09/30 - 10/02 - Sequim Gathering

Thanks for the info - I have a fly rod I've been using for lake & river trout. I can't imagine catching a couple pound anything on it though...should I be looking for a heavier duty fly rod or do you really use this light weigh stuff? What kind of lure/terminal tackle should I have? I sure have a bunch to learn, but I really look forward to trying.. Coho are just starting (finally!) down here from all reports, but trolling with 20 lb test is just not quite the same...

Robbi - when are you planning to arrive at Sequim?

Mac

Hey Mac, I think your lightweight gear will be fine for the Cuts around here. I only use ultralight gear for cuthroats and for the Olympic back country trout fishing. Maybe Robbi will add to this, she's the pro when it comes to cuthroat fishing.

Mac, That rod sounds perfect for cutts. I talked to the folks at the fly shop in PA this afternoon. (They closed their Discovery Bay store 3 weeks ago. :( ) He brought me up to date on fishing Sequim Bay. I use a 5 weight for cutthroats. Floating or intermediate line. They take most flies, not too picky. Size 4 to 6 hooks. I'll have some flies, leaders, etc if you want to give it a try. If you try for coho, I would use at least a 6 weight, probably an 8 weight. I am going to bring my 8, but don't know if I will try for coho or not.

I will probably arrive fri am. If anyone is coming Thurs, I might head up then.

Jon, Where are these coho headed? Do the chum stage inside the spit in the area that will be open Sat? Inquiring minds want to know :?

Robbi

Robbi,

The Dungeness River dumps into the Dungeness Bay just inside the Spit. There's a hatchery up river and they usually get a pretty good return of coho.
The bad news is that netting is usually open before or during the inside Bay fishery and spooks them pretty good.

All the other coho are making a "left" to the Frazier Valley area or a "right" to the Sound and Hood Canal area.

Now the Chum fishing is closed all together. I'm not sure where they stage, but some run up the Dungeness River and some go into Sequim Bay and run up Jimmy Come Lately Creek.

Hey Gene , Of course the weather is gonna be good for us... it's the C-Brats in C-Lou and now Da Nag Country...it may be a little liquid sunshine, but sunshine for sure. Looking forward to meeting you all....

Hope I can find y'all (borrowed term, southern for all of you) when I get there! If I get confirmation of a room, I'll be boatless cuz Steve's going to Baker to kill Bambi or Bullwinkle (guess that's why I'm not going cuz I wouldn't shoot either one!), but bearing salmon dip and guacamole for the potluck. cu Saturday!

Dock bumming sounds great.

Protocal question, Tom and I are coming for Saturday afternoon & evening only, no boat... should we still sign up or just show up?

For starters, we'll bring heirloom tomatoes, asian cucumbers and grapes off the vine (if I haven't made them all into wine or raisons by then).

Anyone planning to have a camperback on a 22 that we could admire? Probably won't need it for rain in Sequim, but maybe sun protection! We've searched the photo albums for pictures but haven't come up with much that shows features of the various designs.

Wish we could play the whole weekend, but this will be a working trip with a C-Dory intermission.

Rene and Tom,
Show up for sure and your choice on the sign up.

There should be several camper backs up during the evening hours. I'll have mine up for sure and you can check it out.

See you all soon, Jon

Rene and Tom,

And I'll have our camperback on Two Lucky Fish as well. We didn't have one originally, but added it this summer. We absolutely love it for overnight cruises. It doesn't work for fishin though!

Mac

You might already have seen it, but Casey (Naknek) has a slightly used camperback for sale...

This rendezvous will be great big fun. Hey, Jon, what's the likelihood of calm to no wind from the east again this year? We might need to go back to that frisky pub and score more peanuts from oversized, twin containers.

Catman,

Oh my goodness, I almost forgot about that.
My head still isn't the same after that collision.

I think we missed our call last weekend for lake like conditions out on the Strait. Although, the marine forecast is calling for 1 foot or less on Sat. and Sun. That equates to flat calm, fingers crossed!

Hi Sequim folks,
Well, Mary & I are heading to the airport in the early am. Arrive Seatac about 11:30am pst (providing USAirways cooperates). Ferry to Bainbridge and on to Sequim.

See you fine folks...Fri?...Sat?...Sun?. We'll be there Sat fer sure.

Would a couple (few) bottles of vino be appropriate for a gathering? Maybe after the latte but before the beer???

See you in a bit.
Gene

You dang betcha! The Beerguy enjoys vino as well! We will be arriving some time Friday afternoon, on the "real" Daydream!

We will be there Saturday as soon as we can get there.. Who knows we might get there for some breakfast leftovers or some coffee left overs. We will be trailering up instead of cruising up from TOA for fuel and time conservation.

It looks like this will be another year that we will miss this Sequimdandy event.....maybe next year we'll make it........drat
