07/27 - 07/29 - Comox, Vancouver Island, BC Gathering

We'll be down to one Ranger at Comox with us, we'll be cruising with two Rangers but one has decided to break off and hook up with the Tugnuts in Ganges while we go to Comox.

Are there any more who plan on tieing up at the dock next month who have not yet PM'd me ? So far I have 5 boats who have contacted me. I'm off to see the wharfinger soon to get our space reserved. I don't want to leave this until the last minute and then find out we have to scatter all around the marina.

Martin.

Hi Martin,

We are planning on attending and will be coming from the La Conner gathering. We would like space at the dock if still available.

Thanks,
Steve and Karen

We will be on the anchor in front of your place. Is it ok to bring the dog? Where can we take him to shore for potty break? I have a dinghy with a motor so we can take him to park if one is close by.

Thanks for the replies and PMs about tying up at the dock. We are about 50/50 on tying up and anchoring off. So that is a good mix.
Thomas, you will be anchored about 200 yds from a sandy beach and an area to give your dog a run, so no problems there.
I will post all the details for the gathering at the end of this month.

Martin.

Hi all,

Here is the info for those attending the Comox gathering, 27 July to 29 July.

For those approaching from the South, head straight up the middle of Baynes Sound to Comox. Those approaching from the East or North, follow the 3 navigation buoys (red right returning) into Comox. Both approaches are very easy but watch out for the occasional crab trap float. No need to worry about water depths, there will be plenty, whatever time you arrive. There are several marina's in Comox, you want the right hand side, government dock. Enter between the stone breakwater and the wooden breakwater. Go past the green pontoon (tie up for big boats) leaving it to Stbd. Go to the right hand finger, "D" dock. Tie up on the inside of "D" dock. There is no tie up on the outside of "D" dock (closest to the beach) because it gets too shallow at low tides. The wharfinger is expecting the majority of you on Friday from mid day on. Latecomers may have to raft up if you want to stay with the CD crowd. The government dock phone number is 250-339-6041 or VHF 66A. Chart 3527. Cost is 97 cents per foot plus tax. Power $4 or $5 extra. At the office there is a complimentary kitchen with tables and chairs, microwave, and free coffee all day long. WiFi is also free. Hot showers are $1 for 3 minutes. Laundry is $2. These facilities are for dock patrons only.
For those of you who are anchoring out. On your approach after passing the 'Spit' you will see a lot of boats on mooring buoys to your right. This is your general anchoring area. You will also see 4 very large rusty can buoys. Draw an imaginary line from the Northern most can buoy (closest to the beach) to the wooden breakwater. Anchor along that line or anywhere South of it. If you anchor to far North of that line, you may dry out Sat morning. Another good place to anchor is close to the sandy beach. Holding is good in firm mud/sand. Low tide is Sat morning at 08:15 at 3.79 ft. So if you anchor Friday in about 25 ft, you will not dry out. Rowing the dink to the dock. Lots of tie up down the outside of "D" finger close to the exit.

Friday 5pm. "Meet & Greet" at the totem pole, marina park. 2 mins walk from the boats. Complimentary burgers and hot dogs, pop. Also no-host fish & chips. Collect your weekend info package.

Saturday daytime amuse yourselves, explore the town, go crabbing or fishing. Everything is close by. Saturday evening, pot luck supper, entertainment, guest speakers, games, and prizes.

Sunday morning cruise to Sandy Island about 20 mins South of Comox. Anchor in the bay. Explore the island followed by beach picnic. The end.

If any of you are arriving early, say the Wed or Thurs, please call me on my cell so that we can get together for a cold one.
I think I have covered all the main points, but if you think of anything else, please get in touch.

Nice job Martin! Looking forward to seeing everyone. We will be coming in from Powell River Thursday or Friday am depending on weather. Planning Desolation Sound earlier that week. Will be tied at gov't dock. Need anything let me know. George :thup

Martin
Thanks for the local info.
Would you sign us up for dock space at the Govt. Docks.
We are looking forward to the Comox CBTG

No problem Ian and Jackie, head for the dock.

The wharfinger would not take individual reservations (unless your boat is exceptionally large), he said they have been burnt in the past with 'no shows'. When I posted saying if you want to tie up, PM me, 8 did. This left 18 (by default) anchoring out. I knew more than 8 would eventually want to tie up, so I told the wharfinger to expect 15 or so at the dock. So if anyone changes their mind and decides to dock instead of anchor, go ahead and tie up (inside of D finger). If space runs out, rafting up is allowed, or if you don't want to be intimate, there will be other spaces on other fingers I'm sure.

Martin.

hey martin, we will be at the dock as well. i also went and talked to the wharfinger and said the same to me. he felt there would be lots of room for all of us.

June 10 to 22, 2012 Jan and Dan and the 16 foot Angler took the Ferry from Port Angeles WA to Victoria BC, stopped at Nanaimo for a couple of nights. We discouvered a small Cafe called 2 Chefs Affair, 123B Commercial Street. Graet Food, fun place. If you are in that part of the world don't pass it up. We headed north to Comox and met with Martin and Andrea. They are excited about the C Brat Gathering. We were the test mini boat for the cruise Matin has planned. We went to Campbell River then over to Ucluelet (Pacific side of Vancouver Island) to fish.

Martin,

Tom and I will be bringing the C-brats box of paper plates, cups, silverware and napkins. we replenished it with a trip to costco so at this point I am sure we could seat 100people. You don;t need to buy that stuff.
