As I said in my previous post, which probably crossed with yours, it probably is not so much the Honda 40 per se as the carb vs. EFI decision.

But no one has yet told me how slow I can go with one 50!

Well, I found an Optimax 90 new, still in the crate for 5k and didn't pass it up.
I have used optimax's in the past and have been well pleased with them. They have lots of power and are fuel sippers.
Looks like Bixby's Cub will have Black in the back.

We will be taking the houseboat down the Ohio in May but hope to have the C-dory re assembled in time for Lake Powell in Sept.

I fished with Roger and he trolls on his Honda 40's one at a time and they seem to do fine going slow. I'm not sure about the Honda 50's but I would think you would experience the same thing. Are there any other Honda 50 owners out there who troll?
 
I just love my Suzuki 40's. I pulled the boat out of hybernation yesterday and after sitting for 7 months fired right up and ran smooth, even with the old gas. Of course they are EFI. Sure beats my old Merc 2 stroke, however I will admit when that engine was warmed up it ran superbly.

I have twin 50s and have no problem trolling at about 1.5 miles per hour. I also have trim tabs in the all down position that slows me down a little more. I have over 750 hours on these motors with only one carb clog. That speed is on lakes. On heavy current waters I use a sea anchor .

Thanks for that info -- also to Peter for the report on Roger's boat. Sounds like twins are a viable option for fishing.

I have wondered about using a sea anchor or drift sock. I think they are primarily used for slowing down your drift when you are jigging, etc. I would think there would be a concern about getting your line tangled in the drogue's lines if you were trolling. How do you deal with that?

Ted & Sharon - If all your boating will be at sea level, the 90HP will be just fine. If you plan to boat at high elevations, I will recommend from experience the 115 engine. EFI is the way to go. As you already indicated, dealer support is important. IMO you really can't buy a marginal motor today. Good luck.
