09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

Correct, and I have now had my vacation request approved for the 12th through the 16th, so we would be leaving Fall City on Friday evening, September 9th, for a departure bright and early on Saturday morning, the 10th, from Birch Bay, and would need to be back in Fall City by Sunday evening, the 18th. Routes kicked around include the ferry from Tsawwassen and up the Highway, going up from Blaine along the mainland coast, or crossing over from Blaine, up inside the Gulf Islands, and then crossing back over. I am leaning toward the latter route. Anybody else finalized how they are going to get there?

September 3-18,2005 is what was decided on.

Pat, yes and no. We'll see.

I just want to say that after talking to a certain gentleman at the boat show Friday night I propose we make the Broughton Islands our 2006 destination. That area must be fabulous! We can trailer to Telegraph Harbor on Vancouver Island. This year's DS cruise will prepare us for our next step north. I mean, provided we're still friends and all.

Hmmm...can I take that as a definite maybe?

OK, Mr. Cruise Director, we'll meet you there. Actually, can't we have multiple destinations?

Pat, do you mean multiple destinations for Desolation? Sure. I'd think on any of these extended cruises we can come and go as we please. For safety sake, though, we should have a general plan so we pretty much know where people are, and know when to expect them where. But I don't want people feeling like they always have to cruise as a group at the same time.

Absolutely. We will be coming up the second week you all are there, and we sure hope to find you all there somewhere! So, for safety sake, can you sort of propose where the group (which I assume will prefer to pretty much stay together for the most part) might be on any given day?

Team Desolation, well before September I want to huddle up with y'all and devise a game plan. We've already started, but let's grab our books and charts and expatiate at the February gig, Jarrell Cove, and all other gatherings. In the mean time let's think about what we'd like to see.

OK, here is the reply from Salmon Point Resort (a cut and paste)...This would be a great place to launch if you are going to ferry to Vancouver Island and drive up the Island Highway. You can contact Salmon Point via email:

"Salmon Point" <sales@salmonpoint.com>

Isn't that funny! I just anwsered another email just prior to this one from your group wondering why I didn't get in touch, but I didn't realize this was the same one. Too funny.
Our weekly parking price for vehicle and trailer is $35.00 per week plus gst. A launch which is in and out is $8.00 plus gst. We do have accommodation. Depending on what is booked it would run between $75.00 per night for 2 people + taxes to $150.00 for 4 people in a 2 bedroom cabin. We
require a 3 night minimum for advance bookings but will rent out for shorter term on 72 hr notice prior to the day you wish to reserve subject to availability. September is a pretty good month. Sounds like an exciting trip.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Monica Best

Janet and Chris,

The first three charts are scanned from the original. The next two are swiped from the web. The distance tables are scanned from the Canada Coast Pilot.

The distance tables can be saved to your computer and printed out.

Me too. Of course, I wouldn't think of going on a foreign expedition without a new windlass, anchor, batteries, inflatable and camper top. What a great excuse.

Voyage of Sailor-D, Desolation Sound, Part 3

I got sidetracked..............

We left you in lovely Lund on 5 Sep 04.
Tied up at dock, sunny and pleasant – Rosie the wharfinger a very pleasant person to deal with. Did our laundry at the laundromat and checked out the local sights – Lund is basically the end of the road from Powell river. To our shock we saw another C-Dory!! It was Ron launching “Meander” (he had trailered up from Vancouver). Had a bit of a natter and he was off – was good to meet other C-Dory people. We left the dock fuelled up and got underway on the morning of the 7 Sep, heading north through Thulin Passage. Sunny and a very leisurely trip with Copeland Islands Marine Park on the west side of the passage. Finally we cleared Sarah Point at 1030 hrs. It was absolutely spectacular, a perfect day, calm and sunny and the entire Desolation Sound opened up to us. We anchored in Galley Bay which is in the actual boundary of Desolation Sound Marine Park. The only other boat there was a very nice Hans Christian Andersen sailboat skippered by a gentleman from Seattle. He told us he drives by the C-Dory factory every day on the way to work! When he does work of course, he spends all his summers in the Desolation area. The weather dulled a bit and by evening it was raining. It rained on and off all night.
8 Sep – still raining, dog is wet but we are ok, warm and dry – some water coming in the camperback and sides, some places we did not apply seam sealeant. Weighed anchor at 1130 in the rain and headed off for Tenedos Bay, arriving at 1300 hr. Our plan was to anchor and go over to Lake Unwin and have a bath. After three anchoring attempts (was too rocky, not holding or too wind exposed) we finally anchored fairly close to shore. Still overcast. Very interesting spectacle unfolding, the luxury superyacht “Floridian” came cruising into the bay. It cruised about for over an hour (we opined a supper cruise) and finally anchored a short distance from us. Its helicopter then took off and its pursuit boat, equipped with twin 300 hp Yamahas arrived!! Rained heavily twice during the night.
9 Sep – Awakend by the the helicopter coming back to the Floridian. Overcast but warm, some sun peeking through the clouds. Leisurely breakfast and dog to shore. Large twin turbo float plane lands and disgorges more people for the Floridian – I bet we are having more fun though!! Took the tender over to Lake Unwin Provincial Park and trekked to the lake (very short easy distance) and we had bath, signs in evidence requesting you not use soap or shampoo – we used a tiny bit. The dog and me now smell a lot better.
10 Sep – 0630hr, weather still miserable and overcast – forecast ugly. We decide to make a run for Refuge Cove. Arrived at 0845, docked – there was plenty of space. Quaint little place but you are confined to the the dock and the store area. The rest of the Island (West Redonda Island) is privately held and occupied. The dock and store area is a former cannery. Store well stocked, good laundromat and showers, toilets a bit wobbly, small pet area – very pleasant place to visit. Couple of very nice Nordic Tugs arrive.

To be continued...................

Must be time for a sign-up page.

Do you guys have a firm date for the start of this grand adventure? If I don't have the exact dates, and retitle the discussion in a precise manner, then the Head Nerd poobs out on me and sends me scolding PMs. I just don't think I can take it anymore.

I can tell you this bittersweet bit of info, though. The TyBoo will not be able to join in this early fall cruise. We are still young enough to have children in grade school, you know. We do hope to have everything in order so we can take the kids cruising around the Canadian Gulf Islands right after Blakely. And maybe join the Victoria jaunt later in the fall (that is firmly a tradition now, isn't it?).

Let me know the proposed dates (they can be changed, so best guess is OK for now) for the Desolation trip, and I will do the deed.
