10/01 - 10/03 - Sequim Bay Fall Fling

Sounds good, Mac. Two years ago Les Jr. wrote to tell me that if I didn't hit Admiralty Inlet at the right time I would be in for a rough time. Since I'm just little, I got scared. He's right, of course, that area is no place to disrespect. But the tide will be going out till about noon, and if we pass Port Townsend early enough we just might find smooth sailing. We can sneak west of Indian and Marrowstone Islands and go under the bridge. It's a fabulous cruise up there when the winds are mild.

If we do this I'd like to cruise with Pat and Patti, the folks first with this idea. But I'd feel safer with an early start from Everett. What do you other guys think?
 
Yes, if we all say "please" real nicely? But hope we can find some other way out of the swamp than via Steamboat Slough and those low bridges!

I have located John Wayne marina using Mapquest. My question is, where is the park in relation to the marina? :?: North?, south? east? I've got a good hunch it isn't west. :roll: And how far?

The red/green bouys in the chart below are at John Wayne Marina. The state park is south, north of the Schoolhouse Point - the state park ramp is marked on the chart.

The dock is hard to see on the chart, but it's just south of the ramp, near the first group of pilings. According to the GPS software, it's 1.75 statute miles from the John Wayne bouys to the dock.

Nice chart Bill. This last week I've been working on the southern tip of the bay where it says "RU". There's a small creek there called Jimmy Come Lately Creek and it's full of chum salmon. It's pretty amazing to watch these 6 to 15 lb. fish travel upstream in really shallow water. I watched a couple shoot upstream so fast, they would exit the water on the bank, do a couple of "doughnuts", a few "brodies" and somehow manage to find the water again.
 
Jon, how has the wind looked in and outside the bay this week?
The weather in Seattle has been mild and nice the last few days. Hopefully we'll get more of the same next weekend. Likely we will since Sequim receives the same amount of rain as Phoenix.

I'm hoping to be there - not sure yet. If I bring crab (don't ask where I get them) will there be a way to cook them?

And I agree with your double plug idea. I belong to a very exclusive club of those who have backed the boat in with the plug out -- and even backed the boat and trailer in with the rear straps still attached. I thought you were supposed to get smarter with age -- I'm an exception to the rule! Present boat doesn't even have a hole to insert a plug, so one less opportunity to screw it up. But I'll find a way...

Backing the trailer in the water with no plugs in, hummm? I joined that club back in 1990 at Neah Bay with my first C-Dory. Let me tell you that "sucker" fills up in a hurry and man does it get your attention.

Fall Fling here I come! Not sure where I will launch from. If the weather is really good I may run from Steilacoom. (about 80 miles) Being retired has many advantages, one being I am not so weather dependent on either end of the trip. If it looks a bit messy, I may drive to a launch somewhere between Point No Point and Port Townsend. If messy, I will go to John Wayne on Friday morning to launch.

One possibility would be to meet up with any C-folks that will be going around the south end of Whidbey Island on Friday morning.

I'll be keeping one eye on the weather forcast and one eye on postings to see when and where I might meet up with other C-Brats.

Well...I was referring more to an ensemble of sorts, where all the musicians had spent some time at the tap.

Time to put in my two cents worth on the upcoming Sequim Gig.

Our usual Annual Sequim events are: Fri nite, eats and drinks on your own - maybe $5.95 steak dinners at the casino, 2 mi up the road. Saturday nite potluck, no signups - just bring you appetites and what suits you to share. (I'll bring a big pot of BBQ Beans again).

This year with the group camp reservation, we also get the picnic shelter & campfire rings. (CLou crew will bring the firewood & tablecloths). These are great spots for the potluck and evening sing-along, lead by the Brock!

The group camp has several sites for those of you that want to bring along your campers, tents, etc. Also there's parking for the attendees in the group camp area; we should avoid the $5/day parking fee by avoiding the main parking lot! There's also flush toilets at the top of the boat dock, pay showers are in the upper campground area.

If you need overnite motel accomodations in the area, I'll be happy to put in some phone #'s.

I seem to recall a post with no crabbing but some fishing. What are we talking about in the way of fishing? Is the silver run still going into the Dungeness River or is it maybe a tad bit late like ours was? Some of us fish types need to know so we gear up our boats accordingly.

Tim,

The crabbing and clamming is over and silver fishing (marked or unmarked) is open in that same area we fished last time. The fish will be running up the Dungeness all of October but catching them in that small designated area east of the Spit will be hard to do. Personally I think the salmon fishing is terrible in the Sequim area, (unless your fishing the river) but it's always fun to drag a line.

Another option that might be fun is catch and release cutthroat trout on light tackle inside Sequim Bay. Robbi of C-Run might be interested in fishing for "cuts."

That's about it for the local Sequim Bay area fishing for early October.

I thought that I would try to find a cuttie or two. I have never fished Sequim Bay before, but it looks like it might be pretty good. At least I will flog the air with a fly and probably catch a few unintended objects- like the back of my head. :crook I have heard reports lately that the estuary fishing for cutts has been very good the last few days. Maybe they will hold out for a few more days before they head up the creeks. Robbi

Since I woke up before C-Lou, I'll give you my two cents worth before Cynthia does, because she might send you to :rose Colette's :rose or :rose Domaine Madeleine :rose Bed and Breakfast. Bill-Da Nag could tell you about those places.

Personally for this occasion, I would like a place like the Econo Lodge (360 683-7113) located about 3 miles west from the Sequim Bay State Park. Address is 801 Washington St. located on the main drag in Sequim. The little cafe next door called the Mariners is a pretty good place to get Breakfast.

Another place is the Sequim Bay Lodge (360 683-0691) that's located just east of the Sequim Bay State Park on Hwy 101. This is supposed to be a pretty decent place, but Cynthia and I had a real dump of a room (and stinky). when we stayed there on a halibut derby drawing we won. I know in the past some of the other C-Brats have stayed there, so maybe they could share there experience.
