I kind of expected to see at least one photo :photo of an Alaskan watermelon. Now I am beginning to think that the Alaskan watermelon is nothing but a myth. :thdown

It was a great time in Schoppe Bay with outstanding weather. The decadence award goes to Shiroz with Mark and his wife sitting on the roof of their 25 in lawn chairs. The grand prize watermelon award went to Dogon Dory who finally located two of the three watermelons. Coho got the other. I had to give some helpful hints, such as go to the Bayliner and turn right and for the final one, there were three boats all inside of shotgun range and finally Dan saw it. Being somewhat devious, I placed it on an old stump on the beach and everyone was looking in the water.

The wildlife also cooperated along with the weather. In 2 days we saw 8 bears around the lagoon. There was bear sign everywhere. We later saw 4 more bears in Olsen Bay on Sunday.

After the gathering we kept on going on to Valdez, met up with Dogon Dory in Sawmill Bay Sunday night, and ran into Sea Duck pulling a shrimp pot south of Sawmill on Monday. He and his wife brought in their first shrimp. Continued on to Naked Island for fishing and hiking and spent the night in Cabin Bay. Tuesday we ran over to the south end of Perry to visit the oyster farm and picked up 4 dozen oysters. Four days and 255 miles later we were back in Whittier.

What a great time. Thanks to all.

Thanks Tom for setting this up, it was nice to spend the evening with everyone. After 3 days of exploritory shrimping and coming up with a grand total of 30 shrimp we dropped 4 pots on a known area the last night and got 120. We stopped off the outside of glacier island and caught our halibut on the way in, all under 25 lbs. It was quite an obstacle course coming back through the narrows on Monday. There were 25 purse seiners and 6 tenders working the narrows. See you next year!

Beth and I just made it back to Fairbanks. Great time everyone! Thanks for taking the lead setting this up Tom. It was nice to meet and/or see everyone again. Yes, Dan is right that we caught the only halibut on Sunday, but only because Dan gave us some excellent GPS coordinates. We went right to Dan's spot, dropped a line down, and had a hook-up in under 30 seconds. (Got anymore tips Dan?) Sounds like we also need to get some shrimp pot coordinates from Bearbait. We're already looking forward to next year's adventure.

I just added some more pictures compliments of Caroline who took more pictures than I did and did a much better job. I agree with Dan on the location. I don't think it was much for fishing, but as a place to meet it was excellent.

Thanks to everyone who came for making it a lot of fun.

Thanks Guys for the great time in Schoppe Lagoon. Tom your hospitality was nothing but outstanding. Look forward to doing this again next year.
