's, (funny little beats) called PVC's, (premature ventricular beats) at the rate of an average of 20+ per minute, with many runs of every other beat as as PVC, (bigeminy) some in the 2 - 5 minute length. This is the most PVC's I have ever seen. Any one of those PVC's, if it had hit at just the right time, could have stopped that heart. The patient was referred immediately to a cardiologist. The patients comment, "Oh I feel kind of funny sometime, but it's normal" NOT -- pay attention to your body, and Check it out.

Glad your still with us Pat. Looking forward to seeing you two on teh water.

Hi Pat

Glad all is well, it can be very scary when it all hits at once, especially the trip down the hall from the cardiologist to the cath lab. I had my adventure in Sept. with a 3 vessel bypass

Harvey , I love the FLB's funny little beats as the description for PVC's.

Here is with Pat a speedy recovery.

Pat! Thank goodness you're okay!

Patty, Thank you for letting us know about the situation. As I said on FB I knew something wasn't right when I didn't see any posts from Pat on the C-Brats.

Let's not forget Baxter, he needs a special hug, too.

Not to worry PAT... Our little dog had a bad heart when she was born...(my Daughters dog)... we had only had her several weeks when the Vet found it.....so ole Dad came up with the $5000 for Angioplasty and she came thru it fine... that was 3 years ago and lots of butt sniffing since... she is totally a new dog... (get the drift).

So....No dinner table treats...dog food only...a nice walk everyday...and you'll live a long life.....

I understand after surgery you will feel like a new man...honest..

Seriously, I am pleased you are doing well and found it early...

Pat & Patty – more often than not, I am late to catch up with the going ons of this site. If Joel had not added to this thread, I probably would have missed it.

I am glad things worked out for you. By now you are probably out jogging. After reading all the stories on this thread, sometimes I think I should have another physical. I will be 70 in a couple of months and I guess someone my age should get checked out at least every five years.

Pat & Patty take care of yourselves. We need both you on this site.

Just returned from Rogerbum's 50th birthday party at Page Winery in Woodinville - nicely catered with a fair amount of cheeses and fatty meats. I MOSTLY was good, veggie tray, shrimp and some humus and pita bread, I confess though I did have one little slice of salume and one - just one - slice of pizza. And a couple of glasses of red wine! Nobody had to slap me!

Diet and exercise definitely! Studying up on the Mediterranean diet and will get back to walking Baxter next week, then add in kettlebells again, and try to get in a little bicycling.

We are so glad to hear that all is well and you are getting stronger and stronger. Keep up the good work with rehab and diet.

Keeping up the recovery! Back to work Monday, was able to put on my own socks yesterday (this is just a flexibility issue limited by pain where they assaulted my groin!). Plan to start walking Baxter again next Monday!

Pat - a suggestion, about diet.

My cardiologist (nicknamed the cooking cardiologist, who has a popular heart-healthy cookbook and teaches heart-healthy cooking classes with a nutritionist [we took them]) said I had to alter my diet, and our son Scott found he also had circulation problems, we shook hands - made a deal to stay "on track" without exceptions - and when you give your word to a kid, and shake on it -- that did it. I can honestly say I've kept my side of the deal.

Might be a way for you to totally give up those saturated fats and cholesterol-rich stuff.

Also, by the way, eating heart-healthy can be delicious and satisfying. (Just a lot harder when you eat out - salt, cream, eggs, etc. in so many restaurants).

Pat,

Glad to hear you are recovering and that the "assault to your groin" is mending; and from what I understood from Joel's message (SEA3PO) it's only a matter of time before you'll be out and about butt sniffing. I might be a little confused about the last part...

Seriously, your swift recovery is in our prayers. What you do once you've recovered is up to you!

Pat, glad to hear you are up and around again. I started walking again a few weeks ago. I hate running for no reason and with my schedule and the weather I kept making excuses not to run/walk. I have a treadmill but hate to stare at a wall while running. So I placed a shelf in front of the treadmill and no watch NetFlex on the lap top while walking of 3 miles. Some days I walk twice. Its really working out for me and I am walking/running a lot more.

Cant help you on the diet part because I have always eaten healthy IMHO. I eat a lot of chicken, fish and beef, veggies, and little salt. My biggest tip is to lay off the sauce. BBQ, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. I have never been one to dip every bite into twice as much volume of sauce as what is being dipped. just eat it all plain and with out salt. My problem is portion size. I love to eat a whole chicken for lunch. Now I just eat a half smoked chicken for lunch everyday.

Hey Pat,

Dee and I just read your article in Norwesting. Nice job. So it's been a week or so since I actually logged on C-Brats. I wanted to see if there was anything on the site about the article you wrote. Instead I found this post! I'm glad you're doing better and hope you continue to improve. Take care, Don

Aha! So it is out! I have been sitting on that one since they told me they would be publishing it back in January. I didn't want to say anything until it was actually published, because, well, you never know. Guess I need to get down to West Marine to grab a few copies!

Tom-I'm glad to hear you're walking 3 miles a day. I'm only up to two miles a day every day, but I'm probably 30+ years older than you. I use a treadmill at a local fitness center I like to go every morning at about 0530. I don't go later mostly because there is doctors' office across from the gym and I don't like view of old guys in wheelchairs being pushed in by their healthier wives. Portion size is my downfall. I guess I'm lucky I don't live closer to Golden Corral and the Jumbo Buffet.

Pat- I'm really happy that you are healing well. Pay attention to "Nature"s way of telling you to slow down". These later years can be very happy and rewarding. But you already know that. All the best to you.

What kinda deal is that...."Back to Work Monday"....doesn't the city let you off on Washington's Birthday like all the schools do....I think you oughta talk to the City Attorney and get that changed as its suppose to be a Holiday! (Don't feel bad, I work Monday also).

Now about the "socks". Years ago I worked with a guy whose wife would put his socks on his feet before she awakened him to go to work. It was their way of allowing him to sleep in a bit longer.....TRUE STORY...his wife verified it! So that being said....maybe you should try THAT out..... .....LOL

Glad you are doing better!

It was back to work LAST Monday, I do get next Monday off...
