2009 $60 for a basic CA fishing license

Only a basic license, Bay/Delta stamp and 2 rod stamp (none of the fancy stuff). Ouch.

I'm wondering how this compares with other states?

I used to get one for my wife and kids too, though they only seem to go maybe a couple times a year. I think I'm going to have to manage this better and just stop for a few 1 day, as needed, licenses for her and the college kids this year.

WOW That's high. I think Florida is around $17 mine is free because I am disabled and anyone 65 gets a free license. I think I paid $30 for a non resident annual fishing license in North Carolina. With that said in 61 years I have never been checked for a license.
 
A combination license (e.g. a license for fresh water and salt that will allow you to retain shellfish, salmon, sturgeon and steelhead + plus most other species), will run you $42.16 + $2 vendor fee in WA. This is for a resident aged 16-69, older or younger residents pay $8.21 + $2 vendor fee. $60 doesn't seem that out of line to me, but I love fishing and would pay whatever for a license. Overall, the license fee is probably less than 5% of what I spend on fishing per year maybe even less than 2% (I don't really WANT to do careful accounting on how much I spend on fishing - at least I don't want the wife to know :wink: ).
 
In Florida , the license is not too bad , its the attorney you have to bring fishing with you to interpret the ever changing fed and state rules that gets expensive ....................

Our license costs $17 per year and $2 more for a Snook stamp. If you fish from a pier you do not need one, only when fishing from a private boat. Remember...take a kid fishing!!!
 
WOW--- that is high--- sure glad I bought the Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License.
I get all of the fishing punch cards, stamps and license mailed to the house around the first of Dec every year.
Same with the hunting license--- except for the tags--- I still buy tags as needed, but the license is mailed to the house in June.

I can relate to that. The WA reg book for 2009 was 142 total pages (including cover)! The regs here are quite complicated and many streams and rivers have individualized catch areas. Unless you're pretty familiar with the local geography, it can be very difficult to determine which areas can be fished in at any given time. I've gotten used to it over the years but I still think the regulations could be simplified considerably.

-quite an increase!

-especially since there are so few fish left in California, compared to not too many years ago!

-don't worry if you live somewhere else, this same scenario will spread to you as the wildlife destruction and over harvest continues.

-Hope the California Department of Fish and Game can use the $ to protect what's left, intelligently.

-catch and release as much as possible, please!

Marty, the combination license will cover all of the above and only costs $8.21 + plus 2$ to the vendor = $10.21. So if you bought the "pieces" of the license individually and paid $22.76, you paid more than twice what was needed.

Don't forget the biologist and lab technician to do the DNA testing to decide just what it is that you did catch.

60 dollars is a good amount of money to maybe catch a few fish. But, with that said, I would probably pay it.

Jeez thanks Roger. Luckily I didn't purchase it yet, just got curious and looked the charges up. Thanks for saving me 10 bucks!

T.R. What's it cost up there where there are fish to be caught..... and safely consumed.

Marvin, In Ca I've heard that the statutory fine for not displaying your license (or forgetting it) is considerably higher than for not having one at all. Those who are smart just fib to the wardens and tell them they didn't bother to get one. I guess Poachers are are more highly esteemed citizens in CA than those darned forgetful. Go figure.

Chris, you (not I, though) CAN eat seaweed! Hope you catch and release too, it is probably an endangered species! :lol:

The oregonians must be too busy fishing to respond but it is around $50 for general license with a salmon/shellfish/sturgeon punchcard. I think halibut also fits in there. Not unreasonable but our stocks are down, just like everyone else's.
 
I found an old (1978) CA Lic. in an old pack rat drawer. $4 bucks. That included privileges much more than todays $60.35, I believe, not to mention there was a salmon season, etc.

If I would have been wise, like C-Hawk, I might have invested in CA fishing license futures, rather than the derned stock market. I compute a compound average cost increase over 31 years of 9.1%. :sad

I don't like to make too much light of this since there are, I'm certain, a lot of less fortunate and unemployed for whom this is probably not even
a decision on the horizon any more. I just hate to see legal fishing becoming just another rich man's sport. It should be a family sport for all.
