So who want to go fish Saturday.....? Let's get serious here !! Let the "Hunter Gatherers" speak up

Merv

I'm in if we can make it, likely will be trailering up & dumping in at JW MarinaSat AM

We're working on this grand scheme to get to JW Marina around 9:00pm Friday, launch, and motor over to the park dock in the dark. Leave a light on for us!

This year it will be three grandgirls (Tiffany, Jamie and Kylee), two dogs (Minnie and Sophie), and one tired old grouchy grandpa (me). The kids assure me they will be well behaved, respectful, and have fun. Minnie is old and sweet, so she won't be any problem. Sophie is so cute that it won't matter what she does. Me, on the other hand...

Jon - wasn't offering to trade beer for hitching a ride (not a bad idea, though). Topics were sort of unrelated. (A) we are coming without a boat, and might like to hitch a ride if we get there in time, and (2) Jon - should I bring a keg of beer for the potluck? I ASSUME the answer is yes, but who knows what the State Park rules are...

Pat, I love your beer, and you two are sweethearts, but I don't even know if we're going to bring our boat.
Cynthia is working swing shift all weekend so I got to bring the camper for her to stay. Still trying to figure out if I can bring Pee Wee. I can't tow it behind the camper, so I might have to make two trips.

And boy, do I hope the weather holds. The Strait has been glassed out going on two weeks now.

Jon

Pat, I'm not sure what the Park rules are either. We got away with it last year, so I say YES! We could throw a sombrero over the keg and no one will ever know. 8)

Eric,

Ok. We should be over at the park at that time. Swing by and let's see who is awake.

Now all we need is someone who knows where the fish are !! Looks like even Dusty is being a pessimist !

I drove out to Whiskey Creek last night and talked with one of my buddies that's fishing/camping. This guy(Gary), in my opinion is one of the best fisherman on the Peninsula. He's been catching fish, but sloooow! We are both using downriggers. Gary has been catching most of his fish at 105 ft. deep and some 120 ft. Yep, that's deep for silvers and I have been running 50 to 75 feet. The next time out I'll try deeper. Early in the morning I would try in the top 45 feet of water, even the surface and then down deeper when the sun is up. Last year I was fishing this deep and did pretty good.

We use a flasher, dodger, fish flash and either a green/blue hoochie or a greenish color coho killer with a tiny strip of herring. The water depth has been around 500+ feet. That's out in the shipping lanes close to the Canadian border.
Good Luck, Jon

Well it look as of right now we will not be able to attend agian. I was planning on it and looking forward to it but things have come up. My folks have bought a 44ft atlantic. I will post a pic later. Mom flew in saturday and headed up to the boat, but dad is in northern ca. somewhere working. I have to go up and fix a few things and figure out why others are not working before dad gets off this job and comes up. the boat is in blaine at the marina. we have not seen it yet and want to spend the weekend with my mom. I will not take the susan e with us, but will sleep on the new ( to them) boat. It was built in 77 on the east coast and seems to be really well construted for its age. You all have fun with out us.

OK gang, the forecast appears to be holding on good conditions:

235 PM PDT WED SEP 27 2006

FRI THROUGH MON
W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 OR 2 FT.

ADMIRALTY INLET-

We are planning to pass through Admiralty Inlet at slack tide around 1:30pm on Saturday. Would enjoy floating through with anybody else doing the same.

Jon,

Don't tell Cynthia but the silvers seem to be running deep, deep, deep. Feeding on schools of bait way down thar. My Canadian buds are catching 'em with downriggers down between 235 and 250 ft. Yep thats 235 and 250. They are getting close to the US border and in +/- 100 fathoms of water. Same for kings. Unusual this year, and the kings are not feeding in the kelp as usual. Strange year. Wish I could talk Chinook language and find out what's going on. Some of the Chinook held off Renfrew until they were almost river dark, and then headed directly to their home rivers... hmmmm.

See ya in a couple of days,

Dusty

Dusty,

Looks like I'll have to get more cable on the downrigger spool. Or, take some cable off C-Lou's downrigger so maybe I could out fish her. Doubt it though.

Man, that's amazing, 250 feet. I tried 180 feet last year just messing around, and caught one in the low teens. Might catch some of those white footballs at that depth, Frazier River white kings.

Thanks for the info Dusty.

Jon

The only folks in the sound that are getting coho are fishing 150 t0 200 ft off possesion and ship wreck. You dont have to talk fish dusty, just look at your temp gage. the sound has been over 58 degrees surface temp all summer. they need and will hunt for 52 t0 55 degrees. I think they are just late.

Concur with all the above posts. The only time we have seen any number of fish has been at about 100+ ft in 250 ft at the edge of a rip where presumably some of the colder wate was getting mixed in.
Did break off (My bad) a huge but unkeepable Chinook that bit in 40 ft of water.
Let's hope it's not too foggy.

Merv & Kathy

Will miss you at Sequim, Tom. Have fun on the folk's boat. '77 ain't all that old - back when the built 'em right. Daughter has a '67 Pearson (sailboat guys) 35 ft. cruiser that is absolutely like new.

I'll sip one of those great Snoq. brews for you

Dusty

Jon,
If you and the fish-lady aren't used to downrigger fishing that deep - word of caution. Tom will back me up, I'm sure. NO fancy S-turns - and be very careful in the rips. If you have both rigs down below 200' you can get some wire tangles that will keep you busy for a long time. BTDT many times, and when commercial fishing off LaPush we'd often get a Halibut on each of the bottom spreads - they swim the spreads in together and the next hour or so is dirty word time.

The fish are there, man, I see them on the depth sounder. Go!!

Dusty

Fellow C-Brats: We plan on trailering "Mr.E's C" up to Sequim Bay on Saturday and should be there about noon....We will be staying in a motel on Saturday night. Anything special that we should bring to the Saturday night potluck?? See you there....Wayne and Pam

How cool! I LOVE your boat! Now if we can just get one of the CD27s there, we would be a historic gathering!

I'd given up on our ever making this event. But we had a change in plans that looks like it will allow us to do this one. We're going to get to the boat at Anacortes tomorrow night and then run across sometime on Saturday. We've never gotten beat up crossing Admiralty Inlet, so we're going to head across on Saturday. We'll join the flotilla if there are others heading out Saturday.

Because I didn't think we'd be doing this, I don't even know how to get to the state park. I'll have to look it up on the charts once we get to the boat.

Look forward to seeing you all again.

Glad you are going to make it. When you enter Sequim Bay go south near the west shore. You will see the John Wayne Marina (can't miss it) approximately 1.5 miles south of JWM is the park.
