I'm looking at a 1981 c-dory that is for sale.I've allways heard that new materials/techniques were used post 1987...Should a person stay away from these older c-dorys even if they look good?

It all depends in what you are looking for.
the pre 87 is a totaly flat bottom. there are several strakes built into it. it does ride a bit harder in chop or waves. there is not any cushion effect with a rounded bottom.
.
another item is that it will be the Angler style with a longer rear deck and smaller cabin. it is great for fishing and using for shrimp pots or crab pots..lots of flat space back there.the bottom will be sandwiched plywood between glass on either side.the transom will be balsa corred.

I have a 83 and will never get rid of it. it is my work boat so to speak.

That one is sold and delivered. However, in the spirit of the C-Brats, you can get a test ride next summer in Valdez.

One more thing to think about - when the last owner bought this boat, I looked at it and tried to trade my riverboat for it (that owner already had a riverboat and wasn't interested in trading). But if you want a C-Dory bad enough, one will show up for you as it did for us.

If anyone is interested, Islands Marine on Lopez Island has a 1983 22' C-Dory for sale for $9,900 but they say it needs some transom work. It might be a good fixer for someone. I notice it does have a 90 Honda.

I am not connected with this boat or dealer, just saw it on their website.

We have seen the 83' C dory at Island Marine Center and while the Honda 90 looks pretty good the boat itself is extremely worn. Its probably the roughest looking Cdory we have ever seen. It needs a transom for sure and possibly alot more.
