2008 Anacortes Salmon Derby

I'm a member of the sponsoring PSA chapter, so I am definitely in. Tom Elliott is going with me -- so how can we lose?

Warren

ticket #474 and 475.

I'll be up there fishing the area for the first time ever.

I can't wait.

I'm on a fact finding mission to find out as much as I can. I know one of the PSA members is doing a presentation, but I'll be missing that.

For those that may be as uninformed about the area as I am, the sponsoring PSA group has a forum that has some good info. It was posted last year, but it still seems to be relevant.

I did not go last year but several of my friends did( yes I have some) many boats had to stay in the islands saturday night that were not planing on it. Just could not cross the strait back to the marina. Sunday was so bad that few went out and some folks ended up getting blown down wind to bellingham and had to hitch rides back to there trailers. not a fun derby last year. I know that the coast guard was called out of several rescues that day. But get this, one guy called seatow because he lost a engine in all that. The local seatow( or what ever the name is, not sure if its sea tow or the other company) refused to go out in that wind so the coast guard had to go get hm. Well sea tow still had to pay the local guy for the call even thou he could not go out and the caller got billed for some of it.

Light wind is a must for us this year. I'm not willing to go through what we went through last year, which was near gale force conditions. :wink

We'll be there on Friday. Hope to see some C-Brats out there.

Caryn and I had a great time at the Anacortes Salmon Derby this year. It probably helps that we each caught a salmon this year, small 5 pounders but who's counting! :wink

It was great meeting Dwight (Chromer) and his buddy Mike from Checkpoint II, seeing Jim and his buddy from Work Release and Tom and Warren on the Lori Ann.

The weather wasn't as bad as last year and actually improved as the weekend wore-on. Friday was snowing and cold, Saturday had rain showers and was cold with probably 10-15 knot winds, not too bad except a little lumpy on Rosario Strait., Sunday had sun breaks and not as cold, plus calm winds, a very nice day on the water.

We're already looking forward to next year's event, now that we know where the "big ones" can be caught. For any of you C-Brat fisherpersons out there, you really should plan on attending next year. This derby has already become one of the best out there and is well run. It doesn't hurt that the Grand Prize was $10,000 either.

Caryn & Peter
C-Dancer

PS Forgot to add, love the Wallas. It made fishing in the cold very comfortable and sleeping onboard very nice indeed. We had Mr. Wallas going practically all weekend with no problems. (Knock on wood)
