09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

We're sorry to say we'll have to miss the trip to Desolation Sound this year. We got a very rude awakening when Don got his schedule for the academic year only to find that he has to be back on campus a week earlier than we anticipated. Good thing my office is flexible so I was able to move my vacation up a week. We'll still get an opportunity to go, but not after Labor Day like we had hoped. So we've decided to go to Ilwaco for a few days and then up to Cornet Bay for a few. Hope you all have a wonderful trip.

Don and Dee

Not sure a goal was ever defined...some wanted to explore, others wanted to kick back, yet others wanted to fish...this is looking more and more like a bunch of stray cats all playing in more or less the same neighborhood. I am more of a dog person myself...pack mentality. Like you say, we will figure it out (or not) at Gorge Harbor, after you cats have had a week to play anyway.

...if our group's goal is to see as much of DS as possible in the time allotted.

How about chewing on this concept fellow C-Brats, submitted only in an attempt to provide some form of device to provide a bit more structure for the get together.

It seems to me this is a really big area we are going to and perhaps a plan would be to split up the trip. For example, first week south and second week north or even visa versa. Brocks earlier post provided a good description of how we could segregate the areas. We could poll on this thread in an attempt to gain a general consensus. My vote would be south the first week as we are arriving a bit later than the early birds but we're easy.

Once a general consensus has been reached, then we could follow a similar process to agree on one meeting place the middle of the first week and one the middle of the second. In an effort to define "middle"I would suggest Wednesday.

We're just a couple of puppy dogs here and want to get hooked up with the group for at least the first week. Once we get our feet wet, we may get a bit more adventurous. Tim

Don and Dee on Knotty C, I'm also sorry you can't make it. I'd say that's pretty darn rude of that school to be so thoughtless.

There will come a next time.

True Story,
I like your idea and we will be willing to meet up with others on any day. I haven't been to this area before and hope to visit as many of the high points as possible. I will be starting from Lund on Fri 2 Sep. As far as I can tell I will be the only one in DS that early. Where are you starting from?

Ken, we will be launching at Salmon Bay Resort on the 3rd. We plan on heading to Prediux Haven Saturday. If it is to crowded we may move on to Grace Harbor area.
I am still iffy about bringing my fishing stuff, what do you think?

Fred

True Story, nicely stated. CAVU, we'll be there soon after you arrive, just on the other side.

Right now I need to get back on the B.C. Ferry site and register for a float across the strait. I'd rather cruise Bambina, but I think this is the more prudent maneuver.

Fred,
I plan on bringing fishing gear. I hope to find a little fishing and even if I can only catch one rockfish, thats enough for a meal. There should be decent fishing over near Campbell River. I will just look for the local boats fishing and try where they are. As for crowded anchorages, it will be Labor-Day weekend so I would expect crowds. We will leave Lund on Sat morning and head over toward Prideaux. Should be about a 20mi run so we will get there fairly early if we get a reasonable start and the weather cooperates. See you there.

Okay, (borrowed from Pat) at this late date the best available scoot from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo was Saturday the 3rd at 5:15 a.m. Can someone please give me a wakeup call?

From there I'll drive to Salmon Bay, and like I said to True Story Tim who will be at Campbell River Monday, monitor 68 and look for me/us at either Roscoe Bay, Refuge Cove refueling, or Prideaux Haven.

It's after midnight. Goodnight, friends.

Meander and crew are launching from Vancouver and heading for Desolation Sound late this afternoon or early tomorrow. Unfortunately our holidays run out before we would like and we have to be back in Vancouver on the 10th so we'll miss the Gorge Gathering of C-Cats. We will be at Gorge Harbour August 30 or 31st though so maybe we'll see some of the earlier departeds there. 8) We'll monitor channel 16, and the binoculars and if we spot anything resembling a C-Dory, whether in packs or individually we will rush rapidly, racing rambunctiously to greet you! :P
Cheers
Ron

OK (just to keep Catman happy), between the 2nd and 5th, while you guys are playing in DS, Patty and I will be in LaConner, with Daydream tied up next to the Patricia Ann, the tug in the Lee Mann posters, celebrating the (gulp) 38th anniversary of our nuptials (September 1, 1967, Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, Seattle, WA). Like we say, 36 damn years and two pretty good ones!

Hi Brats, Just wanted to wish you a safe and pleasant trip to Desolation Sound , etc. We will be at our campsite at Rock Bay for the next 2 weeks with Del and Trudy ( C-U ). Rock Bay is near Chatham Point on Johnston Strait and Discovery Passage . We understand that some of you may be heading into this area. We will be keeping a sharp eye out for any C-dories. If you are passing through give us a call ( Cute-C on Channel 14 VHF ). We will probably be in search of Moby Salmon. Note for you fisherman, sockeye are closed to all fishing.
Hope to meet up with some of you. :beer :beer :photo

Canadian unmet pals Meander and Cute-C, I already like you, and I hope we can race rapidly to engage in a Canadian/American summit at sea level somewhere. With Molsons, of course. Cute-C, you're really gettin' my attention with those killer 16 photos. Dude, you guys rock.

And if we indeed make Blind Channel, heck, we're only 10 miles away...
:smiled

By the way, Canadian comrades, have you scheduled mild weather for your southern Brat buds?

Brock,
Summers are our most stressful work period of the year, and this year has been the hardest of the 12 years that we've been in business. So for us, we're just so excited to be getting away on the boat for two weeks that there are no wrong places or plans.

Even though you're leaving after us, it looks like you'll be awake in Naniamo before we will on Saturday morning. We're still planning on spending the first week in the Broughtons. I talked to Greenway Sound Marina and he said that the boaters had started leaving before the 20th. When I talked to him last week he said he had 3 boats in 35 slips. Pierre's Bay said that their restaurant would be closed. So unless some of the folks who've said they may come that far north show up, we'll have a pretty solitary first week.

That means we'll be ready for a C-Brat party the second week. We're ready to explore and head north through the rapids to Blind Channel. If there are restaurants at the end of the trip, so much the better. If we end up exploring some of the famous places and anchorages in southern Desolation Sound we've heard about, that would be great too. Has anyone told the Gorge Harbor Marina how many boats are showing up on the 10? I hear there is a good restaurant there. Are we going to potluck it there, or book the restaurant? (Shelley says--book the restaurant.)
Lyle

Lyle, it sounds like it will be nice and quiet up there for you and Shelly that first week. I may see you on the road driving north, or perhaps in Nanaimo. By the way, folks, my phone number is (206)713-0642.

I just called Gorge Harbor Marina and spoke with Helen. Actually, it's Helene, a French name which after fumbling the pronunciation for me was simplified to the former. "You can call me Helen," Helene patiently offered. Phone number (250)935-6433, I reserved room for eight 25 footers on Saturday the 10th. Not exactly sure how many feet we'll need but 200 should suffice.

Lunch won't be available at the restaurant there, but they open for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Lyle, I like Shelly's idea regarding the restaurant. I imagine after travelling to get there people will simply want to relax and be served.

And by the way, I do believe that is the first error in print I have ever seen you make.
