08/22 - 08/24 - Victoria BC Gathering

To all C-brats, I would like to propose an August , Victoria BC c-dory gathering, weekend.

I am unsure about the date. A few of us were talking about Friday August 22rd thru Monday 25th OR labor day weekend Friday august 29th through Tuesday sept 2. We had originally talked about staying at the marina in front of the Empress hotel, that being the Causeway marina. See link. However on Labor Day the marina is hosting the classic boat festival and only the wharf street marina is open for moorage. I would have to call for these weekends to see about openings. I know not all people are available due to school starting and holiday trips. The weekend of august 15-17 is out as that weekend in Victoria is the dragon boat races, which might be really crowded.

There are plusses and minuses to Labor Day. Wharf Street will give a 15% discount to a group of 7 or more boats as long as they are not already full with reservations by now. And more boats to see at the festival. But the minus is that we cannot be in front of the Empress hotel and the area might be really crowded. Wharf street marina is nice but just a block north. it is in front of the maritime museum and the best ever halibut fish and chips booth
The price for the Wharf street moorage is 1.60 per foot and closer to the bathrooms and showers. We had talked about how nice it would be to stay at the “Causeway Harbor” in front to the Empress hotel, the cost is 1.80$ per foot, but again only available on August 22-25th. I have not called yet, but I will need an estimate of how many boats anyway.

So let get the conversation started and we can get a sign up sheet.……as on Saturday night live…”talk amongst your selves”

Thanks , Susan Elliott

Susan,

Sounds like a great idea. I have not been into Victoria on my own boat yet and that sounds like fun. Knowing this far ahead I should be able to make work arrangements, so count me in. I may be able to talk my sister and brother-in-law into making that trip. They would love it too.

Count SleepyC in on this one. Weekend preference would be 8/22-25, but would be open to another although would prefer to use this for a kick-off trip for Labor Day weekend in the islands.

Good idea Susan!

We would definitely be interested. For Tanya and I the longer Labor Day August 29th weekend would be better but - like Harvey - we will try to adapt to whatever the majority prefers.

Keep the Victoria Gathering talk going ... would be a great opportunity since we also have never been to Victoria on our boat.

Take care,
Dan, Tanya, and Hannah on C-Renity

Denise and I would certainly be interested. we had planned on being down that way around then anyway. we want to go all through the san juans and Puget sound this year as we have never done this.

Labor Day Weekend is the Victoria Antique Boat Show. Causeway Floats will be taken up by the Show. The Wharf Street Docks probably will be full also.

Hi, Tom here. Well yes and no. We will not be holding a La conner gathering this year. We want to try another spot in the sound in late july maybe. More on that later.

This gathering is just another gathering of friends is a spot we have not had a gathering before. It is all Susan's idea and her show. Should be a lot of fun.

I will be riding in the Tour de Victoria cycle race on the 24th so I can't be sure about bringing the boat round. There will certainly be a lot of excitement in the city that day as the finish line is in front of the legislature at the harbour. Shouldn't be any effect on the moorage from that event though.

Sounds like a great trip. I spent 3 days in that harbor waiting to move a sailing vessel from Victoria to Seattle in the Fall of 2011 under power. We went directly from Victoria to Port Townsend only to get a quick lesson in International border crossing via boat. We were accepted into the US after an awkward 2 or 3 hrs of phone calls back and forth to homeland security folks.
We also learned about the straights of Juan de Fuca and the power of the tidal flow.(Against the tide we were making 2-3 knots) We also were advised to change course by the US Navy on our swing south out of Port Townsend.
These are issues I expect will not happen to all of you on this trip because you will not blindly jump into a trip like that w/o some research.
By the way I was just riding along with my friend who owned the boat and trusted the captains judgment. Great trip and I enjoyed Victoria. Well worth a walk through the Empress and a drink at the Tiger Bar.(20-25$)
If you go you will enjoy the gathering. Peter Z There a a few photos of the Permagrin trip in my album.

PZ,

Lessons learned. I have seen all kinds (as I'm sure many of you have), around the PNW waters. There are a couple of things that are always considerations...... tide/currents and customs. Neither of which we have any power to affect.

Great idea. We would love to make it happen. We'll have to see. Only so many vacation days. This work thing sure gets in the way. :smilep

Lisa and I will be there! Prefer Labor Day but the weekend of the 24th is good too. I will be bringing the Knotty C and Lisa will likely travel by ferry. Sounds like the Causeway and Wharf St might both be booked on LD. We are both looking forward to Victoria.

We have two people for the august 22-25 and 2 prefer labor day.

I put in an email to the harbor master to check on space. This now bring the thread back to the top. I will let you know when I hear back from the marina.

I received a reply from Thora Brooks, reservation specialist at Victoria harbor.

In short

= there is a non refundable reservation fee to reserve space at either dock. 105$ (can) for up to 12 boats, 157.50$ for 10-20 boats. This charge is separate from the moorage fees. The Reservation fee I suggest can be taken out of the C-brat Kitty.

=Moorage rates, no group discount on moorage, just a group discount for reservation of space. Moorage at the Causeway marina in front of the empress hotel is 1.80$ per foot. The Wharf Marina is 1.60$ per foot . Again Canadian….. (I love that their money called loonies and toonies)

=Dates August 22nd through 25th at the causeway marina and Wharf marina, both are Available now for a group booking.

or

=August 29th through Sept 2nd at the Wharf Marina. The Causeway is booked up with the Classic Boat Festival so only the Wharf st marina is available this weekend. Also The Wharf st marina will be rafted up so power and space are limited.

She recommends the first choice, Aug. 22-25 as they do have lots of space and with power at this time at both marinas. She also recommend that we pay the reservation fee for the up to 12 boats and if more boats come last minute they call in individually to reserve, or the group fee goes up to $157.50 for up to 20 vessels. or they may not even need to reserve as I got the impression that the have a policy of rafting up boats no matter what. Which is fine for cdory to cdory. Not sure I like rafting to a sail boat as we have a dog ,and some will want power. I will address that again with here when we pick a date. May be another plus for reserving the date of aug 22nd-25th.

They have a 48hr cancellation policy so changes to any booking can be made 48hrs before the arrival with no penalties. Any late change/cancellation penalties are one nights moorage fees. For this reason they do ask for credit card details from each vessel owner

They have a washroom/shower/laundry facility next to the old customs dock, about 5mins walk from the Causeway. They are open 24/7 with your code. Public washrooms are closer on the Causeway but they close at sunset.

I am leaning towards the date of august 22, but could entertain the weekend after Labor day. If we go with labor day I need to make reservations now and only at the wharf marina. ... which can be done.
