22 Cruiser Repower

We purchased a 2003 CD 22 cruiser with a 2003 50 hp Honda in Dec 2006. The price was right and the choice then was "No Dory or Slow Dory". The boat will cruise at 10-12 K and top out at around 14-15 K. We take day trips on the Chesapeake Bay and are considering repowering with a 90 to extend our cruising range. The boat is in a boatel and there is no trailer.

There is an E-Tec dealer in the marina and a Honda & Suziki dealer about five miles by water. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated as this would be a substantail investment.

If we were to repower our boat (we have a 2001 Yami 80) I'd be looking real hard at the Suzukis. I'm pretty impressed with how quiet they are.

We have been very happy with Evinrude and Suzuki.

The new Suzuki 90 is very light weight and a fuel miser- the only downside is the alternator output is a bit low.

One thought-

If you go Honda it may be less expensive because you may not have to rerig the whole boat. Your esiting control box, tach and peripherals may be the same.
 
Honda 90s are a great engine with the fuel injection and now lighter then the carb version. also honda has great finacing at a very low rate. 5.5% or some where in that area if you need it. We did the whole boat at 4.5% three years ago but that program is no longer around.
 
Add my vote for the Honda 90 EFI. I've had Mercs and Yamahas that could get irritable and decide not to start, but the Honda is just so darn reliable. And, dare I say that it looks like it belongs on the boat? (I'm partial to that nice silver look). I think there's a reason they command a bit more in price, even used.

Whatever you choose, you'll not regret having the extra power... it's wonderful to have a wide range of speeds. Fast or slow, the 90 handles it well. Have fun shopping! :gift
 
I have the Honda 90 on my 2003 CD-22 and it has been perfect for 550 hours now. I cruise at 18 and top at about 25 and burn little fuel. I have no experience with any other motor but I can say the Honda is a very good choice. See you on the bay. (I am out of the South river)

But I find the Black Suzuki to compliment my boat quite well. Now when I repowered, I was looking for a good used 4 stroke with low hours. I found a 115 2002 model with 50 hrs. We went over it with a finetooth comb and replaced anything that needed replacing. I performs like a champ and if I were to do it again...I would think twice. Now a 90 will do the job just fine, but it you want that extra little top end to get back to the dock ahead of a thunder boomer then go ahead an pop for the 115 Black Suzuki.

I stand at the front of the line in my high opinion of all Honda products....if you can afford the upkeep.
 
We bought a 99 c-22 cruiser witha 50 hp honda It did about the same speeds .We repowered with a 06 90hp Suzuki It was a Great motor Quiet fuel effiecient and good price ,Also the old Suzuki's were actually 100hp or more ,My top speed was about 35-36 mph .Mike on Pappion with his 115 suzuki gets about 37mph with his top up and with a perma trim by BOB'S Speed shop in Tampa . With his top down and trimmed out right I really think he could hit 38-40mph

Does the E-Tec still have the 300 hour maintenance schedule?
If so, how has it fared? It seems to me, if the 300 hour is beleivable and all other things being equal, that having to perform maintenance maybe once a season, is reason enough to choose E-Tec engine.

In my limited experience, the only downside to a Honda was having to service it every 100 hours and finding a dealer( at least on the East coast) to do it.

Has anyone repowered with the new Suzuki 90 or rigged a new boat with one? I'm happy with my current Suzuki 90 but if I had to repower the lighter 90 would certainly be in the running.

Jim, Here is a repower idea that has not been mentioned yet......but first... you did not mention how many hours on the Honda 50, or if you are set on a single and if you have a kicker. (sorry I just thought I should have looked for pictures on that one), but there are other options, and some might say good ones.

Consider this, you already have half of a set of twin 50's. So, if you want a new engine, go with a new Hondas 50 and cut you new engine price by considerable. Also, might be able to find a closer match to hours etc, on a used 50. The twins will give you plenty of power & the speed you are looking for. They will also provide redundancy in the event of a bad thing happening, (engine failure, prop strike, etc.) Yes, there is an increased maintenance cost, but for my mind, running in tidal salt water, where at times the next thing west is Japan, I like the comfort of twins. If one quits, the backup is already running, (except in special circumstances) and the also look cool :wink

Obviously there will be some re-rigging issues, but there will with the change to a larger, heavier single as well. One would have to weigh the additional costs of switching to dual control, but that would only be a one time cost, and the maintainence would be ongoing, So it depends on personal abilities and preferences.

You thoughs are on the money....much to fast for normal cruising..but as you pointed out..."Noting says you have to go that fast....and 99% of the time...I don't. But when the boat is loaded down for cruising...say another 1000lbs of things she couldn't live without....that is when the 115 power is handy to have...getting out of the hole and coming to my favorite cruise speed of 18mph....and she barley slurps gas.
 
Marvin , we have powered a number of boats with the new Suzuki 90 . As far as C Dorys go, only 19s . Its fast and lighter for sure.We have not done a 22 yet , but Im sure it would be fine . The new Honda 90s will produce some pretty good speeds . I haven't run em head to head . We get 35 or 36 MPH with a 115 Suzuki on a 22 Cruiser .

Jim - Just an opinion, but I believe it is very difficult to buy a four stroke today, domestic or foreign, that isn't an excellent choice. I'm probably more motivated today (besides initial cost) with the availability of service should problems arise. John

I have decided on the 90 E-Tec for the following reasons.
Evinrude has as a 2010 incentive 'till April. Five year Warranty & part of the rerigging expenses. The engine does not requies a lot of maintenace for three years. And winterizing should be simpler and less costly. The dealer has a good reputation and is located where the boat is kept and when requested the boatel fork lift will take the boat to his shop. (Not having a trailer, I would have to pay for haulouts at least once a year for maintenance and also for any warranty work for another make engine.) And the dealer will sell the 50 hp motor for me. Based on the information from C-Brats, Bennet M-120 Trim tabs will be installed.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the E-Tec. We have sold quite a few of the 90's, and they have been solid performers.

Be sure to have a Fuel Water Sperator Filter installed if you don't have one, and we strongly encourage that StaBil Marine Formula (the Blue Stuff!) be used year round. They recomend 1 ounce in 10 gallons for normal use and 1 ounce in five gallons for storage.
