Schedule looks good and we are planning to join you somewhere along the Carolina Loop, as we will be travelling by water from New Bern.

Elizabeth City has a good web site and
Susan in their Visitor Center, can provide additional information. (252-335-5330)

You can see from their Events Schedule that May 21 is their famous and fun Potato Festival.
The harbor web cam shows the free Marina's Wharf slips and bulk head viewed from Groupers Waterfront Restaurant, where in the summer there are tables and chairs sitting on the wood planking.

To the right is Waterfront Park with its bulkhead that also allows free tie up.

It should be a fun evening in Elizabeth city.

Charlie,

I am a little concerned on Albemarle Sound. We have about 5 miles on it and depending on wind I suspect it might be nasty, but if we go slow we should be able to punch through. My real concern is fog. Early in the season this might be a problem and without radar I would not want to make that leg until it clears.

Are you going to attend the Chesapeake gathering this year? I hope we have a good turn-out this year, the Chester River and surrounding area is a super place to cruise and relax.

Richard

Richard, don't know about Langford yet, probably not. Have changed jobs this year and the boat is presently OOC (T/T systems on both engines) but hope to get it fixed and back into the water by mid April or so.

Wouldn't worry about fog too much, a good current GPS chip should get you through, there's not much, if any, traffic across that leg. Bet one of the boats with you WILL have radar too, just stay together!

Our plans, at this point, are to arrive at the Centerville Waterway Marina on 5/19 and spend the night there. Hope to see you and any others that are planning the same there.

Rich

I was planning on spending Thurs night in dowtown Portsmouth, its free and there are lots of eateries in walking distance. If lots of others go to the marina, I will join for the party's sake.

Don't forget to sign up under the events tab especially if you are interested in a cruise T shirt. I am using that as an eyeball estimate to see if we can do it economically. See the pattern back in the discussion or in my album. Trying to keep the cost to about $15-$17.

Steve, great to have you planning to make the trip. Any ideas you may have for our planning are appreciated.

Rich, that is my plan also. I expect to arrive mid afternoon at Centerville Waterway Marina to get setup and be ready to depart at a reasonable hour on 5/20.

Richard

At this time my wife and i are planning to join the group for the trip. We will trailer to Centerville Waterway Marina on Thurs. 5/19, spend the night there and be ready for Friday departure. Sounds like a great trip and a first of this type for us. As the time gets closer I am sure I will have questions. We would like 2 T-shirts also.
Ron

Hello All,

This sounds like a great cruise in an area that we have not yet experienced. Right now, we are planning to make this gathering and hope to hook up with the Cowans who live in Athens, Al not far from us on the Tennessee River. We will be watching for any updates and look forward to this great trip.

Best Regards,
Richard, Cheryle and Chester aboard C Eagle.

Ernie and I will trailer Munchkin to Centerville Waterway Marina on 5/19, spend the night and be ready to cruise on 5/20. We are really excited about this trip. We went to the Fla. Keys in Jan and had such a great time, but since our return home the weather has kept us close to home. We also want two tee shirts.

Planning Update

I talked with the folks at Centerville Waterway Marina again yesterday and let them know that several of us would be utilizing their facilities for our trip start and finish. I spoke with Ann Hubbard, one of the owners, and she requested that one of us coordinate the reservations and call them by the end of March with our request.

I would be happy to coordinate the reservations for the group. What I will need is the following:

1. date of arrival at the CW Marina
2. dates you would need a slip at the CW Marina
3. dates you will need to store your rig
4. if staying in a slip, size of boat and electric requirements

Please let me know this information by March 28th.

Thanks, Richard

On saturday ,we went to the route and took pictures. Some spots were ok ,and others ?. I did take some pictures , so everyone has an idea. The welcom center does not have showers. From what my wife and i saw, we will be sleeping on the boat. There also is not very many places to eat. We bought a map book from West marine at Washington N.C.. The name is GMCO,s Waterproof Chartbook of North Carolina From BACK BAY VA. to LITTLE RIVER S.C. Price is 44.99.The pages we will use is 1,2,4,7,ande 8. I thought it was well worth the trip and the money for the chart book . Check out the pictures HunkeyDory :) albulm

Don't worry about a lack of restaurants along the way. Alma's Only is set up well for cooking, and will have a cooktop and grill available. If you want to dine on board but haven't done so or are reluctant, just bring your food and paper/plastic utensels, and you'll be set to go. For frozen food, or prepared meals, just throw the frozen items in the bottom of a cooler, add dry ice if available, regular ice in zip lock bags otherwise, add a layer of newspaper or a bath towel, then put refrigerator items on top with ice for drinks in zip lock plastic bags. Feel free to bring eggs, sausage (no bacon), hot dogs, hamburgers, prepared meals, and whatever else suits your fancy.

If you want to do this, just give me a call or pm so I can be sure to have whatever else is needed to make your meals enjoyable. I cook for the Coast Guard, so doing a little cooking for anyone in this group really wouldn't be an imposition.

We will be spending the first night at anchor in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area (anyone's welcome there, if you want to check out the battleship Wisconson, or other attractions), and will join the main group either at the North Dismal Lock, or at the rest area, depending on which lock opening is used.

Looking forward to "looping" with you all.

Neal, thanks for the pictures. If you look at the "Cruise the Carolina Loop" brochure at discoverelizabethcity.com, it identifies 15 restaurant in Elizabeth City within walking distance of the docks. Also there will be a potato festival in progress when we arrive on Saturday which will also have food. At Coinjock there are 2 restaurants and I have talked to Coinjock Marina & Restaurant and they will be open on Sunday. Looking forward to seeing you in May.

Richard

As we get closer, I need to tighten up the t-shirt idea if we are too place an order and get them in time. I have some o'seas travel between now and then, so I would like to see if this is feasible or not. Here is what I have for numbers now. So far no one has given me sizes. I only have 11 shirts, we need at least 20, preferable a few more to make it viable. We have 12 boats signed up so lets see what we can do!

Boat Name..........................Total Qty
Litl Tug......................................1
Hunkey Dory.............................2
Sea Esta...................................2
Munchkin..................................2
Annalee....................................2
elk tenn....................................2

We would like two t-shirts. Sizes, one large, one 3x. Thanks :) We are also looking forward to this trip. It will be our first long distantance cruise.

Please order both of my t-shirts large.
Thanks Ron P.S. If you are short of the required 20 order when you have to order please PM me and I probably can get grandkids something to sleep in.
