09/24 - 09/26 - North Carolina, 4th Annual

Hello Everyone, We are here at River Neuse Suites. I am guessing we will be getting a call from Charlie and Sally in a few hours. We can set up a time to meet for supper with whom ever has made the trip today ! :P See ya'll soon ! Tracy :D

So it begins.. So far we have Al & Pam (who live down here) Jim & Sandy, Jim & Loree, Charlie & Sally, Tivo, Bill and of course Larry and myself. We had a nice if expensive dinner( I was shocked at the cost!) at the Steamer with Jim,Sandy,Jim, Loree, Bill . Sadly Charlie,Sally and Tivo were a wee bit later.
No worries, We will make up for lost time tomorrow ! :D We will be around the Marina all day helping folks get into their slips and helping get trucks & trailers to the Marina. Tomorrow night around 6 we plan on having a nice Pot Luck dinner and getting to know all our new friends ! Oh and I will have the Tee Shirts to hand out. :D  Bill has some possible cruise around the area mapped out.
Saturday we plan to take a boat cruise depending on who wants to go where.. . Saturday night/afternoon we will we be eatting around 6 pm. Smithfield will be bringing out BBQ & Chicken with all the fixings ! Oh and I do have a few small prizes to give away.
Sunday we will TRY to have some coffee and pastries before everyone starts leaving.

I've noticed over the years that people tend to bend things out of proportion. I've noticed that it is especially true among the boating community.

You may hear other renditions of this story in time to come, but this is the story from where I sat (in Charlie's truck)...

Pam & I met Charlie and Sally at the public boat launch this evening. Cal was already there helping Charlie, so I just stood back and gave a long round of applause (it seemed like the thing to do at the time).

Once Captain's Cat was afloat and on its way to the marina Sally & I hopped in Charlie's truck. Pam followed us in my truck as the plan was for me to drive Charlie's rig to the marina and ride back home with Pam.

Now some might say I got confused. The truly bold might say I got lost. (I hadn't been to Whittaker Pointe Marina in several years)

I would like to say once & for all that I was NOT lost. I was on Straight Road. The problem was that the marina is on White Farm Road. I'm really not a detail-oriented kind of guy. :)

At one point I pulled over to call Tracy for directions and discovered I had no cell coverage. Aarrgh!!!

Sally & I kept driving (with Pam following close behind) until we saw a fellow standing alongside the road. We stopped and asked him where Whittaker Pointe Marina is and he said he never heard of it.

At that point I decided that perhaps it was time to re-evaluate my strategy. It was at that very same moment that I realized I had no strategy.

I turned Charlie's rig around and headed back from whence we came. Upon acquiring cell coverage I called Tracy, who reminded me the marina is on White Farm Road. Women!

Moments later it was a happy reunion all the way around. Sally jumped out of the truck happy to see Charlie. Charlie came running full speed ahead happy to see his trailer. Hugs & kisses all around, although it was the first time I ever saw a grown man hug a boat trailer...

As always it's nice to meet new friends.

Sorry for burning up your gas Charlie! (nice truck though...) :beer

Hey Al, when I only got 6.3 MPG on the way down, I won't miss a few gallons. The wifi here at the marina doesn't work but I managed to get into a good one across the creek with a little help. I know the WEcode now if anyone needs it.

Nice place, gotta go get some more coffee...

Charlie

Last day here after a great 3 days! Most all the boats went to Beaufort yesterday morning, lunch and general visiting. A great 25+ mile trip across the Neuse River down Austin Creek and the ICW almost to Morehead City. Some actually made it to Morehead city but I don't think it was on purpose.

I think I counted 12 boats and about 5 folks that didn't have their boat but came along for the rides!

I don't have the chips for this area on either of my chartplotters but fortunately the built in charts are just fine. My Droid-X covers it fine too and has a nav function using the GPS.

Weather has been great, 70 or so at night, mid 80s during the day. Pot luck on Friday night very nice and the catered Smithfield BBQ/chicken dinner last night very tasty.

Thanks Tracy and Larry for doing this again, this was our first trip down here and I think we'll probably do it again.

Heading up the coast (on the trailer) for Manteo Isl to splash the CAT at a marina and then out to the Outer Banks for a week with kids and family at a big beach house. Looks like a rainy week though, hope it isn't too bad!

Thanks again Larry and Tracy, their boat looked great, a lot better than when I sold it to them this spring! :teeth

Lots of folks took pictures, if one of the nerds would make an album available, I'm sure it'll be full in no time

Thanks to Tracy and Larry for putting together a great event. :D

It was nice to see some familiar faces from last year when The Captain (Rosemary) was researching getting a C-Dory. This year she was able to answer questions and share "Sea Baby" experiences.

Charlie - next time you talk to Ed Mortimer tell him you ran into a Yeoman who learned about Wednesday Korean "Grounds Inspections" from he and Don Montgomery.

I posted the cover page (Map) of Sea Baby's Cruise Log to and from Beaufort/MHC in the album Tyboo opened for our gathering.

Again, thanks for a great time and holler when in the Oriental area.

Cal - The Deckhand

Charlie? Next year you can take my truck and get lost on the back roads. It's only fair, right?
