09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

I just got off the phone with Rev. Wyzinsky at Nanaimo Maps and Charts (800 665-2513). This is a wonderful place on Church St in Nanaimo. It is within a couple of blocks of the downtown harbor.

I ordered Canadian Tide and Current Tables Volumes 5 & 6, which encompass Desolation Sound and areas north to the Broughtons. I also ordered Charts # 3312 which is a booklet with charts of Desolation Sound, plus charts 3543, 3544, 3545, 3546, 3515 & 3547. This takes you northwest and covers the Discovery Islands and all of the Broughtons.

He gave me a valuable piece of information that I'll pass along. Canadian law now requires paper charts onboard for all of the areas that you'll visit. It is considered as important as life vests and other safety equipment.

ON THE GROCERIES IN DESOLATION SOUND........HARIOT BAY ON EAST SIDE OF QUADRA ISLAND AND WHALETOWN ON CORTEZ ISLAND HAVE VERY WELL STOCKED MEDIUM SIZED STORES WITH MOST MEATS AND PRODUCE YOU COULD NEED AND PUBLIC DOCK SPACE TO ACCESS.

BOTH A VERY SHORT WALK FROM THE DOCK.

ON THE PAPER CHARTS.....I HAVE CRUISED AND FISHED THESE WATERS FOR FOURTY YEARS AND NEVER NEW THIS LAW IN CANADA.....AND I LIVE HERE.

IN THAT TIME I HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR A FISHING LISCENCE TWICE......BUT THAT'S IT.

HAVING SAID THAT.......IT IS GOOD ADVICE NOT TO RELY ON YOUR ELECTRONICS......AND HAVE PAPER CHARTS........AND IT MAY BE THE LAW.......IN BOTH COUNTRIES...........NOT SURE ON THAT.


I AM CRUISING UP FROM MY HOME IN VANCOUVER BC, CANADA, AND HOPE TO VISIT WITH YOU IN DESOLATION.....AND THEN CARRY ON TO THE BROUGHTONS, PORT HARDY WITH FINAL DESTINATION OF BELIZE INLET FOR BIG COHO AND GRIZZLY WATCHING.

Yes Rob, the chart law was a new one on me too. I doubt that he's saying it to sell charts. It's probably a law on the books, but I doubt that it's enforced very strictly. Hope we see you up there.

Just want to check into e-charts. I'm looking at $200 to buy the Vancouver 2G913XL3 Gold series chart that covers the area for Desolation Sound (& Gulf Islands, etc).

Is that what you bought?

That's the one we got...but printed out an Internet price of $170, and took that in to West Marine, they matched it (you have to print out a bona fide price from an Internet site and ask them to match it - they will).

Thanks for the inputs. I ordered the compact flash chart today, from Broken Leg Dave for $179 - no tax and $4 for priority mail shipping. Good deal.

Now, no excuse not to consider cruising to Desolation Sound, right?

Thought I would try to develop some more momentum on identifying potential meeting places throughout the course of the two week duration.

It appears that at least one rondeveaux spot has been identified for the 10th. and 11th. at Gorge Harbor. Any of you early birds made definite plans yet that you care to share? Sounds like Lyle and Fred could be way up north. As we are not putting in until Tuesday the 6th., we'll probably be hanging in the Desolation Sound area somewhere until that weekend. Tim

True Story Tim, it looks as though we're a fairly loose group until we tighten up come 9/10. Leaving as I am on 9/2, I might not see another Brat until somewhere in Desolation three to five days later. My initial fantasy was to cruise up and back together, but reality being what it is the 9/10 Gorge Harbor plan makes sense to me. Besides, that gives us some alone time.
 
Robbin and I can't make up our mind to cruise or take the ferry. I guess we will make that choice the day we leave. It sure would be nice to cruise with Brock all the way up.
Tim, I am going to bring my rods but not downriggers. I will be bottom fishing but what would I bring to jig for salmon, buzz bomb??? Is anyone going to bring a shrimp pot? I was wondering if it is worth it. What does a Canadian license cost and for how long?
 
Well, as David discovered, the ferry reservations do fill up...so the choice may be made for you if you wait!

I will be bringing a rod, maybe a shrimp pot, and an oyster knife for sure. I am counting on all of you to tell me how to use the fishing rod...we will get at least one license online for the time we are there, we will recoup it in oysters if nothing else...

Well it looks like Meander and crew will be able to meet up with some of the C-brats in Desolation during the first week of Sept. We're attending the funereal of our good friend today. True to the gentlemen he was he made sure to pass on at a time that inconvenienced the fewest people. We'll miss him.
Anyway Meander will be leaving from Vancouver August 25 and heading north as far as Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island. This is about 75 miles (I think) north of Campbell River in the general area of the Broughtons. After about a week of meandering around that area, fishing, crabbing, shrimping and exploring we'll be heading back to Desolation area to relax and meet as many of the C-brats as we can, returning to Vancouver by Sept 10.

To any of you who are undecided about whether to cruise up or take the ferry, if you can afford 2-3 extra days (over and above the 2 days it would take on the ferry up and back), cruise! There is so much to see on the way and a good part of the distance is in the sheltered water of the Gulf Islands. The biggest challenge is crossing the Strait of Georgia and Pat and Patty do that all the time!

Good point, Ron. I'm boatin'! (Maybe with Anita Marie.)

But by doing so I have to be careful not to get too comfortable down south in the Gulf Islands. Or Newcastle Island, a fabulous rock I could spend a week running around. By the way, did anyone see the special feature on Newcastle in the Seattle Times' Sunday travel section?
 
Buzz bombs should work Fred. It looks like they have expanded their color selection to include some flashy mylar. I've used Point Wilson Darts in the past with reasonable success when I can convince myself to quit trolling which is not very often. Four ounce in pearl, blue/silver, green/silver are good colors. They come in six ounce also, but I don't think we're going to have to fish very deep for silvers.

So, who is definitely cruising up? I thought I was off that fence until I read the last batch of comments.
