well, darn. My work schedule, which is now part time and arranged to have me off Thursday thru Tuesday twice a month is perfect...except this trip coincides with my short (regular) weekend. I am not going to make this event... :(

I don't think we're going to make it either. Thought it would be nice to meet more cbrats but we've met half a dozen in Florida over the summer. Can't justify the expence of 2500 mile round trip at this time. Maybe next year. Hope you have a good meet.

Following is helpful information submitted by “smittypaddler” for last years gathering, still applies.

The procedures for locking through are fairly straightforward. You won't need extra fenders, though you'll probably have to clean the fenders you use, as the walls are rather slimey. The lock supplies lines, so don't worry about extras, though a boathook is handy for grabbing a line as it's handed down from on top of the wall by the lock tender. Here's a cut-and-paste of a description I posted in a thread in 2009:

Locking through single-handed isn't a problem, though I was nervous the first 50 times or so. If it's not windy, a single line from the top will do. Someone will usually drop the line to you. Sit on the cockpit edge on the side of your boat away from the wall, giving you a little better leverage holding the boat against the wall. I put out three fenders. If you're alone, ask the lockmaster if you can just float in the middle. When I do, I place my boat in the miiddle of the lock, fore and aft pointed at the sid e walls. This way if the boat starts to drift towards a wall, a little forward or reverse puts you back in the middle. You're very unlikely to drift from the middle all the way to either end.

Depending on what part of the Mississippi you're on, you'll hail locks 1 to 24 on channel 14, 25 to 27 on channel 12. You'll annoy the lockmaster if you call on the radio before you arrive at the lock. When you arrive, try to be as concise in your transmission as you can, e.g. "Lock 5, this is a northbound recreational craft at the entrance, looking for a lift." This way in the fewest words possible, the lockmaster knows what kind of craft you are, where you're located, and what direction you're headed.

There's a traffic signal, red, yellow, and green, at the mouth of the lock, up above the wall. Don't enter the lock, or even approach to within about 150 feet, until the gates are fully open and you see a green light. If you violate this, the lockmaster will have harsh words for you. Don't leave the lock, or even let go of the line if you're on the chamber wall, until you hear the horn sound after the gates are open. Again, rush out too fast and the lockmaster will likely say unkind things. Enter and leave slowly, no more than 3 knots. Keep it slow exiting until you clear the end of the wall, usually 1000 feet or so past the gates. I find it specially annoying to have some huge cruiser boom past me as I'm leaving. Sometimes those guys pay with a citation when they get to the next lock.

Sometimes you'll have to wait an hour or so. Commercial traffic gets priority, and the bigger tows have to be broken down before they'll fit in the lock. This means the lock will have to cycle up and down twice, with the additional time in between to break the barges apart and then put them back together again. I just get off to the side, out of the way, shut off the engines, and throw out the lunch hook.

Relax. After a while it's fun. I enjoy it now, though in the beginning it was scary.

Navigating the Mississippi: Being in the channel on the Mississippi River means staying between the red and green buoys.

Nun Buoy: These cone-shaped buoys are always marked with red markings and even numbers. They mark the edge of the channel on your starboard (right) side when entering from open sea or heading upstream.

Can Buoy: These cylindrical-shaped buoys are always marked with green markings and odd numbers. They mark the edge of the channel on your port (left) side when entering from open sea or heading upstream.

"We Have Met The Enemy and He Is Us"

Hello Vince in Omaha and anyone else with conflicting schedules during the National Mississippi River Gathering,

Just a thought.

I know that many are having scheduling conflicts during the time of our gathering.

Sign up anyway, knowing that you are welcome to drop in for a day of so without bringing your boat/s, stay at the Hilton Hotel which is less than a mile away (at the Dubuque Dog Track).

You and yours are welcome to take part in whatever in going on the day/s that you are there, visit with everyone, look over all the boats and get a feel for the surrounding community and our gathering which are purposely designed similar to a family reunion.

Just a thought.

Regards,

Ron Fisher

We just pulled into American Marine with Journey On and had dinner at Catfish Charlie's. Following are a few comments.

The marina is nice, met Charlie and the food was good. It was also 101 outside, so we spent time at the bar, enjoying the coolth. Everyone was friendly and Alana, the lady at the service/parts desk, gushed over C-Dorys.

Coming into the marina, since the river is low takes care. As you enter, come straight in from the river, parallel to the rocky barge bank across the marina and make a hard right into the marina. I didn't and dug up some mud.

Anyway it seems like an enjoyable place.

Boris

"We Have Met The Enemy and He Is Us"

Hello from Iowa,

For this years gathering, no efforts have been made to collect or solicit anything for the “loot” table as we did for previous gatherings.

However, I have been reminded that there are individuals and product vendors that would like to send something to be given away to those attending the gathering.

If that is the case, please contact me for a shipping details.

This year, we now have seventeen signed up (including our CD) and anticipate twenty to twenty two boats attending the gathering.

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

Hello from Iowa,

Let’s try something different for the upcoming “National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering in Dubuque, Iowa in September.

Since most everyone attending will be hauling their boats over some long distances, except Texstar who is coming by river via Pittsburgh to Iowa, I believe that a very big part of the adventure is “just getting there”.

So this year we are posting the gathering’s photo album address/location “now” and encourage everyone attending to send their photos and comments during their preparation to travel and during their travel adventure/journey in “just getting there”.

An ideal way to meet everyone before the gathering.

Here is the link, please start posting; http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... _album.php

Well, I don't know about how far and how many, but we only have shy of two hours to tow Midnight Flyer down from Stoughton (near Madison). Last time I was there with a boat, just a few years ago, I used a nice launch on a peninsula near the Yacht Basin there. Is that ramp still avaiilable for free with overnight parking of the tow rigs allowed? Thanks. Colby

One C-Brat is enroute to Dubuque right now.

