Anchorage AK Visit

My Wife and I are planning a visit to Anchorage AK. A dear friend is getting married. They'll be busy before and after the wedding. We're renting a motorhome, not towing my C-Dory from Maine, and have a short stay. Is there any special places we should visit while in or around Anchorage. We've never been there. Unfortunately our trip is over the July 4th holiday so most popular camping areas will be full. We're meeting friends with another motorhome and it's blind leading blind. We'll get some direction from the wedding couple but looking for any advice.

Thanks for any input.

There are lots of places to go from the Anchorage area especially when motorhome equipped. The Kenai Penninsula is a good start, head down to Homer perhaps. Denali National Park is just noth about 150 miles or so and a good road trip. Depends on how much real time you have. Could take the ferry (with or without the motorhome) to Valdez and back. Take a look at a book store for the "Alaska Milepost" guide book. It has every venue and every mile marker listed in the whole state. Lots of info for the $. Look up a few C-Brats on line before you go. Maybe you will get some invites to boat or fish. Sorry, can't help you unless you come to Juneau.

It's too bad your stay will be so short as Alaska is a BIG place and she makes it very easy for us locals to entertain folks from "outside". Please be aware that not only will the camp grounds be full, but all 3 of our roads will be full as well. Be careful! I agree with Doc, the Mile post guide book is a good thing and you can order online and have one prior to leaving home if you choose. If not Walmart here has them as well. You will be here between fish runs for the most part so from a purely tourist standpoint I too would opt for driving down to the Kenai peninsula. You can stop at the Crow Creek mine in Girdwood and Portage glacier visitor center along the way. You can go through the tunnel to Whittier and get a peek at Prince William Sound. You can go to the Sea Life center and Exit glacier in Seward. Wow I've used up 2 days already. Continuing on to Kenai and Homer will add another couple days and are great if you have the time. Bring plenty of film! Mike on Huda Thunkit

Dick,

We are having our get together the Saturday before in Prince William Sound. I don't have any seats available but there might be someone with space open. If you are around for the weekend after the 4th, we can plan a trip fishing out of Homer or somewhere in the Sound.

Seward is a fun place to visit over the 4th. You can watch the mount marathon race, and all the festivities associated with that, the sea-life center, exit glacier, perhaps take a day cruise to Kenai Fiords. It's a much easier drive from Anchorage than Homer - 3 hours or so. Wish I could be there myself!

Thanks for the info. Tom, Thanks for the invite but we're going to a wedding on the 8th. I'd like to see your C-Dory. I too have a 22' Cruiser. Bought her new in 1990. I checked the C-Brat membership and it looks like a lot of C-Dory's in and around Anchorage. There's only three here in the Piscataqua River which separates Maine and New Hampshire. All three 22'. Most of the locals travel, via trailer, with other C-Dory owners from New England to various points in and around New England. They have some great times. I've yet to join them because I've been updating my trailer and my C-Dory. I've seen some of the pictures and it's neat to see several C-Dory's all in a line traveling together.
We're looking forward to our trip to Alaska. You have a large tide I imagine. We have a ten foot tide here. I'll be checking out some of the marina's.
Maybe we'll see each other in our travels.
Take Care,
Dick

I would also recommend heading South and looking at Girdwood, Portage and then going to Seward. Seward will be VERY crowded on the 4th (Parade, mountain run w/600+ entrants, fishing crowds etc...) but the crowds will rapidly disperse on the 5th. I would recommend going to Seward on the 5th or later unless you wish to witness a crowded spectacle. Not that I don't like the crowds or the spectacle. I'll be part of the Seward festivities on the 4th and I'll have my '82 22' angler there over the 4th of July weekend/holiday. If you end up there and you see my boat it would be VERY easy to talk me into a C-Dory ride.

If you are in Anchorage toward the end of the week after the 4th we'll try to get together. I'll be getting back on the afternoon of the 4th and be in town until Friday. I'll PM you with how to contact me.

Thanks for your responses. I can't respond via e-mail because of a virus so I'll keep my eye on any C-Dory I see, "Of Course". My Wife and I have plans on the 8th of July and will be with another couple so boat rides are out. I appreciate the offers. Looking forward to our first time visit to AK.
Thanks again,
Dick
