200th Anniversary of NOAA

NOAA is celebrating its 200th anniversary, of course including its predecessors, such as the US Coast and Geodetic Survey. I just watched a neat internet movie: NOAA 200th Anniversary showing our coastal mapping history since the founding by Thomas Jefferson.

Really good, lot of early pics and recreations. Early charts.

There is a station in San Francisco Bay that has measured the rise and fall of tides continuously ever since June 30, 1854, making it the nation’s oldest continually operating tidal observation station. This location also has the longest continuous tide record in the Western Hemisphere. The gauge even survived the earthquake of 1906.

No - you are correct, the web site linked to in the first post hasn't been updated since 2007. Like many birthday wishes, better late than never. :wink:

However, the NOAA’s National Oceanographic Data Center turned 50 years old on November 1, it's probably not too late to send them a card.
