Ace Insurance

Several folks on the Trawlers list have been saying favorable things about Ace for their yacht policies. I am currently insured with Markel, through Anchor Marine in Bellevue, but Ace's marine division is represented by an agent here in Anacortes so I am going to check that out at renewal time. Ace is apparently a large international insurer based in Switzerland.

I, too, have insurance through Markel - about the only carrier I could find that would insure a small boat through Canadian and Alaskan coastal waters. I have no complaints, except it's a little pricey. Let us know what the Place with the Friendly Hardware Man has to say.

I had ACE on my previous boat, yacht policy with price about 400, when i bought the C-Dory they wanted over 600, so switched to Chubb. I never had a claim, however when I canceled my policy they were very prompt to send my refund.

I read the above last week, and it raised a red flag for me - I've been with Progressive for many years, and I know many other C-Brats have been as well.

I knew my existing WA policy stated waters within 75 miles of the continental US and Canada were covered, but my policy is up for renewal next week - so I just called Progressive. I was informed those terms have not changed.

For me, one of the major issues was whether the carrier would write riders to cover me in Mexico or the Bahamas. The agent told me that Markel would and that Progressive wouldn't. There were other factors as well, but that was a major one.

if your policy is with progressive insurance and you have an interest of extending your cruise beyond the 75 mile off u.s. coastal waters, you can apply for the "coastal navigation endorsement" once applied, that rider will change the 75 miles to 125 miles! same restrictions, off u s waters including canada, bahamian waters, puerto rico, virgin islands, and guam.

I don't know about Progressive - can't remember whom all I contacted about going to Alaska - but sometimes "continental" is used as shorthand for "lower 48" or "contiguous."

I would just caution anyone going North to make sure of their coverage, if insurance is important to you. Much better to ask the specific hard question before, rather than after. ("Yes, your policy does cover flooding from broken pipes, just not those pipes.")

Most places when one say Contenental US that is the lower 48. My policy is written giving me the dates I can travel ie year round Canada south of Pt Hardy then from I think it is April can travel Alaska, so make sure you read the fine print of the policy.

I have used Allstate for my C-Dory since 1991 and now for my trawler.

They cover both US, Canadian, and Alaska waters. Good for coastal cruising from the Puget Sound thru SE Alaska.

Premiums have been acceptable and I have no experience with their claims dept, as I haven't had any.

Most places when one say Contenental US that is the lower 48.

While I agree people often use "Continental US" with the intention of excluding AK, such usage is not technically correct. As mentioned earlier, "contigious" would be the proper term.

Still, I considered this when calling Progressive, and was informed they use the term correctly - to them, Continental US includes AK.

Regardless, you make a good point RE the "fine print" in the policy details - I just downloaded my policy, and it contains the following, which confirms what the representative told me. And in fact, it includes Hawaii as well - which makes sense, as Progressive writes boat policies in all 50 states:

POLICY PERIOD AND TERRITORY

This policy applies only to accidents and losses occurring during the policy period shown on the declarations page and which occur within:

1. a state, territory, or possession of the United States of America, or a province or territory of Canada, including their in-land lakes, rivers, and navigable waterways;
2. the Great Lakes; or
3. ocean waters 75 nautical miles or less from the coast of either the United States or Canada, but not including the territory or territorial waters of any country other than the United States or Canada

Additionally, with respect to Warren's comments about Mexico - here's what my Progressive policy says about that:

INSURING AGREEMENT - MEXICO COVERAGE

In addition to the territory specified in Part VIII - General Provisions, if you pay the premium for Collision Coverage and Comprehensive Coverage, coverage under this Part IV shall apply to any loss meeting the requirements for coverage under this Part IV that occurs within any state, territory, or possession of Mexico, including ocean waters within 75 nautical miles of its coast. Payment for any loss covered under this Part IV that occurs in Mexico will be made in the United States. If a covered watercraft must be repaired in Mexico in order to be returned to the United States, we will pay only for those repairs that must be performed in Mexico in order to return the covered watercraft to the United States and we will not pay more than the reasonable cost for such repairs usually charged at the nearest port of call in the United States where the repairs could have been made.

This Mexico Coverage does not apply if liability insurance from a licensed Mexican insurance company is not in force at the time of loss.

I'm using Allstate and they are insuring the boat and I even keep it in Canada in the summer. They are charging me about $500, and it includes towing, $10K for electronics + $15K motor and $40K hull, with replacement coverage. Now I have never filed a claim, so who knows whether they will give me a hassle if/when I do, but it’s seems good to me.

Anyone ever have Allstate and have any problems with Canada or the policy in general?
