06/03 - 06/05 Eastern Shore, Maryland gathering

Robbi,

You, and your twin, would be very welcome. Please try to come. You could be the "official representative of the left coast gang"...what an honor!

We can certainly find a place for you to "camp" with all these boats..(we hope) coming.

First of all a big thankyou for your Halcyon site which fills the hours
on winter days like this one. Our place ( owned by my brother and
I ) is a shore place not a residence, but nice and clean with a workable
kitchen. If the weather is good, the best part is a nice large front yard with no close neighbors, and decent shade. A few folding chairs and we're good to go. Its about a mile from Langford Marina, a really nice family style place. Will be nice to finally get to see some of you after all these cyber hours and learn more about your experiences. Thanks for the
invitation to see your boat and ask a few questions. I'm not mechanical
and its the simplicity of the boat that attracts me. Sounds fun!

Just about to leave the house for BWI airport and got news from Doug and Anne that they have been able to secure facilities at Langford Bay Marina for us...this is a great place, just off the Chester River, protected, slips, pool, pavilion, a "harbor" area also for anchoring. And it is just a short hop to Crab Cake Steve's place, and another hop to Cacaway Island, a famed rafting up place..so we have lucked out. I will be talking to the manager about details of cost for slips etc early next week and let you know. I really think this is a perfect place for us.

As my wife will tell you, about now i start worrying about weather...just the way i am.

Just signed up, be there one way or another. Trailer or Bay. Hard to envision from DownEast Maine, a NorEaster and 20" of snow expected here over the next two days. Looking forward to it.

El and Bill, you asked about crab cake recipes. I’m surprised nobody jumped in – you can usually get some pretty good arguments going about who’s recipe is best. I learned long ago never to choose between my wife’s crab cakes or my mother’s – all I’ll say is that I could easily live on either one!

Here’s the recipe we use, roughly…ingredients are added and mixed more by feel than by measure, but these are reasonable estimates.

Start with a pound of crab meat, which should make about 6 crab cakes, depending on how big you like them. Use jumbo lump, the best you can find – quality of the meat makes a BIG difference. You’ll also need: 1 egg; 2 tablespoons to a cup of mayonnaise; 1 teaspoon of dry mustard, or a tablespoon of jar mustard; 1 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning ( a local specialty – you can get it on your visit!); 2 teaspoons or a tablespoon of Worcestershire; salt; ½ teaspoon of pepper. Some folks also add a dash of Tabasco, although we don’t.

Bread crumbs are optional – we don’t use them unless we have to, and then only sparingly – sometimes helpful as a binder if you have lower quality crab meat, but if overdone it really detracts from the taste. Some folks recommend crushed saltines.

Pick through the crab meat – gently – to remove any shell and cartilage. Idea is to keep the lumps big and intact, not shred them. In a separate bowl, mix the batter, including mayo, egg, spices. When mixed, pour it over the crab meat. Toss gently to mix, again avoiding breaking up the lumps – just kind of fold the meat into the batter. Then gently form them into cakes. But be gentle and don’t press them too hard.

Because this recipe doesn’t use much in the way of additives, the resulting cakes can be a little hard to handle – refrigerating for an hour or more before cooking firms them up and makes them easier to handle (placing them on waxed paper also helps). To cook, you can sautee, fry or broil (my favorite). To sautee, use olive oil or clarified butter – make the cakes thinner so they’ll cook through, and they’ll take about 4 minutes per side (they should look golden brown when done). To pan fry, use about a half inch of oil. To broil, brush the cakes with a little melted butter, then place them about 3 inches from the heat in a preheated broiler. They take about 8-10 minutes per side I guess, but best to go by color.

For serving, my take is avoid sauces, maybe just use some fresh lemon.

Crab cakes are great, but they disappear pretty fast. For a longer social event, the Chesapeake crab feast is the way to go – steamed crabs, which you pick yourself, with plenty of beer. Tom assures us that we’ll work a crab feast into this June get together, so get ready to pick!

Here are a couple of recipes on the web, although they all rely too much on bread crumbs in my opinion:

Sorry for the long post, but I do love to eat crabs...

Hello to Everyone.

I just saw this forum after being away from this site for some time. What a great gathering you have planned. Count us in. We will probably come down on June 3rd, and stay for the week. I cruised that area on a sailboat years ago and have been longing to return. This makes it easy.

We'd be happy to stay the weeekend at any marina or club that you suggest, and then depart for some quiet gunkholes on Monday. We have friends that sail out of the Galesville area, so may try to visit with them.

Let me know what I can do to help. Oh boy...hot steamed crabs!

Yeah, ditto for us, we have a wedding in Long Island on June 12, so the idea of coming is tantalizing, but we are wrestling with how to cope with logistics (assuming I can figure out how to take the week of the 6th through teh 10th off anyway), wedding clothes, cruising clothes, sleeping bags (??), transportation, lodgings, and a host of other challenges...

This trip is on my back burner simmering away. Don't know if it will come to a rolling boil, but it is fun to dream. :smilep Robbi

Pat,
Suggest you box up all your wedding duds and express mail them to the hotel or a Long Island friend. Then just fly into Washington National with your boating togs and hire a rental car for the trip to the eastern shore (or come with one of us from the area). When its time to go to the wedding, there are shuttle flights from National to LaGuardia practically every half hour. You will have a very good shot at winning the long distance award!
Cheers,

Sounds like a great time. I have written it in my calendar and I will try and keep it open. I plan to cruise up the bay from Portsmouth on Friday morning and should be in port Friday evening.

