Adjusting Pantographic Wipers

We have AFI pantographic wipers on our boat and they are now in need of adjustment. Unfortunately, I can find no written guidance regarding how to adjust them and Marinco/AFI has none to offer. I've found on this forum guidance to adjust the degree of sweep, but the issue with ours is the lack of pressure on the windshield. Specifically, when the wiper blades sweep across they seem to only touch a small central portion of the window, thus leaving obscuring water on the rest. Anyone have experience with making the blade fit tighter to the window so when it sweeps across it is in full contact and clears the water away? Our rubber blades are fine, just need better tension for proper contact.

There is an internal spring in the wiper arm that provides tension. As far as I know, that spring isn't adjustable.

If you aren't getting the blade to sit down on the glass, you likely have a problem with the hinge (near the motor, not the blade) binding up. this could be due to corrosion or other gunk build up in the hinge. Or, the hinge itself could be wearing out.

I'd try working the hinge back and forth as you apply some spray cleaner/lube to it. A lot of folks would probably use WD-40, or something similar. Personally, I would try using some Break-Free CLP, because I usually have a can or two available.

If you can't get it to work to your satisfaction, it may be time to replace the wiper arm...
 
As mentioned above, the way the wiper blade is held on the glass is by a spring. Since those wipers are at the front of the boat, they see a lot of salt water and the pivot points get corroded and the spring can't pull the arm down.

I use silicone spray because it dries and doesn't leave an oily mess. Spray the pivot points at the top of the arm as you work the arm up and down. Also spray the drive shaft where it comes out of the motor/cabin front, as the motor is running. Salt gets in there, too.

Removing the arms is a bear. Take good care of them.
