Here are the comments of Steve Chapin, race organizer:
I want to thank you Dave for a job very well done. You made my job as Race Director easier by how smoothly the Safety Boat coverage ran. From my perspective it was seamless. You all dealt with situations as they arose, and the race moved on. I didn't have to do anything.
I also want to thank everyone in the C-Dory fleet -- Roger, Harvey, Dave, Chris & Randy, and Barry (did I miss anyone?). I don't have their contact info; could you pass this on to them?
And thanks to two others out on the water with you, Laingdon in Red Duck, the RIB, and to Mike and crew in the Sheriff's Patrol boat.
Thanks go to Libby on-shore at Pt Wilson and Josh up in the Pilot House at the NWMC, who made the critically important radio links happen so we all could communicate.
I heard that some of the boats had rowing club members who served as crew, giving the drivers a rower's perspective. I'm sure that helps a lot.
A number of racers had very appreciative remarks about your presence with them out there. The tide rips, fog, commercial and recreational vessel traffic all presented real open-water challenges, and your being there was very reassuring. Every racer I talked to after the finish was happy and excited. They were challenged by the conditions and were elated to have made it through the course and back to shore.
You probably weren't aware of the scene up in the Pilot House. There were a number of spectators watching the scene with binoculars and listening to the radio communication, following the action like it was a horse race. In spite of the fog along the Pt Wilson/Midchannel Bank leg of the course, you could pick out not only the Safety Boats but also the racers. Each radio transmission gave enough information to understand what was happening out there, miles away. The excitement was thrilling. People were running down to the docks to cheer the racers on as they closed in on the finish.
And as you said to me earlier, your jobs were made easier by the skill of the racers in dealing so well with the conditions out there. Because of their skill no rescues were necessary, which in those rips that would not be easy. So that's it: if everyone just does their job well, it makes it easier for everyone.
The support that the Safety Boats provided was essential to the great success of this race.
Gratefully,
Steve C
