09/09 - 09/16 - Erie Canal Cruise

Fred:

I went solo from west to east, so my actual experiences, other than the leg down from Seneca Falls, wouldnt' really apply to someone approaching Seneca Falls from the east. However, my approach might be of some use. Basically, I fudged on the speed limit. Here's how.

Along almost all my path, the speed limit was posted. It was published everywhere, so I knew the limit all along the way. On one occasion I saw a vehicle ahead on the service road, which looked to have some governmental/authoritarian aspect, so I did the posted speed limit. They slowed until I was next to them, and then matched my (legal) speed for about a mile. That was the only occasion where I felt I was being "watched."

However, even if you're not being watched, your speed is limited by the fact that as you clear one lock, the distance to the next is known. So, the next lockmaster usually knows you're coming his way, and the precise time of your earliest arrival. I set up a little chart in my log book, listing all the locks by number, with intervening mileage, and the number of minutes it would take to get from one to the other, traveling at the applicable speed limit. Then, I'd fill in the time I actually exited a lock, add the number of minutes to the next, and had the earliest time I could legally show up at my next lock. I would then do the legal limit, or less, as conditions required, and exceed the limit whenever possible in fairly remote stretches where there was no other traffic, no boats or docks to wake, and the shore was in good shape. In short, when a little speed wouldn't cause harm.

My purpose was to arrive early at the bend in the canal immediately before the next lock, and then kill time as necessary so as to come around the bend, and request entry to the lock, right on (legal) time, to the minute. Arriving a tad early allowed me to take personal breaks, update my log, fix lunch, or even stretch my legs a little, and still travel the route in the least possible time. I don't like to travel this way generally, but it was kind of fun to have my own, mini road rally.

The first day, I traveled 57 miles (Medina – Fairport) in about 7 1/2 hours 0940 - 1705), transiting 2 locks, and, as I recall, several lift bridges. I took on gas after arriving at Fairport just in time for the 1700 closure time for bridges and locks, which had just kicked in.

The second day, I traveled about 62 miles (Fairport – Seneca Lake State Park) in about 11 hours (0611 - 1710), transiting 10 locks, any lift bridges (?), and stopping for a shower south of Seneca Falls. The shower was a real treat, and made the pull out at the Finger Lakes, and the drive home, much more enjoyable

The lock thrus generally went without delay, and I think the most I had to wait to enter was about 5-10 minutes. Time in the lock varied, and although I don't have my log book handy, can be figured at 10-20 minutes, depending on other boats in the lock, and the amount of lift or fall. There was never any material delay at a lift bridge.

If someone wanted to slow it down a bit, they could add on whatever other time they thought they needed.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Hi Erie Canal Pals,

I've been extremely busy and have not checked this site for weeks. Looks like we're still on and Crescent Girl and crew will be at Seneca
Falls on Sept 9th and spend a week getting as far as anyone wants to go. Fast, slow or intermediate, makes no difference to us. We'll just be happy to see you all and hopefully some new pals also.

Fred and Pat, Tom mentioned to me he spent some time with you in Fairport. He updates me from time to time on canal conditions. Very nice guy!

Dun

Fred, Tom said lock 10 is still closed, but they are woking around the clock to get it opened by Labor Day. He'll keep us posted. In my opinion, we can wait until that weekend to see if it opens, and then change venues if necessary. The trip from Albany to Lake Champlain would be an entirely acceptable substitute if necessay. Does everyone agree?

Dun

Dun and Fred,

I really liked Alma's Only little trick. I always tried to guess when to arrive- Dave has it down to a T.

Lock 10 seems to be a problem. The phone numbers for the locks are in the large guide book. It would be good to give them a call closer to the time.

Tom and his mother are a joy to be with. He has vast knowledge of the canal system. I sure wish we could join you for part of the fall trip. Not looking good at this time.

If lock 10 is closed a trip up to Oswego is always nice they have good eats and a nice musuem. This trip down into the town through the locks is really neat-lots of good views.

Hi Dun,

Yup, I like your Plan B. If Lock 10 is broke, I'd like to go from Albany up the Champlain. Maybe we could go up the Flight of Locks and west on the Erie for a little side trip. I've always wanted to do that Flight.

