2009 Anacortes Derby

I will be fishing on the "Bite Me III", a 24' Trophy. Look for Mike and I around the marina on Friday. We are staying at his brothers house on Friday, and are probably going to swing on the hook Saturday up north, if we dont win the derby on Saturday :lol:
 
Hi Peter - we will be out as well for the Anacortes Salmon Derby. Will try to track you down at some point to say hello.

Something wrong here. It can't be next weekend they are only forecasting 25Kts, no snow no gales... :? What has happened to tradition?

Oh so true, not gale force but 25 knot winds are still no fun. We'll see... I'm hoping for calmer seas.

Well, I hope you have better luck than I did in the Homer, AK King Derby. All I caught was cold........and that was just in getting the boat READY to go. The boat never made it out of the garage.....Bummer! It must be nice to have somewhat decent weather already. Good for you guys :)
 
Changed out the heater fuel today... wonder if 2 fresh gallons will be enough for three days given the weather forecast? Hope to see you guys over the weekend! Travel safe everyone and Great Fishing!

ps - had the trailer serviced last week - despite my sense that everything was ok - good thing, had a broken brake shoe just waiting to cause a lot of problems, likely about downtown Seattle I imagine ...... :oops:

I just check the wind reports and models on BIS
and it does not look good on Saturday. 35knots with gust. So I expect most of the fishing to be done close to Anacortes in Guemes channel or on the back side of Guemes. Also is the north end of8-2 open to fishing for this event? This water would be better protected and you can run back Thur the channel at La Connor to the weight in. Susan and I are staying in La Connor all weekend at the Channel inn for our Anniversary. We were going to take the boat but have decided to just drive instead.
 
Good site Tom. I've been monitoring all the sites and it just doesn't look good. There's a Gale Watch in effect for Saturday and the scenario sounds exactly the same as two years ago. If that's the case, it's a no go for us. Other sites are predicting up to 25 knots during the fishing time on Saturday. Doable but probably miserable with the rain, winds and waves.

Still undecided, we'll wait and see.
 
Plan B - the "negative split".

It's something a serious runner understands. Lay back, rest Saturday, then conditions willing - win it all on Sunday!!!!

We are leaving in a few hours. We will be hanging around the tent on Saturday, bracing it against the wind.

I don't know why they don't just cancel and reschedule for next weekend. With wind this bad and a 10 ft tide swing on top of that I think its unethical to dangle large amount of cash prizes in front of people who have already spent money on the tickets when the weather turns this bad. Two years ago several people got into trouble and Sea-tow (or the other out fit) refused to go out. It was luck that no one got killed. Yes everyone is responsible for their own choices but why encourage them. The organizer's should call it on weather.
 
Prior to noon today I was driving South on I-5 between Burllington and Marysville and saw 4 boats heading North on I-5. Since they were all set up as serious fishing boats, I'm guessing they were heading to Anacortes to get ready for the derby.

Even though I'm not a fisherman, I'm with Tom on his thoughts about postponing an event such as this for the safety of the not-so-wise participant that will attempt anything at any cost. Obviously, if the need to rescue less prudent individuals arises, any "would be" rescuers would additionally be placed in a perilous situation.

If the weather does develop as predicted, perhaps the organizer already has a plan in effect to postpone the event.

I am looking across Guemes Channel to the south and Cap Sante Marina. There has been minimal winds so far today, very light breezes at best. A light drizzle just started about an hour ago. Barometer has been fairly steady and dropping just slightly over the past several hours.
There was a parade of boats heading out starting at 0600 with running lights and then more just after sunrise. Looked like a mass evacuation.
 
From what I can see from scanning the "Weather weasels" web sites the cold front and higher winds are coming about 8-12 hours later than the initial prediction. So with luck they will get today's fishing in calm (but wet) conditions but hang onto your hat later tonight and tomorrow.
