06/03 - 06/05 Eastern Shore, Maryland gathering

Tom --
It is possible to cruise from Chesapeake to Erie Canal -- thru the C&O, down Delaware Bay, then a delightful cruise (sneak) along the NJersey shore (including Barnegat Bay), out into the ocean for a short run around the Point, under the Big Bridge, past Lady Liberty and the skyline of NCY (up thru Hell Gate and circumnavigate Manhattan, if you wish), then up the Hudson past the Palisades, and when you reach Troy, take a hard right turn, up the flight of locks, and into the canal. Are you on??

Steinbeck said something like, "God made hobos, to make other men yearn."

Ell and Bill:

Your last post decribes a beautiful trip. I did the same except for the C&D Canal on my sailboat. Unfortunately, March of 1989 was a very rainy one and both the Hudson and Canal were full of flotsam. One day I had to change shear pins four times on my outboard.

They closed the Canal for three days, a first, and I was tied up to the wall at Troy for that period of time. It was hard to sleep due to all of the junk hitting the hull. I was afraid I would lose my rudder.

Seeing the Statue of Liberty was tremendous, knowing that my grandparents had seen the same thing on a far different boat a long time ago.

Also. rounding a bend to see West Point was a sight, as were the armories on islands in the Hudson and the mansions/private schools towering on the hillsides. I almost thought I would see Rip Van Winkle come walking down the bank.

Tom,
Don't sweat the incorrect name in your post. I don't take things all that seriously. Although, if you get to meet our one Schnauzer, you'll understand where the name comes from.

Favorite bumper sticker is " There is No Life West of The Eastern Shore"

Can I order a "Favorite bumper sticker is " There is No Life East of The Cascades" ??? Believe me, there is not much life in eastern Washington. I lived in Gaithersburg for two years (NW of the Eastern Shore). Main problem with the Eastern Shore, the sun is supposed to set on the ocean, not rise!!

You guys settle on a date yet for the East Coast, Maryland gathering? It is on the event list now, and will get a calendar entry and signup list when the dates are set.

Nick --
Thanks for the remembrances of your trip north -- truly a memorable one. Too bad about the rains and junk in Erie Canal. How about a run in a C-Dory this time?

We'd like to join the crowd on the Chester. The earlier in May or June the better for us. By then, I may have shirked real work to return to being a mate on "Sigsbee", a skipjack out of Baltimore, but early in the season, I think I still own my weekends. We'd enjoy bringing "Snowdon" up the Chester from Annapolis, and especially, crossing paths with "Lizzie Ann"--we have news about our own resident archaeologist--she's getting married. Till then--Bruce Holly

Hey Bruce -

I might just be the only guy on here who had never heard of a skipjack, so I Googled it. Is this the one? If so, it fits right into the teacher talk that this thread has rightfully seen fit to include.

Thanks!

Tyboo Mike

I'm working on the final decisions on the place and the dates. I might have that by Wednesday. I go away to visit my daughter in college (Grinnell, Iowa,) for five days, back on Sunday..I'll make it all final then if not before.

You comin?

Bruce,

Glad you are coming..I'll be in touch on this thread as soon as i have a firm place and date..We could be up to as many as 15 boats..what a great time that would be...and at least nine dogs...don't know how many kids.

El and Bill:

Sounds good to me, but not this time around. Once again, heading to Africa for two weeks in July for a safari; the real kind, where cameras come out after the guns.

Actually, what I would love to do is reprise part of Spirit's cruise on Valkyrie, our C Dory. It would be great to go from Lake Erie to my in-laws in Beaufort, SC and trailer home from there. Even cruising as 12-18 would seem like a commercial flight after sailing, motoring or motorsailing from dawn to dusk.

OK, It seems that June 3,4,5 is shaping up to be the best choice...not for everyone, but that seems to be as close to some consensus as we can get.

I'm still working with two places for the event. I'llget back with that information as soon as I can.

Since I never have done one of these, please let me know how important are things like showers and bathrooms, and other amenities. For instance, one place can take us for one of the nights, but not two, thus raising the question: would anchoring out in a small cove be accetablel, off a beach.

Anyway, i'll let you know more as I learn it.

OK then - The dates have been entered on the Calendar, and the signup list is ready.

You guys are good to go, and you will have good going! What a trip this is shaping up to be. How many trailer miles from the Pacific to the Atlantic??

Tom --
To answer your request:

We sure don't need a shower every day. In fact, is the Chesapeake swimmable in June?

The boat riding on anchor off a sheltered beach (or bow into the sand), a gang of good folks around a bonfire ashore, beer in hand, stars 'atwinkling overhead, pooches curled up near the fire, kid's eyes glazing over, a little music from you, ... what could be better??

Yep, that's the one. I took the job today. Can you believe it, they pay you to sail around the Chesapeake Bay. Not much, but enough to stave off most of the clowns. Who says there's no heaven. Now, in the interests of accuracy--I'm a social worker by trade, but aboard, I'm just a curmudgeon, resident grump, and general flunkie when I'm not prying oysters out of dredges, trawl nets, and scuppers, along with crabs and old tires. So, I don't think that counts as teaching does it? I do explain what I'm doing as I doo it, though. Chestertown, Reedville, Tangier Island, St. Michaels, Wye Island, Rock Hall--here we come. If you see us, C-people, hail us. We'll be watching you, because your boats are beautiful.
And Tyboo--if you're ever in Port Townsend, say hey to our son, Blaise. He's the owner of the black-hulled Egret sharpie (Google it--they're a beautiful design, and he built this one) in the town harbor, and one of the Freyja Boatworks boys. Alternatively, say hey to him at Halibut Cove, off Homer, Alaska during the summers. See, we have connections to God's Country West, too. Bruce Holly.

OK, Tyboo Mike has set up a place to register...at event signups. Be patient with me, cause i really am a total dumbo on these machines. So, i guess you go there to confirm you are planning to come. I will ask Tyboo whether I continue to write here, or switch to the event signup list for communication.

I'll be away for five days..hope to see a list of 12 to 14 on return.

Steve (Crab Cake) --

What a nice offer to perhaps have some social activity at your house. Is this your residence or a 'shore house?' We might have some out-of-town C-Dory folks coming to the Gathering, who will probably be 'camping' with us, but they might enjoy visiting ashore.

And, of course, you folks would be more than welcome to visit with us on Halcyon and kick around the boat to see how such a boat might fit into your boating future. You should figure yourself (and family) as a part of the Gathering and we would be glad to act as a 'ferry' to take you and family out to any 'beach parties' that might evolve.

Welcome to the clan!

This sounds sooooo good. I am giving some serious thought to coming out to Maryland (boatless) and getting in on this. My identical twin (yes, there is one more just like me-gasp) lives in "Balmer" and teaches middle school up on the bay near Aberdeen. I would love to visit her, and then take her to a gathering of C-Dories. She loves the water as much as I, but she has not spent very much time on the water since she has moved east. Water taxis don't count. I went out last fall and traveled around the bay a bit, but there is so much to see. We did visit with the Living Classrooms Foundation folks and saw one of their beautiful skipjacks (can't remember if it was the Sigsbee or the Minnie V) at their dock. What a wonderful program. That's my kind of teaching. Bruce, you lucky guy!
This trip is on my back burner simmering away. Don't know if it will come to a rolling boil, but it is fun to dream. :smilep Robbi
