2004 Honda BF8A Value

When I bought my "new" 16 it came with both a 2004 BF50 and 2004 BF8A. I don't fish and don't plan on learning so I am thinking about selling the kicker to someone that will use it. It runs and looks great. Has a SS connecting rod and fittings to connect it to the main.
Can anyone help me with what it is worth? I have looked on the internet and haven't found anything that is helpful other than a new one is in the neighborhood of $1800.

David,
In this economy, I believe it would sell for around $75.00. However, since it is "the season of giving", I would be willing to give you $150.00 (2x market price!). I can be there first thing in the morning. Would a temporary check from the Bank of California be okay? Seriously, I think Sportcraft Marina has a similar unit, low hours for $975.00.

David,

Just consider it a late addition to the sale of the original Alyssa Jean to me.
I'd consider upping Ramos' bid by, say $50? That would make it $200 to the new owner of your old boat. :thup

Take a look at www.nadaguides.com. Follow the drop down menus under boats, they list outboard values. Or cut and paste this link:http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-24-38-5692-0-0-0&l=1&w=24&p=38&f=5694&gc=MR&gtc=OB&m=0010&y=2004&ml=H It will take you to the 2004 Honda values

It is just an opportunity for me to speak to the notion of using NADA guides in general. I have been buying and selling boats and outboards for over 40 years and I have never seen any boat or motor sell for what the NADA price was when you are dealing with a real boater or anyone that knows beans about boats. NADA lives in a fantasy world. The only place to get a true value of a boat and/or outboard motor is in the marketplace.

Comparing the item to a new one's price and then deducting a percentage for the age and condition is your first step in determining value.

The second is the availability of the boat or motor in the used marketplace. The more there are the more competitive the pricing will be. When they are scarce, you can expect that a markup percentage will be added.

The third and finial step is how much of a hurry you want some cash in your hands and how bad you need that cash. It's called being a motivated seller.

In the event your price comes in lower then NADA then you can use the NADA pricing to show the buyer how you are staying below the suggested resell price and giving him such a good deal.

Just one man's opinion...so take it for what it is worth....but don't bother checking NADA for the value of "Opinions"...they will low ball them too.

mount it to a water barrel in the back of a pick up truck and park near a boat show where folks are going in to look at new ones.

Or, mount blender blades on it, buy some Margaritaville Tequila and Mararita Mix..... and make 5 gallon batches. By the end of the party, the motor will be sold. If you wish to bring it to the Cumberland River, in a cove near Cedar Creek, about MM233 area, LDB.... then myself, GYPSY, C-Pearl...and some others will help.

Just a couple more ideas David.

Unless you need the money, keep it on the boat for backup. You can also cruise at hull speed with it using much less gas than the main.

Warren

Geez Warren, Hull speed?? Let's see. Square root of the waterline of about 14 X 1.34. About 5 knots. Let's just say 6. A trawler has more speed at hull speed. No, I think one engine, hull speed upto 35 kts. Works for me.

David,
I agree with Byrdman! I will gladly take the motor for $1000.00 imediatley following the 5 gallon margarita :cocktail I really am lookin' for a kiker for GYPSY before we begin the Loop in January 8)
Mike

So there you go David... unbolt the lower unit from the power head, drop it in a cooler,...add a few of your brew (train) for packing/ballance, fly to Nashville on South West, enjoy a weekend, we will provide the Margarita goods, sell your motor to Brother Mike.... get your $1,000.... and head back home.

Ok, you can fly two suitcases free on Southwest....so, to keep the weights below 50#, you may need two coolers for luggage.

You would be surprised at what all SENSIE and I have flown cross country in our "luggage".

Just a thought.

David: The NADA average retail value was listed as 1,185$. That was for an BF8 with an electric starter. Falls in line with most of the opinions other Brats have shared.

best place to sell and check the market price is Craigslist. Ebay has to much marked up new stuff, work from home, get rich with ebay crap to be of any use these days. craiglist is great as a research tool for pricing used stuff.

Aside from the NADA points made earlier, I think that's either a misprint or a different kicker.

To my knowledge, the BF8A is not available with electric start.

Bill:

Take a look at the specs for this model number
2004 HONDA BF8D4LHSA, it is an electric start
Honda makes 3 BF8 models in with electric start for 09.
Thought you might not be aware of that either
