09/21 - 09/23 - North Carolina C-Dory Gathering

Tracy? Please let Carrie know I was planning to pay with chickens & goats!

Shucks, I may have to rethink my strategy!

I will be arriving in Oriental late Wednesday afternoon, will probably stop to harass Gene & Carrie on my way through.

Planning to launch C-Gypsy Wednesday evening & put her in the slip behind my condo in preparation for the weekend.

Looking forward to the gala event! ;)

Since we're staying at the Oriental, we've confirmed a slip there. We're planning to "drive" over to the point friday night after we check in...and then "boat" over saturday morning.

Not that I'm the least bit excited about the upcoming gathering :D , but the forecast doesn't look too bad, little rain on friday maybe. Our friday roadtrip will be 387.69 miles, which will put us in Oriental about 8pm. Starboard engine carbs will be rebuilt today, canvas top will be finished on tuesday (the rest of the canvas will be done after the gathering). T-minus 175 hours till departure.

Tracy ~

You misunderstand... The goats are for milking. The chickens are for eggs!

Gene can build a barn behind his dealership and start selling dairy products!

How about sharing some MMSI numbers so we can do a little position exchanging on the VHF's? Ours is 338020314. If we get enough, we can set up a little group to poll.

I get it the whole teach a person to fish thing eh ? LOL Not just eatting for the day.. :D

Can't wait for the Gathering day to get here either !

Ok now.. you have to go outside and play with the GPS and read the book until you find the right page.. I already added Alma's Only and Thelma Lou to mine... If I can do anyone can ! :) Now I can't wait to get more numbers.. LOL :o

...and therein lies my problem. I read my radio manual, figured out how to assign the number to it, but the hookup for my GPS on the radio is an RCA jack. I have no idea how to connect the 2 DSC wires (TX and RX) from the GPS to a single RCA jack on the radio.

Well...I just called tech support for Standard Horizon. Apparently my 1994 radio cannot be connected to my Garmin 172....Like I needed an excuse to buy an ICOM M504!...I suppose I'll keep the SH for scanning other channels.

So, what "chat" channel are we going to use? I seem to recall 68 working pretty well the last time I was in the area. Whatever we use can also be loaded in as the MMSI "go to" channel.

I also have Garmin format routes in and around the New Bern, Oriental, Beaufort, Ocracoke area, as well as approaches from Norfolk (via the Dismal Swamp and Virginia Cut) and from Savannah. If anyone could use these, let me know, and I'll e-mail whatever you desire.

Here's a link to a super website that shows how to use MMSI numbers with DSC radios to make position requests and group calls. We should have lots of time to get anyone hooked up who has the right equipment, but hasn't gotten everything set up yet. If you're interested, just be sure to have gotten your MMSI number per previous posts, and if you aren't hooked up, bring your owners manuals, if available.

Even if your VHF won't talk to your plotter (NO VHF NMEA OUT +), you still might be able to use a lot of the DSC functions, so long as the plotter talks to the VHF (PLOTTER NMEA OUT+), and the VHF is capable of listening (VHF NMEA IN +).

I'll go ahead and program my unit to switch to 68 as the DSC "go to" channel, and change it later if there are other preferences.

I broke down and ordered a new ICOM M504 last night, found it on sale online. It has ALOT more features than my older Horizon, but I think I'll leave the Horizon onboard as a backup since it is mounted in-dash.

You should really like the 504. They seem to be a top of the line unit. You can show us all the new bells and whistles. Be sure to get it all figured out before the gathering!
