06/18 - 06/19 - Port Townsend Safety Launch

Great pix at that link from Kate, Michael and Joel.

Thanks for posting those and the link to that site. Looks like there may be more opportunities for some safety boat service if anyone else is interested.

Here are the comments of Steve Chapin, race organizer:

I want to thank you Dave for a job very well done. You made my job as Race Director easier by how smoothly the Safety Boat coverage ran. From my perspective it was seamless. You all dealt with situations as they arose, and the race moved on. I didn't have to do anything.
I also want to thank everyone in the C-Dory fleet -- Roger, Harvey, Dave, Chris & Randy, and Barry (did I miss anyone?). I don't have their contact info; could you pass this on to them?
And thanks to two others out on the water with you, Laingdon in Red Duck, the RIB, and to Mike and crew in the Sheriff's Patrol boat.
Thanks go to Libby on-shore at Pt Wilson and Josh up in the Pilot House at the NWMC, who made the critically important radio links happen so we all could communicate.
I heard that some of the boats had rowing club members who served as crew, giving the drivers a rower's perspective. I'm sure that helps a lot.
A number of racers had very appreciative remarks about your presence with them out there. The tide rips, fog, commercial and recreational vessel traffic all presented real open-water challenges, and your being there was very reassuring. Every racer I talked to after the finish was happy and excited. They were challenged by the conditions and were elated to have made it through the course and back to shore.
You probably weren't aware of the scene up in the Pilot House. There were a number of spectators watching the scene with binoculars and listening to the radio communication, following the action like it was a horse race. In spite of the fog along the Pt Wilson/Midchannel Bank leg of the course, you could pick out not only the Safety Boats but also the racers. Each radio transmission gave enough information to understand what was happening out there, miles away. The excitement was thrilling. People were running down to the docks to cheer the racers on as they closed in on the finish.
And as you said to me earlier, your jobs were made easier by the skill of the racers in dealing so well with the conditions out there. Because of their skill no rescues were necessary, which in those rips that would not be easy. So that's it: if everyone just does their job well, it makes it easier for everyone.
The support that the Safety Boats provided was essential to the great success of this race.

Gratefully,
Steve C

Two things.

I was asked this morning if we would accept some gas money for our safety boat services - divide up $200. I thought about it a moment and said I would put it to a vote. Whatever you participants decide, rules.

An option might be for us to donate it back to the race organization for future race funding. They run on a shoestring.

So, please privately send me an email- to 4NHAND@gmail.com - and tell me your preference. Majority will rule.

Other thing: you can see lots of race photos at www.soundrowers.org or at www.NAOWRC.worldpress.com. Select "photos" (who would have thought...). Some of the pictures by the official photographer, Joel Rogers, are very good.

200 divided by 7 equels =28. something divided by $3 a gallon = 9 gallons. out of the the 40 i burned that weekend.

let them keep it. 28 bucks is not going to break me and I eat 3 hot sausages, salmon, 2 waters, 3 kinds of salads, 4 cookies, 3 brownes, 4 types of potatos. Susan eat something too Iam sure. hell I might owe them money.

Dave,

I would vote for letting them keep the money too. It was too much fun. It they wanted to use it to make some sort of banners, markers, flags, or stand-up sign of sorts, that would indicate "Safety Boat" some such title, to make the boats look like they are part of the official function I would recommend that.

Hey, we got a free night at Point Hudson, and some of us got to eat :wink

Thank them for the kind offer.

I just returned from a couple of days "playing" on "Sea Shift" so am now in the process of catching up on the NUMEROUS posts that have occurred on C-Brats while I've been gone.

I'm with the rest of you. Thank the group for the offer and have them utilize the money in some other way. I had a fantastic time out on the race course, dined at a scrumtious salmon BBQ potluck and had an unexpected free nights stay at the Point Hudson Marina.

If that weren't enough, I got to hang out with my fellow C-Brat Dudes and Dudettes, christen a new Ranger Tug and explore new cruising territory (Mystery Bay).

As Bob Hope used to sing .... :note ...."Thanks for the Memories".... :note

Thanks all! It's a great idea to have some form of identification for the safety boats. I will pass that on.

Talking with Steve yesterday we came on the idea of possible C Brat safety boats elsewhere in the country. I wouldn't be surprised if the fine New England Brats might step up next year - Rhode Island, I think.

Dave,

From looking at a schedule for the rowing activities, there may be some other opportunities here in the PNW as well. Just thinking here.
