08/27 - 08-29 - Langley Cruise and Clam Dig

Hi! Everyone...we are planning to come to Langley, but as we just got Judy Blue Eyes repaired and up and running again, we are not prepared to spend the night. We live in Sandy Hook, which is just around the bend from Langley, we may just drive in on Saturday, so we can join you all and meet everyone. If we do motor in, it will be for the day on Saturday. As this is our first boat, we are still learning how to get our feet wet, as well as learning how to dock, etc. One thing we have accomplished is crabbing..we have caught lots of crabs in the last 3 weeks. Looking forward to meeting you all. John and Judy

Is there anyone leaving Friday afternoon that would not mind giving Robbin a lift over to Langley? She is good company and doesn't make to much of a mess.

Fred

Fred, I wish that we could accomodate you by bringing Miss Robbin to Langley on Friday........however, due to an abundance of obligations that came up for us on Friday, we'll be busting our tails to get over for the day on Saturday and we'll have to return home Saturday evening as obligations are also going to inhibit any gathering for us on Sunday. :sad

That being said, we hope to see everyone on Saturday! :smilep

(I'll be bringing the C-Brat Banner with me on Saturday unless I connect with someone to bring it over on Friday.)

We are definitely going on Friday, and Robbin is of course more than welcome to come over on Daydrean...our problem is, we do not know exactly when we will be able to clear Fall City to head for the launch in Everett...it could be 5:00 pm, it could be later. If that works, give us a call to figure out arrangements. Home 425-222-7730, Patty cell 425-443-7020, Pat cell (and good luck!) 425-765-6606...

Hey Hey Hey
The time is getting close.
just a reminder for you all, don't forgrt to bring your shovel & buckets for the dig. and also the WSDFW has not closed crabbing yet so we will be puttin some pots in .

I have decided to try launching at Everett so will hopefully be puttin in around noontime. maybe a little earlier.

Hey there Judy Blueeyes
where can we put the crab pots over your way???? I was thinking of puttin them in Elger Bay on Camano but it is a long run over there just to set the pots if we launch in Everett. ????

We're planning to head over Friday afternoon and can drop a couple of crab traps on the way as well. We're coming from Sandy Hook (we just moved TwoLuckyFish in almost next to Judy Blue Eyes!). We've been crabbing just outside Cultus Bay, and have caught a few keepers, along with lots of under sized and females. We pulled today and caught three (in two traps), so...

I thought Elger Bay was "almost" on the way to the clamming beach, so I figured we'd drop two traps Friday on the way in to Langley, then check Sat am and again after clamming. We might have even more traps to set if I can recover some tomorrow that I put in deep water (oops!).

Seeing as we are "locals", and this is our first C-Brat adventure, what can we bring? We could harvest some corn, and have a ton of cucumbers. What do you do with cucumbers? They don't seem to work as crab bait, and no salmon has even hit one that we know....

We've been clamming at Double Bluff (other side of Whidbey) with great success, but can't figure how to clam from a boat without a dingy. We are ready and willing, but need suggestions?

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Mac& Linda,

Two Lucky Fish

Welcome Mac & Linda
The corn is taken care of. I have about 8 acres of it planted for fresh market so I will be bringing it.

As for Elger Bay, yes it is on the way over to the Clam beds but is a ways accross and north from Langley. on flat water it is about a 20 minute run full out. but if the water is at all lumpy you are looking at 30 to 40 minutes crossing. I was thinking about laying the pots just outside Langley Friday and pull on the way to clamming on Sat. morning. if there arn't very many crab we could move them to Elger Bay then.I have 4 pots to set .

Hi Roger,

We have had a bit of success with the whole crabbing thing. First, you must understand that we are really newbys, but have paid a lot of attention to what others have found to be successful. We usually put out two pots, sometimes as many as four if we have enough licensed crew aboard. Although we have used turkey legs and frozen carb 'bait' available at various retail outlets, we have had by far our best results using horse clams and salmon heads and other parts that I personally don't care for. We leave the pots out for 12 to 24 hours.

We live at the south end of Whidbey Island at Sandy Hook. We drop our pots in 30 to 45 feet of water along Possession Bar, approximately 1/2 mile south of Possession Point.

I really suspect that you will have good luck almost anywhere from Langley around to Possession Point if you just use horse clams and leave them out overnight. We had our whole family here for the past two weeks and in that time we trapped 50 keeper Dungeness crabs, using horse clams and salmon.

We hope that this helps...

Hi! Mac...regarding your cucumbers....grab a big bowl, combine THINLY sliced cucumbers, onions, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper...let sit overnight. This goes well as a salad with salmon or crab. This is a recipe from John's Grandmother in West Virginia, but we have adapted it to the NorthWest using Walla Walla sweets. Maybe you can't catch salmon with them, but it goes well with it. We went blackberry picking last week, so I will bring some Blackberry Cobbler to the pot luck. See you all soon.

Judy

Hi Judy and crew,

I have been making the Walla Walla Onion Salad for many years. My recipes also uses chopped Cilantro and some thinly sliced red bell peppers for color.
I have an aunt and uncle that have lived at Sandy Hook for a long time. Don and Jean Goodfellow. They used to have "Poor Jeans" a shop in Langley.

Will miss the Langley trip this year. It is a fun week-end. Have a great time.

Mac and Linda, Judy and John, nice to have you join us. I think you'll have fun with this weekend's bunch, and find you might like to come to future gigs.

OK, no poll on the beer...it always comes out "Whatever Brock wants" anyway. I hope Brock wants Copperhead, because that is what I am bringing...

Where are you planning on meeting for dinner Friday evening? Judy of the Bue Eyes and I will probably just drive up Friday for dinner and the BS session and then motor around early Saturday AM for the clamming, communal BS and general socializing. If Mac and Linda are not boating around on Friday, perhaps they could ride up with us???

Mike's Place has great food, including all you can eat fish, chips and chowder; the downside is that they close at 8:00pm. Cafe Langley serves really good Mediterranean food and there are serveral other very good restaraunts in the downtown area. All of this to ask: where are you planning to have dinner Friday evening?

Carol's brother visited us last week and not only did we get him out crabbing with us two times, but he also enjoyed several of your brews that we purchased at Haggens in order to be sure that he experienced the true flavor of the Pacific Northwest. Copperhead was his preference, so when I talk to him on the phone, I'll let him know that he departed too soon and won't be able to partake of Copperhead out of the keg! I'm certain that he'll be crying his eyes out! :cry :cry :cry :cry

We have not decided where to eat yet. So just drive on down to the marina and find us on the dock and we can decide then. probably won't try to get up the hill till around 7 PM. maybe 6:30 but want as many as possible.

Finally I can smell the fresh air. Two weeks of work without a day off makes for a very appreciative upcoming weekend.

Cynthia made a pot of beans for the dock hounds, and that includes Coco too!

We should be there somewhere around 8:00 p.m. Friday night.
