06/10 Departure - WA to ALASKA

Pat-n-Patty: Thanks for sharing the GOOD NEWS about Lydia graduating in Jun. Sherryl was telling me that "most institutions" are now using a 6 year tracking for their graduation percentages... and those percentages range from a small 30% to around 60% depending on if it is a "traditional" or non-traditional college. Point being...she is graduating.

Does not look like I will make it to the NW area until about 10Jul timeframe. I start Monday with Bonnie Plant Farm and "the season" does not end until end of month Jun... and it will take me about a good week to cross back up and over with my boat from Alabama..... and Mr. Fisherman has lured me into a tuna trip once I make Oregon coast. Sherryl will not be able to join me for a 2 week trip either as we planned due to Auburn University Montgomery having all their orientations during the Jul/Aug timeframe.... and possibly only a one week trip...... So... I am really going to have to take a hard look at the trip for sure. Not sure how many other family members of mine will want to and be able to join me for some time in Alaska.... Guess it is all up in the air for now....

Ok, well, then, Tyboo - please change this to "Washington to 100 Miles North of Prince Rupert, B.C." or something - we HAVE to keep Dan happy!

You guys are really stretching it calling this a trip to Alaska. You ought to at least have to come half way to the first road connected to the rest of the state. Then again the state capital isn't connected by road :embarrased .

There is now an event sign up here for this cruise. So far, Daydream and Anna Leigh are signed up. We'd LOVE some company, if you can take the whole month, or take two weeks and find a boat buddy to bring your boat back, or want to BE somebody's boat buddy to bring THEIR boat back, then this is the place to figure it all out!!

Dan --
Most Alaskans we know proudly consider the Alaska Marine Highway to be a road, whether they live on that 'road' or not -- and doesn't that highway receive federal highway funding? So doesn't that 'road' to Alaska begin at Bellingham? And aren't there more miles of C-Dory navigable water in Southeast (with all the islands to circumnavigate and channels to explore) than all the rest of your giant state?

Pat --
Sounds like a great 'share the boat' idea you have put together. We are watching your thread to see if others (perhaps on the East Coast or mid-continent) want to take up the idea of bringing another's boat back down from the north.

Well, you know Otter Tom was all ready to do this until other commitments got in the way...we owe Tom & Kathy big time as you know! It is just such a great idea, I'm hoping it will catch on! We'll just have to see here...

Guys-

Back when El and Bill were thing of doing this, I suggested that they trail to Prince Rupert, launch and cross the Dixon Entrance (90 miles) and then go from there up to Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, and "whistle stops" in between.

This avoids most of the open ocean exposure such as the Queen Charlotte Sound and the large water of the Georga Strait, and gets you to some really great places w/o putting in so much time just traveling. Have you thought about this approach? Joe.

What, and miss all the great stuff from Blaine, WA, north? No way! Its about the journey!

Pat-

If one had the time, it certainly would be best to do the whole show from Puget Sound to Juneau or Skagway.

What I was suggesting is to trade off the BC. tour for the S.E. Alaska one for those with limited time.

Joe.

Patty here. You see, this is exactly why wifey isn't doing week one. It's NOT about the journey for me, it's the destination. Eight and ten hour days motoring in the boat don't interest me at all. I like the sundowners, meals, sleeping, and swinging on the hook once I'm there! I want to see a glacier!!

If you're interested in the destination, here are three places to travel up there:

1. Behm Canal out of Ketchican. Thats a several day trip, worth every minuet.

2. Wrangell Narrows. This should be fun on a powerboat, it was interesting in a sailboat, with 4 knot currents and a big tug. By the way, it goes to Petersburg, not Wrangell.

3. Tracy Arm, there's a thrill when you get to the ice.

And watch out for the whales in Stephens Passage, you saw what they can do off Santa Barbara.

Boris

Patty --
If you want to see a glacier up close and personal (namely, a glacier that caves into the salt water), you'll need to be north of Ketchikan -- Like Boris said, Tracy Arm is great! On the BC coast you will see glaciers up high and distant.
