With a few tips from Dogon Dory, I'll help organize (if that what its called) a gathering around July 4. Being a Tuesday, unless you intend to play hookey on Monday, Saturday the 1st looks like the best day. The two suggested locations are Olsen Bay in Unakwik or Schoppe Bay on the east side of Eaglek Bay. Olsen is about 36 miles from Valdez and Eaglek is 36 miles from Whittier. I've been to Schoppe and it has a really nice lagoon in the back where quite a few boats could anchor. I've never been to Olsen.

If Mike or Bill will set up a signup sheet, I would appreciate it.

Hey Tom, you're a stand up kind of guy. Cool, that you are going to lead the charge on this one. As the chief executive officer of the 2006 PWS event, does the precedent established by our 2005 CEO, DogOnDan still hold true, or am I going to have to make my own coffee?

As you can see, I am asking the important questions first!

Mark,

If my coffee making expert comes along, the answer is I will make the coffee. I am not sure what kind it will be, but we'll work that out when we get closer. I am hoping for a beach fire this time.

OK guys, you're already making me homesick! Won't make it up this summer, but plan to make the gathering in the near future. Guess I would be coming from the cabin and meet up with you at Whittier and use you as a guide Tom. Or, if visiting friends in Valdez, we could tag along with Dan or Mark. Been awhile since I was out in the sound, so will be prudent to use a guide.

Have a great trip and maybe this year will be one with dry sun instead of liquid sun :smiled !

Enjoy! Doug..........still without a boat

I'm good with Schoppe's, even if I have to make my own coffee. Thanks for the mileage Dan. Weather and ice is always a factor.

Committing to just "DRINKING" the coffee is a good first step, Dan, but I expect the "brewmeister" genes will assert themselves.

Doug,

Sorry you can't make it up this summer. Hope is still there although they have had some complaints about the smell from Augustine. They just got a reprieve from the Borough to keep the school.

Well, got my plant route stuff in order, and should wrap up in the MD/ southeast NJ area real close to making this...other than needing a week to get my boat from FL/AL or MD to the NW corner starting area. Going to post one more message to sell FreeByrd where she sits, like she is with all the new parts I have in the garage for $60K, as I have offered another individual. Point being... If I do not sell FreeByrd, I want to make a cruise in the area around this time, but might be a bit late. Unless of course during plant season I, or Marc down at Weflins sells my boat after getting her back to better than new shape, and I buy something new.... and get it to the travel area... Just saying I'd like to make this...but some things are a bit up in the air for a bit.

Byrdman

Byrdman,

We'd be glad to have you, but I think we are little farther north than you intended to go. However, you have just reminded me of something to ask Dan and Mark to do.

Dan or Mark, when you come through the ice floes coming off the Columbia Glacier, please pick up some ice for the JD.

Thank you Mike. By the way you or Bill are both invited. We need a guest speaker for the campfire session on Saturday Night. We will provide transportation from Anchorage.

Tom: Thanks for organizing this. Count us in, assuming the weather cooperates for those of us coming from the Valdez side. Mark and Dan we might have to have a rally of the Gary King inflatables.

Sounds like a winner, Ted. The "Alaska Series" inflatables will be pretty well represented.

What I'd like to know is, how's the fishing over in that area? Anybody on board that is familiar enough with the Schoppe Bay area to comment?

If any of you fellow CDory owners participating in the upcoming PWS gathering are interested, you are invited to stop by for a day or overnight at our place in Sheep Bay. Sheep Bay is located two bays SE from Valdez Arm, or 22 miles NW of Cordova. We have a floating dock capable of securing 3-4 CDories, and can provide temporary shore power for those needing it. It would be great to share experiences with other PWS cruisers/ fishing enthusiasts, and share the wonders of the area with other CDory owners.

Boris P.

Boris,

Thanks for the offer. It looks to be about 70 miles over to Sheep Bay from where we are meeting. If someone heads over there coming from the Whittier side, fuel may be a problem, at least it would for me. I'd have to head on to Cordova to pick up gas before heading back. But if the weather's good, I just might go for it.

Jim,

It will be good to see you all again. I don't know what I will have with me this time. At least two kayaks and probably my inflatable canoe.

Sounds like fun folks. Hope I can meet you out there. Schoppe is nice, though it can be a bit breezey. Lots of nice hideyholes though.
Cascade Bay is pretty cold at night, due to the mega waterfall, but Derickson is well-protected.
Eaglek is good for shrimp, but I can't comment on halibut. I'm beginning to think that there is a halibut conspiracy against me. Seems my brother in-law can catch one on C-Worthy, but none for me. I am also beginning to think that $4.99/lb. isn't so bad at New Sagaya...
Maybe you guys can help save me before I go down that slippery slope. Next thing I know I'll be buying blueberries. :crook

C-Worthy,

I haven't been too successful on halibut in PWS, but do pretty well out of Homer. June there is pretty nice as is July.

I've been to Eaglek once and liked the Schoppe Bay area the best due to the lagoon and relatively protected anchorage. We mainly kayaked in the area and that was excellent even if it rained for 4 days. I can't speak to the fishing though. I guess we can always experiment.

Hope you can make it. If you want to try Homer for halibut let me know.
