08/19 - 08/25 - Adventure in Paradise - Catalina Island 2007

Brent/Dixie, heck, Steve can stay on my boat and I'LL STAY WITH YOU GUYS.

Sorry, don't know much about the Chase Park accommodations very well, I just know it's first come first serve.

Brent,

Chase Park is first come, first served, but it's never been a problem for Sunday night. Most people are gone by Sunday morning or afternoon. After you launch, come down channel to Chase Park, tie up in any vacant spot, and go up to the office to register. By noon, I should be there to help.

Thanks Mike, We will watch for you.

Swanny, Dixie says she didn't know you were that kinda guy! She figured it was your way of getting your share of that "good" boxed wine. So she says the offer still stands  My wife is such an embarrassment sometimes!

Rather bad news for me. I've been recovering nicely from a back spasm that I had last week, and thought I'd be ok by Catalina, but had a setback today that's going to keep me from going. I had planned to take my dog, and worried about lifting her in and out of the boat from the dingy, rowing the dingy, etc. etc.. But today, the final decision was made for me.

My plan, however, is to still motor down to MDR on Sunday with my dog, and stay overnight at Chase Park. I should be ok for that with the dock right alongside. Will bring the meat and charcoal for the barbecue Monday night and transfer it to one of you going over Monday morning. So, it'll kinda be like a "no host" barbcue, with the host not there. I'll return to Channel Islands Harbor on Monday. Sorry, give my love to Wendy!!

Tim Braue of Catalina Yachts Brokerage (C-Dory dealer) will be coming over on Thursday, staying until Saturday, and hosting the Friday night resturant dinner. He's coming over in a 25' C-Dory. His telephone # is 310-968-3070.

Bummer!!

Mike.

Bummer indeed. Why don't you defer the final decision until Sunday. Maybe you will make a good recovery, between now and then. Won't be the same without you. Worst case we can take the meat over for you, but hope you can attend.

Brent and Dixie

Mike, sorry to hear about your situation, you know your own body better than anyone. But let me throw this out, would you be able to ride in someone else's boat (maybe mine), no crewing, just sitting, sleeping, eating for a week? Just a thought.

Mike, maybe you should think about getting one of them fancy new CD 29s for a smoother ride. (Sorry, I couldn't help it this time. Butt ugly - cracked me up, as did Joel's response.)

I do feel for you. I recall your back was bothering you a little the first time I met you at the SBS a couple years ago. Same situation this time?

Wish you the best and I'm sorry you have to miss out on part of the Paradise adventure.

Mike- that is unacceptable!!
Catalina will not be the same- you have to be there.
I'm sure you can find some one to dogsit for you so you won't be lifting her in/out of the boat.
Either way- hope you feel better soon.
We'll be leaving CIH Sunday, around 0800, with Sea3Po and a couple from the Yacht Club (in their boat) and maybe Islander and Gizmo.

I'm unable to make the early part of the week although I will visit you at MDR on Sunday afternoon/evening. Any plans for pizza Sunday night? I will play it by ear about joining the fleet at the end of the week. Work has been tough and I need to get things in order for all the bosses and big customers to be happy so they can enjoy their yachts. Sorry to be so unable to commit, but my career is what pays for life's necessities and pleasures. Boy I'm jealous of you who are retired. I recently got my SS statement and look like I'd be wise to work until I'm 70... many more years in the salt mine. See you all Sunday. I do wish I could enjoy the entire week with you.

Keith, C-Pup

But Mike, nobody grills the tri tip like you!! Please reassess. That is too much responsibility for the rest of us to handle.

We will be at the island on Sunday morning, but must depart on Thursday. Our first grandchild is due anytime after 2pm Thursday!

We are looking forward to seeing everybody (including Mike) next week.

Sam and Kerry

This is a free concert held at the park by the guest docks. Saturday evening is "One of the founding figures of the Bossa Nova movement in
Brazil, Oscar Castro-Neves, brings a group of the most distinguished
instrumentalists in the world today to join him performing Bossa Nova
favorites and music from Oscar's latest album, "All One"." The guest dock will be fully occupied Saturday, but not all boats spend the entire night so it opens up after the concert is over. A downside to spending Saturday night on your boat is the clang clang clang of workers dismantling the stage after the concert and dropping pipes on the pavement until 1:30 in the morning. If I were to put my boat on the guest dock Saturday, I'd enjoy the concert then go fish the bay over the sewer pipeline for sand bass under the night sky.
You can also enjoy free jazz at the MDR Fisherman's village. No guest dock there, but leave your boat on the guest dock at the park and take the free water taxi.
Saturday, August 18 - Gregg Wright (Jam Band, Reggae to R&B)
Sunday, August 19 - CJS Quintet (Classic Jazz, Bebop, Swing & Latin)
2-5PM, 13755 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey. For recorded information, call 310-823-5411.

Keith, C-Pup.

I am ready for the Catalina trip. I am about to be smoked out! I need some fresh air.
This is a view from the front yard as the smoke from the Zaca Fire pours over the mountains. Tha fire is about 20 miles from us at this time.

Roger, aren't you afraid of it enroaching on your house while you're away? Looks pretty bad.

Well now I've got a bit of bad news. I wasn't sure whether my work or home problems would get in the way of this trip. Work is fine now, but my newly replastered pool (2 wks) has a severe leak, about 400 gals/day. After 2 wks of sluething, plugging and isolating, the plasterers have determined: 1) It's 'mostly' from the spa, and 2) Not their problem (even though it didn't leak before the replaster!). Monday is the soonest anyone can come out and do a real leak (pressure) test. If I'm lucky, they'll fix it the same day.

So, looks like Tuesday is soonest I'll be able to come over. I hate to miss the tri-tip dinner (worst part :amgry ). I have potatoes, won't do any good here, I'll see if I can get down to MDR Sunday eve and hand them off, not sure.

Hi,

I'm a new C-Dory owner and I was planning to visit you guys next week at the island for at least a couple days. Tonight I did my first oil change (20 hours) and gearcase oil on my VTEC 90. The oil looked good, but the gearcase drain plug had a bunch of metal shavings sticking out like magneticly repelled whiskers. I'm extremely disappointed, to say the least. I'll have to make a call or two tomorrow to see what the dealer and/or Honda will do about it. This really sucks.

It's a long way from Vista to Ventura, and through LA on top of that. I wonder how many trips and how much time this will take. They still owe me a hydraulic steering hose from when I bought the boat back in June. It was badly kinked when new. I made a bend radius limiter gizmo and it's holding together, but I'm sure it isn't really safe for the long run.

I haven't heard from them, but they've been busy with boat shows, and I've been busy, so I've been waiting. The waiting ends tomorrow. Time for some phone calls.

So sad......

Gizmo was trying to bail out of a local annual fishing trip with good friends here in the Sierra Nevada to make it to the C-Dory Catalina Criuse on Sunday. I was shamed by my friends and must not meet you guys this year. Thanks, I'll see you next year for sure. I hope with a 19'.

Hi folks! I just popped onto the site and realized that the Catalina gathering is coming up. Since I'm busy making preperations for a 5 day trip to Lake Mohave on the 23rd, I won't ba able to attend this year's festivities. I'll certainly miss everyone's company.
I see that you're planning a fishing trip to SBI sometime during the week. Just as a heads up, there are reports of striped marlin and sword fish being caught in the vacinity of the Avalon Bank 33 14 22N 118 12 29W
, south east of the 152 spot 33 14 22N 118 09 62W and off the 14 Mile Bank 33 20 74N 117 52 59W. Good luck!
I'll be there in spirit.
