22' owners...what is your typical MPG?

If you could please specify the type of engine you have, and the fuel economy.

This way in the future it helps me make a decision when I'm ready to purchase.

Thanks.

Many variables. Load on the boat. Speed. Weather. There is, or used to be, a table on the Factory site showing speed vs MPG, or NMPG. I think typically you'd get 2.5-5, depending on the variables. That's what we used to get on our 22.

Do a search on mpg at the top of the page and you can read about it.

In the short time we have owned Osprey, we have found the MPG to be very close to what is shown on the factory site for a twin 40 Honda configuration. Very acceptable to me.

When the time comes for new engines, we will look hard at a twin 50 E-tec alternative. E-tec's might be the most fuel stingy of any engine option.

There must be some brats out there running them, maybe they will weigh in.

Regards,
Capt Dan

I've only had our boat out a few times, but I did record the fuel meter readings last week while out doing some sea testing of my installs. We have 2009 twin Honda 50 EFI's:

MPH = 5.9 MPG = 4.89

MPH = 6.9 MPG = 4.96

MPH = 9.9 MPG = 3.67

MPH = 18.4 MPG = 3.29

MPH = 30.0 MPG = 3.25

Like other's have said, conditions make a big difference but this was just my initial testing. I'll refine it more when we going on our 2 week boat trip in a week from now!!

I have twin honda 40's and get an average of roughly 3-3.5MPG under typical usage (which for me is running fast to a fishing location, trolling for a few hours and running fast back in). Typical speeds for my runs from spot-to-spot at 14-22kts depending on conditions, usually 10-20 mile runs. I troll at 2-3 kts. For estimating range, I use 3MPG and feel that provides a safe margin of error. Using that estimate, and the rule of 1/3 fuel going out, 1/3 fuel coming back and 1/3 in reserve, I can go out about 40 miles with full tanks (40 gallons capacity on my boat, 50 on new models).

I have 2008 Suzuki 115. I just returned from 28 days of cruising a distance of 1730 miles. At hual speed I get 7.15 MPG. Once I get on plane the MPG really doesn't change that much from 2300rpm to 4100 RPM. Only the speed changes from a low of about 10mph to a high of 25mph. For the entire trip, the average mpg was 4 MPG. The wind ans seas make the difference. I got to where for a given rpm I could look at my sprrd per GPS and pretty much guess the fuel burn.

07 CD 22 with carbonated 06 Honda 90 factory aluminum prop.

Generally log 120 to 180 miles per trip/weekend

Good weather 3.75mpg overall, cruise 5200 rpm 23 to 24mph
Snotty weather 3.33mpg overall, cruise 4200 rpm 16 to 20mph depending on sea state and trim

I’m usually loaded to the gills with 3 people and gear to include 15gl extra fuel, 4 shrimp pots, 10-20 gal water, and all the other stuff.

89 JOHNSON 70

2.25 OVERALL / 2.50 @ Cruise

Very consistent over 20 years and confirmed with fuel-flow computer.

Boat always HEAVILY loaded,

Honda 90 EFI 12-14 mph 4 mpg keeping RPM under 4100. Over 4100 mpg drops to 3 mpg or less until reaching WOT where it recovers to 3.2 mpg.

Prop: Quicksilver 3 blade 14 pitch SS.

Boat loading: fuel fuel, half water, two people and gear with inflatable on roof. Sea conditions flat to 2 feet.

Fuel flow almost doubles between 4000 and 4200 rpm.

Hi Roger, I just found your Super Loop on the Grand Adventure forum today. Are you on vacation from your vacation on the Loop? Looks like your last SPOT location was on a golf course, what did you shoot?

22 Angler
Twin 45 Hondas
250 miles on the TN River, avg speed 20-25mph, 5.7mpg.
650 miles on the TN River, avg speed 15-20mph, 6.3mpg.
Avg smiles per mile was off the charts!

Yes, My brother was down from Louisville. We went offshore fishing on Monday and then yesterday we took my Dad to the golf course. We had a great time both days. I don't know when I'll we able to to do another section of the Loop. I want to get from here to Apalachicola in the next few weeks. Then to the keys this fall.

2002 twin Honda 40's with 4 blade Solas props 11" pitch and 12" pitch - 4.5 mpg with 12" and 4.0 mpg with 11" - both average over one or more seasons with about 80 hrs/season (+/- 900 statue miles) mostly cruising or taxiing at 14 to 18 mph with medium to heavy loads with trim tabs and 1/2 dolphins (outside half interferes with trim tabs) tweaked for maximum speed.

On my previous 1983 Classic with a 90 hp carb. Honda..

32 miles total out and back at 4000 rpm plus 10 miles trolling at 650 rpm = 6.5 to 7 gals of fuel.

Boat lightly loaded, 1-3' seas. I made this run many times with similar results.

My new CD.......I have no clue yet. I need a fuel scan meter to work it out.

Yeah, I saw the out and back into the gulf, figured it was a fishing trip. Where in Louisville does your brother live? I'm in Louisville as well. Looking forward to following the rest of your journey.
ps. Love that photo of your crawfish boil, right on the kitchen table, now that's living!
