Hey Matt! Great idea!

Those Cape Dory 28's are a real find for 1/2 the price of a new boat, and every bit as good (if you watch out for the best ones)!!!

If I were in larger waters and on the East Coast, I'd be the first in line to bid!

Some get the Buyers Itch with Full Blown Hives to jump into a new boat right off the assemably line, but a First Class Quality Classic is often a better boat at a reduced price that doesn't have to be sorted out as much as a new one, and you have half the money left to enjoy your new ride and make it fit your exact needs! The C-Dory is the perfect example!

As in anything else, taking your time to find out everything and think it through avoids the simple mistakes of a case of "Having of the Hots"!

Seeker, I did price the CD25 and found it to be comparably priced to the 22' Orca and therefore about 30% less less than 24' Orca or Seasport. I am not including taxes (a hefty 9% in WA state), electronics, or other rigging in this comparison. Is that how folks are getting to $115k for a CD25? If so, I would therefore STRONGLY second SeaWolf on the value of a good used boat. Our 8 year old 22 is a gem, we couldn't be happier, AND I'm apparently out less than taxes and rigging on a new CD25 :xnaughty

It all started when I got the crazy idea that I would like to have a protected helm station as my bowrider provides me with no protection during those predictable Florida afternoon thunderstorms. Hence, the pilot house concept.

Then, the issue of ride quality in small chop came up. Seems to be a contradictions between Dory owners as to smoothness of ride in the C25 hull design. A Cape Dory 28 was suggested.

Then, the issue of speed came up. While I don't need Cigarette speed, I don't have the time ( or patience ) for a 12 knot boat. Hence, the Orca suggestion.

Now we come to the money part. I had no idea what Dory's cost but when I priced them (new) they seemed to be in the $75k range. Reasonable.
When I looked at the Orca, I almost fell over.

So, here I am, back looking at the C25, The 26 CapeCrusier and others like them...

I will take my own advice on the Cape Dory. It is simply too good to pass up. I looked at a Nomad 25 recently for ideas on making a boat self contained, and I think I can take their simple boot exhaust idea (just an exhaust tube out the side) and use the same 3000 Honda generator they use to make one of these fully self contained. Been looking for a (house) boat to keep down at Lake Okeechobee, but for less I could have far more capability with one of these.
 
AFineRide, thanks for sharing your thinking! My wife and I went through an almost identical thought pattern during our boat shopping experience. We started our search with CD's based on price but didn't like the ride at deep-Vee speeds (I am a wake-jumper at heart :smiled ). Then we sea trialed the deep-Vee's, loved the ride, but couldn't take the price. So I researched this site more, sea trialed the CD again at the proper cruising speed and found the ride to be just fine. So we bought one.

Are you sure you can't take the slower speeds? I grew up with the family deep-Vee and am surprised at how quickly I've adjusted to slower cruising. If you just can't make the leap and the CD25 fits your budget, have you considered the Orca 22? It's about the same price as the CD25. It doesn't have an enclosed head but the cuddy has plenty of headroom so a bathroom break doesn't require yoga training.

Ya know, the more I shop the less sure I get.

I guess I am just going to have to trial the 25. I've had smaller length boats and I know that I don't want smaller.

Regarding speed, I think if the C25 will cruise comfortably at 20 or so in 1-2's, and 25 or so on glass I can live with that.
 
You should think more like 16 - 18 in the 1s, 14 - 16 in the 2s and 20 - 25 on glass.

Give Three rivers Marine a call. (crystal river) Awhile back they had a new CD27 with a Honda 200 on a bracket. Not sure on the price but roomy and fairly fast.

In an earlier post, I wrote about a picture I saw on a Dory site, where the engine was on a bracket, closed transom. I wrote 3 Rivers and they said there was only about 9 of those boats made. 8 were sold to a fishing charter in Hawaii. 3 rivers had 1 which they had kept as a demo. It sold a few months ago. :cry:

Hi Larry,
That's a C-Dory. The original owners of C-Dory produced about a dozen or so in the 90's for Fish resorts in AK. The new owner of C-Dory made one and we got it. It has been sold. This model is no longer produced. Mike

Is this a picture of a dory or cruiser. My issue with the dory was the open transom. The attached photo has a closed transom and engine bracket. Whatever this is a picture of, I am interested. Please let me know.