Rick, Fred and Dun:

Plan B sounds great to me. I, too, have longed to do the step locks. The drive up from Richmond would be all major interstates, and there is Amtrak service between Albany/Troy and Montreal, which might let us rest up on the train while chasing down our tow rigs.

david

Hi Folks,

Plan B is all right with me. I still hope Lock 10 will be open. The Amtrak goes right up the left of the canal and Lake Champlain. Means we could get back from where ever we stop. Platsburgh, Whitehall, Etc.

Also if we leave our boats at the state park just above the Flight, we could come down the Flight, up the Champlain Canal, and as for North as we want to. Anybody could stop, or go back at any time, depending on their time frame.

Fred

Hey kids if you are heading East on the Erie Check and make sure lock 10 is open. We set out in a SOB ( some other boat) and got stopped at lock 10. We had a lot of rain and flodding around Amsterdam and it took out the lock. .

Hope you all don't mind my post. I'm looking to by a C-dory. someday.

Well guys, the NYcanal web site just posted a notice that the entire canal is opened as of tomorrow morning Aug 19th. Yeah! The landside lock facilities at lock E-9 thru lock E-15 will not be available for use, but that sould be ok. It looks like they did a great job getting lock E-10 back in operation. I guess we're good to go!

Dun

Woo Hoo! I guess I better get finding some B&B's! Is there any consensus on when we intend to leave Seneca Falls to head east, either Sunday or Monday? Our preferrence is to leave Monday, and play in Seneca Falls and the Lakes on Sunday. But we'd be happy to start heading East on Sunday if others want to get an earlier start.

Rick from Maine

Rick, like your suggestion of puttering around Seneca Falls/lakes area and heading East on Mon.AM. This would allow Wayne McCown(see earlier post) to hook up with us for a day or two to see what a get together is all about. A day cruise down to Watkins Glen or Ithica on Sun. would give the locals something to talk about for the winter months plus give the participatants time to get their stuff organized.
Anyway we do it--I'm ready!!!
Dun---Still got your favorite coffee mug and topo maps/will have onboard awaiting your arrival.
Fred---Thanks for getting all this started again this year.
To All--Have got VHS tape of the film crew/Bill & EL interview/and us entering Pittsford last year----I will bring portable TV/player with me for first Sat.night in SF but do not want it on whole trip so got to work out some details.
Comments???

I'd love a DVD copy. Is it possible?

Sneaks, Not that I am aware--I had my Son tape this off the TV one night when I got called it was showing. Tried to buy a copy last year when it was first aired but could not get to anybody who cared or could help.Film crew was nice---producer and office staff were a bunch of snobby jerks. I tried a couple of times and my sweet talking sister tried once----NO GO---Send a 100$ support donation to the local PBS channel and they would put you on their benifactor list THEN you could have a copy.
Sorry guys and gals - I tried---I'm just very happy my son was home and was able to get what he did.
PS: planning on coming to Seattle in Jan. for the boat show and get together so will bring tape out there also.

Hmmm. If yer willing, Terry, send me a VHS tape copy and I'll "rip" some DVD's if all else fails. There should be several Brats with that capability. I'm sure Captain's Choice Charlie can do it in his sleep. All it takes is a VHS player, a DVD player/recorder and then any old computer with DVD writing capability to dupe them. Far easier to make/mail, and cheaper too. Unless somebody important dies or Seattle gets "The Big One", I intend to make the SBS this year for sure. So far packing DVD's aboard an aircraft is legal  so some major distribution could occur there....

Don

Sneaks, send me a PM with your complete name and mailing address--I will get another vhs copy made asap and send it to you to work your magic!!!

Terry,

Send me a copy too and I will cut some DVDs also. I'll bring my computer on the Erie trip and we can watch it that way. No sense lugging a TV around!

Thanks for saving my Mug and Maps. Your plan to stay Sunday in Seneca Falls is fine with us.

Dun

I love the way a great plan with great input from all people comes together. Time to study the charts.

See you there. I am planning to come out on the 6th or the 7th, go up and see my friend, and be ready to go when we go.

Fred

PS Count me in on a disk.