Bixby's Cub left Texas today enroute to Pittsburgh, and will start down the Ohio River, headed for Dubuque on Friday.

Colby & Tex,

Thank you for your messages.

Hello Colby, there is free ramp access at the Yacht Basin for those attending the gathering along with free parking for tow vehicles, I have not checked out any other facilities.

Hello Tex, keep the updates and photos coming of your adventure “down the Ohio River, headed for Dubuque”.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

Hello from Iowa,

When arriving at the American Marine Yacht Basin Facility, 1630 E. 16th St. Dubuque, IA. 52001, C-Brats can check in for directions to the ramp and where their tow vehicles are to be parked with either the General Manager Bob Runberg (563-588-9564, Bob’s office is in the sales office directly north of Catfish Charlie’s Restaurant) or with Diane Averkamp (563-557-9700, Diane’s office is in Catfish Charlie’s Restaurant).

Diane also is responsible for the assignment of slip space and will direct everyone to their designated slip.

Also ask Diane for the free WIFI access code.

Our first photo is posted in the Mississippi River Album.

Three rivers stadium in Pittsburgh, PA

We have traveled 1400 land miles and are now on the water, enroute and will have traveled 1600 river miles to make the "Mississippi River Gathering". It is worth the trip.

If your are within a thousand miles, you have no excuse.

We are just downriver from Brandenburg, Ky

We had lunch with a friend, Jerry Hay at a riverfront restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky at noon today. Jerry is a professional riverlorian, and author of the book "Beyond the Bridges".

He is a fellow river rat and paid story teller on the big steam riverboats. He is leaving tomorrow to go on a lower Mississippi River trip on the American Queen steamer, spinning yarns along the way.

I was able to get Jerry to donate a couple of autographed copies of his book, that I will give as a door prize to some lucky C-Brats at the gathering.

Tex and Sharon

Hello Tex and Sharon,

Good to hear from you two and the update of your adventures progress.

Thank you for looking out for the gathering by picking up two autographed copies of Jerry Hay’s book, anything that anyone wants to add to the loot pile is up to them and welcome, but not required.

This week I have started sending out news releases to surrounding news papers and weekend magazines, to be published in the week/s before the gathering, announcing the gathering and inviting the public to come visit the Mississippi River C-Brats and their CD’s with an “Open House” on Saturday.

The new “Meet In The Middle” - “National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering” banner (2’ high X 10’ long) was ordered today and the 3” diameter attendance buttons will be in sometime next week.

Pat and Ken Frey brought their CD (Pelican) up river last Saturday, we had a great visit.

The clock is ticking, we will see you in Dubuque.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

"We Have Met The Enemy and He Is Us"

A success story,

Just heard from Dennis Leonhardt, who will be bringing his CD to the gathering in Dubuque.

This is another successful story for our group, since Dennis came to last year’s gathering by himself from central wisconsin and at the same time Tom and Anna came over from Danville, Illinois, just to see and learn about CD’s.

Like everyone else that shows up at our gatherings, they were immediately welcomed and absorbed into our group.

Both Dennis and Tom/Anna will be attending this years gathering with their own C-Dory’s.

Also Todd England and family will be bring “Lil Sis” which they purchased from us last January.

So let be said that anyone interested or wants to learn about C-Dory boats are very welcome to come, take part and be part of our annual gatherings.

We now have eighteen boats signed up for this years gathering and if history repeats itself there will be a few more show up at the last minute.

OBTY, no one has to bring anything, however as noted on the invitation    (Posted: Sat Feb 11, 2012 2:06 pm    Post subject: “Meet In The Middle” )   - “Everyone can bring their favourite beer/wine (BYOB) and any snacks they wanted to share each afternoon/evening, tables will be provided on the Transient Docks (anytime), bring your lawn chairs.”

We will be bringing plates, cups, napkins and so on left from previous gatherings along with an extra coolers or two with bottled water.

The new banner is finished, the attendance buttons came in Monday, the weather will be fabulous and there is lots of things going on in and around Dubuque.

Also there have been news releases sent to over sixty (I lost count) surrounding news papers, inviting the public to come visit.

As we like to say around here before a great party, “come hungry”.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

Gathering Updates;

A - We travelled down river today, locked through and docked at the American Marine Yacht Basin Facility in Dubuque, Iowa.

Even though the water level/s are down on the Mississippi, we had absolutely no problems (just pay attention and stay in the channel).

The channel from the main channel to the American Marine Yacht Basin Facility has been dredged and is well marked.

-------------------

B - Diane showed me the reservation receipts for nineteen (19) C-Brats reserving slips for the gathering so far.

-------------------

C - Diane also said that very few have made reservations for the Thursday Evening Happy Hour Cruise and Friday Evening Sunset Dinner Cruise aboard the American Lady.

I did not block out reservations for either cruise and left those individual decision up to those attending.

Advance reservations are required, call Diane Averkamp: 563-557-9700

Just received a note from Lyle and Janda (Sea Saw), who were in NYC yesterday and just completed their list of places to see and do this summer: Erie Canal, Fontana Lake, 1000 Islands, Mystic Seaport, NYC etc., they are now in the Poconos and plan to be in Dubuque for the “National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering”.

Sea Saw makes twenty (20) boats (so far) that “for sure” that will be in Dubuque for the gathering, I’m glad we moved the gathering to Dubuque, we needed the room.

Anyone making the last minute decision whether to attend the “National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering” will find plenty of room and wonderful accommodations at the American Marine Yacht Basin Facility in Dubuque, Iowa.

Come on down!

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher
