Susan and I jut got back to the channel lodge. We drove all the back roads between here and Bellingham today. Rain on and off everywhere but no wind as of yet. Well maybe we should have brought the boat and then fished a little. Either way we had a fun day wandering around the country side. Now a walk around town then dinner. I hope a brat Win's the derby. Anyone hear from peter yet??

We decided to come in tonight. Ran into Peter and Caryn at the derby tent after fishing. We fished entirely different areas with the same result. 0
Giving it ago in the morning. Largest fish at the tent was 17
Just got back from the Anacortes Derby. It looks like the weather gods spared us this time. The gale watch in effect for Saturday turned out to be nothing at all. When we went out on Saturday morning, the seas were calm, the weather was gray and cold but great conditions for fishing. It's too bad we didn't catch anything. :cry
We were so relieved that the weather turned out so well. It was great starting the motor and getting out on the water again. I was getting real antsy and it was a great way to start our 5th season on C-Dancer. As usual, the Suzi started right up and the boat handled great. Plus, and I know you don't want to hear this Pat and Patty, but our Wallas ran like a champ, for nearly 48 hours straight. We had it going off the water, on the water, overnight etc. with no problems at all. I guess we're just lucky (so far, right Pat?)
We saw at least 4 C-Dory's on the water. I think we saw the crew from Jimmie Lee, sorry we didn't get a chance to talk to you. We also saw the Viking Lady, a tan 22 cruiser. A gray 22 cruiser and Jim and his buddy on Work Release. I know Work Release caught at least one fish because we saw him checking the fish in at the check point this morning. Finally, we ran into Dwight (Chromer) at the tent. He was on his buddy's boat.
The weather was beautifuly today. Very sunny on the water, probably 10 knot winds, very manageable. And it was great to be back at Twin Bridges again. All in all, it was a great boating weekend. :thup

Ok I admit not winning, but I didn't come in last. Last place would have been staying home and not even going up there because of the gale warning. I can understand why there were two calls to cancel the derby, especially after what all happened two years ago. But around here, over the period of 48 hours, weather can can shows all sorts of faces. I wanted to keep people thinking about maybe there could be better weather, and not cancel their plans. Ironically, Sunday was windier than Saturday!
The big Frasier River fish didn't show this year, and the overall winner was 18.6lbs.
I believe Work Release won among the C-Dory crowd that showed up, because he was carrying that fish around.
Good to see ya Starcraft Tom. Let's fish PNP again this July.

Dwight, I certainly do know what you mean about the weather not always being what is predicted around here, but on this one I fell into the trap of thinking the weather man was correct.....(it seems lately that he's predicted correctly nothing but lousy weather around here)....additionally I was remembering the story that Peter relayed about the "last big blow" during the Anacortes derby. Glad that the weather co-operated on the good side for all of you. :thup .
Well we fished both Saturday and Sunday and despite our best efforts we got blanked. Given the poor weather predictions the weather turned out surprisingly good. Rained pretty much all day Saturday, and today was a little breezy but not bad. We had a great time.
Peter - I am pretty sure we saw you on Saturday near Eagle Bluff. Was hoping to run into you at the tent. Hopefully next time.
Also met Startcrafttom and the misses on Sunday at the tent.
All in all we had a great time. Already looking forward to it next year.

Rule #1 about weather forecasting in PNW (and many other places). When you have checked all the "Weasels", look outside.
What was it like on Cap Sante on Saturday night?. On the South end of Whidbey I was woken up by fairly strong NW wind and a significant hailstorm about 0230. (Plus one deaf German Shepherd saying Dad I wanna go out!)
Great for all of you that it didn't happen as predicted. Sorry about the fish but thanks for leaving some for me.

You're right about looking outside. The "gale force conditions" predicted actually came in the same form you received, a hail storm and strong winds in the middle of the night. By morning, the skies cleared, the air smelled fresh and the winds had subsided to a very manageable 10-15 knots, give or take. I'm glad we threw caution into the wind (hmmm, I just realized where that saying came from) and decided to go. We had a very nice weekend.
As for the fish, there's always next year.