Hello all,

Back from Iowa (where my daughter set two Mid West Conference records in swimming...100 back and 200 back. Proud parents.

So, this gathering is getting up steam. I haven't yet checked the event signup site, but i'd guess we have at least 15 boats with interest...

I will be going over to Lankford Bay Marina today to check out the arrangements. I can tell you that it is a lovely place, just off the ChesterRiver, on Langford Creek. There is a swimming pool, a nice pavilion, nice views, restrooms. They assure me that they can accommodate us.

Thanks to the Seidel's for the crab cake recipe. John is right that to make crab cakes for a crowd is (unfortunately) now an almost prohibitive cost issue..but we will work it out. And , if crabs are running, we will steamed crabs, dumpled on a table covered with newspaper, crab knives for picking (please, hammers are discouraged on the EasternShore), lots of Old Bay Seasoning, and of course...beer.

The dates are official...Arrival June 3, through Sunday, June5.

I am hoping the El and Bill will talk to us about their travels. Other than that, there are no set plans...yet. Chime in on what you think you'd like to do. Chestertown, just 12miles up the river , is a great place to visit. And Rock Hall harbor is just about an hour away...with the famed Waterman's Crab House. And there are endless coves, creeks, beaches to poke into.

Early June here can be either very warm, or on the cool side. We'll hope for thebest.

More later.

That is an absolutely GREAT idea, thanks, I will pass it on to Patty.

One of the great things about C-Dorys: you never have to set a rain date for your cruising!

For once I've contributed something to the family calendar months in advance (my wife is the far better planner in this duo) and asked Kathy to block off the weekend of June 3. Without even glancing at the calendar, she said, "Oh, dear -- that's a tough weekend." Something about a Brownie campout and some other event. There will be further discussion and we will try to work it out.

However, in the horrific event that we cannot be present for the whole event, I would like to offer to the out-of-region C-Brats who are thinking about coming the possibility of borrowing the Otter for the weekend. It would be doing me a favor, as Otter would become sulky and depressed if she missed a gathering of her sisters and cousins taking place so nearby. I would only limit the offer to those who are current owners and have boating experience on C-Dorys. So Pat, Roberta, etc., think about the possibility of a guest cruise and send me an email at callahant@state.gov or a private message if this might tip the balance for your plans. If you have the time, you could cruise all the way down the Potomac, about 90 miles from Alexandria, and up the Bay to the gathering, and I could probably meet up with you there on Saturday evening or Sunday with the van and trailer for the return (or vice versa).

Regards,

OK, hope I'm not jumping the gun here, but was wondering where a good place to launch the boat would be. We'll be coming from Ohio and I'd prefer to launch on the west side of the bay (Baltimore area or south of there) and cruise across the bay for the gathering. Will want to be sure it's a safe place for the truck and trailer for the few days and that I can bring my dogs with me at the launch. Any recommendations are appreciated.

From terraplane

I'm sure others will suggest ideas. One possible place might be Cutter Marine, which is just across the Bay from us..about an hour and half cruise i'd guess. They are in Middle River. Since they supply all the boats around here and are the main dealer, they might be willing. Their place is very secure.

Ruthie is the person to talk to...tell her you are coming to the gathering.
The telephone is 410 391 7245 Fax is 410 391 1829

Tom, I think Ruthie and her husband may join us on their boat too. I told them about the trip last week. AS for a boat ramp on the western side and since these folks are coming from Ohio, how about SandyPoint. Rt 50 and The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Might be easier

Agree about launching spot.

It would be GREAT if Ruthie and spouse would join us. They have been influential in a lot of the sales/satisfaction of the group. And since they are the "national boat best" it would be good to honor them with....let's see...they give us a discount on any future sales we can generate at this gathering...maybe upgrades on things? Maybe filets at the Cutter cookout facilities? Maybe a new 25 for Halcyon? Seriously, it would be great to have them. Ruthie is a saint(ess) for putting up with all of our requests for this and that.

This gets more and more interesting. If you live here, you see that we have so many opporutnities. On Saturday imagine: some will relax at the marina; some will go to Conquest Beach and swim, anchor , talk; some will go to Chestertown for lunch and a tour of Maryland's first capitol city; some will go to Rock Hall for beer , crabs, and a local waterman's community; and some will go across the Bay to the Patabsco River, and the solemn spot wher the Star Spangled Banner was conceived...just a bit before Ft. McHenry and Baltimore harbor. And all of these side trips are within 2 hours of Lankford Bay Marina!!

We are going to convene our local people to talk about all this and will keep you informed of choices, etc.

I haven't had as much fun since Clinton whipped the impeachment boys.(oooppps. I'm not supposed to be political..boats are not political...except, certain sailboats, as we know...ooops again)

It would be hard to beat Sandy Point State Park as a place to launch, especially if you are not familiar with the area. Easily accessible, great ramps, plenty of parking, and located on the western shore just (a few feet, as a matter of actual fact) north of the Bay Bridge, which is a landmark hard to miss. That has become Snowdon's standard launch and retrieve site when I have to pull her out for service. Also, it puts you close to good fishing, Baltimore, Annapolis, and the entrance to the Chester River area. Hard to go wrong. Enjoy your trip east. Bruce Holly
