07/24 - 07/26 - Bellingham, WA CBGT

There's no hazing at CBGTs unless...one brings a boat named "PINGU" and is told that is the sound made when that "beer can boat" hits a rock   or...when one gets skunked while fishing, or loses at hearts, or docks by braille (twice in a row) to the cheers of the approving brats.

Seriously. There is no hazing at CBGTs. We're not that kind of group. You will be welcomed along with your new boat nee: "Bess-C". I'm not sure if the Rev Jim or the Rev Dave will be there but you might want to have her christened at the gathering in order to prevent Neptune or Davy Jones from becoming offended.

The crew of Capital Sea regret that work and life in general caused out upcoming Desolation sound trip to prevent our attendance at this great event.
We will be overnight in Bellingham on Thursday 7/23 and will be on the road first thing to make our reservation on the Tswwassen ferry the morning of Friday 7/24.
So here is our question : Will any of you be getting to Bellingham on Thursday? If so we would love to connect, enjoy some dock time and offer up some smoked sturgeon for your pot luck.

In any event, we wish all of you the best.

Unfortunately, I'll be unable to attend this premier event since I'll be manning our Fire/Rescue Boat during the Lake Stevens Aqua Fest from 0630 to 2300 HRS on Saturday...(with a very few hour break in the middle of the day).
Fortunately, for your sake, I won't be there so there will be less hazing... :wink .

Don't know if Rev. Jim will be there, but you should be sure to get your vessel christened, to ward off any unwanted voodoo.

I'm afraid Bess-C is no more.

Well I think I may actually make this one. Dotty, however is still 'iffy'. Anyway, today we went out and turned the motor off between Hat and Camano Islands. I acrually broke out the instruction book and figured out how to enter waypoints between there and Bellingham. After all that work, me squinting at the little Lowrance C-337. and Dotty dutrifully reading the numbers off the charts, least one of us will set off into the unknown on Friday.

Looks like we'll be able to make this one after all. Weather permitting, of course. Prep for our Broughton trip is going smoothly so far, freeing up some time.

It is now the day before we plan to head north and there hasn't been any sign of a reason not to go. We're way ahead of the last two years, that's for sure.

Rough plan:

Arrive B'ham to launch Monday afternoon and stay there the first night. It'll be me, 12yo Jamie, her 14yo friend Erica, and my 10yo grandson Austin. Oh, and Sophie the 3yo mutt.

Head for one of our favorite small islands (Doe, James, Jones, ...) Tuesday morning and hope to find a spot at the dock.

Probably Friday Harbor Wednesday so the girls can do the girl shopping stuff and me and Austin can rest up.

Thursday to Deception Pass to see Les and the crew, with a visit to La Conner sometime during the day. If Dusty is reading, I hope he lets me treat him to breakfast Friday morning before we head back to B'ham.

Friday and Saturday at Ruth and Joe's big shindig - the premier event on the western C-Brat summer social calendar.

Sunday morning will probably be a trip over to Deer Harbor so the kids can find a swimming pool. Why in the world they would want to is beyond me, but for some reason the girls think that's important.

Monday we will either head back to the trailer at B'ham or go out to Matia or Sucia for one more night. If we're all still getting along and the groceries haven't run out, we might even stay until Wednesday.

Or, we do something completely different. The only certainty is seeing all the great friends at the B'ham CBGT. We also hope to run into as many of you who are out and about before and after.

One more day....

Mike,

Welcome news that you all will be up and around here for Bellingham. Patti and I will be in San Francisco and won't be at Bellingham so we'll miss you guys but sure will miss you. It's been too long. Take care.

We are partially packed and hope to head north early in the morning. It is very hot here and we are looking forward to cooler temps.

If all goes well we will be at the gathering. Hope to get to Bellingham by Wednesday.

Steve

For those of you who are out there on Fri., if you're interested you might want to hop into town to watch those of us running in the Ragnar Relay go past. The Ragnar relay is a 189 mile foot race from Blaine to Langley. Twelve people on each team run three legs of approximately 5 miles each. There are two vans/team each with 6 runners in it. The 6th runner in Van #1 has leg through Bellingham that enters from the N on 539, turns east on Illinois and then S. on Cornwall then east on Ohio. The exchange between van 1 and van 2 happens at the corner of Ohio and Franklin. I'm driving and running in van #2 so the closest I'll get to the marina is that I'll be on that corner.

If you're interested in learning more about this crazy race, the web site can be found at this link.

B'ham is nice nice. We got here about 1:00 no problems. The trailer brakes worked real good the one time I tried them out on my favorite stretch of freeway thru Seattle. Both me and the guy who stopped short in front of me were glad of that.

After launching I decided to go for an island spot. It was breezy in the bay like always and even windier in Rosario. Not knowing where or if we would find a dock (gotta have with the kids and dog), we headed back to B'ham for the night. Probly a good choice although the wind had stopped by the time we got back.

We got to say hi to El & Bill before they headed out for the night. That was cool.

They came down today and hung signs all along the dock saying it was reserved for C-Dorys this weekend. The young man who hung 'em said they always look forward to having us in July and look forward to seeing Ruth in January.

Out early in the morning to try for a spot at Doe Island. Bill says with the low tide series the tide pools will be great for my grandson Austin.

Mike & family,

Pleased that you made it through Seattle okay. That's not one of my favorite places to be with a boat & trailer (even if Joe is the one driving the vehicle).

Nice knowing that the B'Ham Harbor fellows have the reserved signs in place. They sure take good care of us Brats.

If we don't see you before you leave tomorrow morning, then we'll just look forward to seeing you when you get back to B'Ham.

Ruth (and Joe, too)

Marty - it is a well-kept secret that there IS land north of Coupeville! And here is a shocker for you - there is land north of Bellingham as well! So you are going to cruise up to Belllingham from Everett with Catman. Are you perchance going to explore the Gulf Islands and Nanaimo after Bellingham CBGT with Catman as well? Highly recommended!

If anyone is planning to travel up to Bellingham by boat on Friday 7/24 and passing Everett on the way, please let me know if Dotty and I can follow along on Lizzie. (We have heard that there is land north of Coupeville but have been hesitant to believe it as reliable sources insist that the world ends there.)

I was really worried that there might not be a keg available for B'ham, the brewery and Taproom are just going nuts right now (a good thing, as David and I can assure you). But rest easy - Rande the head brewer assured me there will be a keg set aside, but it will be flavor du jour (whatever is not getting shipped to the distributor or needed for the Amazon picnic (yes, the 3,500 Amazon.com home office folks will be drinking Snoqualmie beer - LOTS of it I hear - at their annual picnic at Mountain Meadows Farm).

Well Pat-The family has given me a two day pass to sail off alone on Friday with the promise to return on Saturday eve. It may not be circumnavigating the globe, but it's combination of "Marty's Big Adventure" and a Cinderella Liberty. I'd wear my dress blues but my waist has grown 10 inches since the last time. I look forward to seeing you and everybody.

Looks like another 16 will be at Bellingham. C-Run is at the motor doctor, and I am not sure when she will be ready to go. :( So, back up boat to the rescue! Should be in town in the am on Friday.

Ruth & Joe,

Unfortunately, Caryn and I are going to miss this one. Too bad because the weather should be spectacular. My dad is in town and we want to spend as much time with him as possible.

I'm sure it will be a great time for all. We'll miss y'all.

Still the only boat at Doe. Better come join us.

This is the first time I've been up here since I quit smoking a year and a half ago. Those island trails are kinda nice.

Simple solution for you, Peter. Bring Dad to Bellingham!
