Dave.... I have had a 16' for several months. Great modifications you have made. I really learned alot viewing your pics. I will add a shelf, move my battery to port under the seat and think about anchor modification. How well does that plate on your engine work for you? I run a 50 Yamaha and am wondering about a plate.
Thanks for the pics.
.
It makes a big difference. It is by far the best modification/addition I have made to the boat. Improved the handling and ride of the boat by more than 100%

Steve-

The addition of a hydrofoil helps the boat get up on plane faster*, plane at a lower speed**, and behave like a longer boat, thus *** giving a smoother ride.

* "kite effect" of water pushing on hydrofoil plate at an angle

**more surface planing area

*** effectively lengthens boat by extending planing area aft

How does that hydro plate work for trim with your Honda 50 hp?
You can pick up a pair of plastic hydrofoils at any boating supply. All you have to do is drill a couple holes on each side of the fin. Even I did it correctly! They work extremely well on the 16 footer and are quite necessary to keep the bow down on the cruiser model, which has a more rearward cabin and is relatively stern heavy.

Thanks you guys.....I will order a hydrofoil plate from Cabela's this morning. Can't waite to try it out. I have thought about the flip down type for trolling but I don't seem to have a trolling speed problem. Have been catching enough fish in Lake Tahoe at 2.5-2.8 mph at 700 rpms. I don't think trolling speed needs to be less so I'll order the solid plate.

Good idea about the seperate thread, then again how many members actually own a 16' C-Dory or a 14'? Anyone have an idea? Well, I'm out of here, I'm on my way to Va. to retrive boat and motorhome.----Rich

On the Brat Map there are 75 listed, however I would guess some owners of the 16 have not entered their zip code in their profile and some do not list the size of their boat, so there could be anywhere from 80 to 100 members with 16 foot boats.

Steve, you might want to look at Permatrims. I've had two of them and love 'em. I think Dave copied the Permatrim design and manufactured his own aluminum hydrofoil. Correct me if I'm wrong Dave.

Peter – you are right about my hydrofoil. It is a copy of the Permatrim Hydrofoil. I did a bit of research and read many post from members before deciding on which to get. It seemed to be a consensus by most members that the Permatrim was best. It looked simple enough in design so I decided to make my own. As I said before, I believe it is the single best add-on/modification I could make to my boat. The thumbnail below will take you to the dimensions of the hydrofoil in my photo album, for a 40 to 50hp Honda engine. The only difference for other 40 to 50 HP engines would be the cut out in the middle.

I would be happy to help anyone interested in making one.

Thanks again...I am on the search for a Permatrim Hydrofoil. I didn't order one yesterday. Gizmo thinks it to be a great add on. We are excited!
Have any of you guys up there in the Pacific Northwest ever covered the intercoastal out of Ketchan northwest towards Sitka?
Thanks

As to fuel tanks, the Sue-C has a 12 gallon tempo with the low profile cap so it fits in the back under the motor well perfectly. There is also room for one more for a total of 24 gallons. I prefer to put the portapotti back there and just add another 6 gallon. But that may change, depending on where I am going. If we go to Chelan, or up the inside passage we will probably go with two 12's.

Thanks for mentioning the low profile cap. Last week I was in Seattle Marine measuring tanks and didn't even think of the cap. you sure saved me a 'return' trip
