05/18 - 05/20 - 2018 Friday Harbor CBGT

Hi everyone!
Harald's wife, Heather, here. :) We are T minus 5 days from leaving on our first major overnight trip. We're both excited and nervous...as you can see from my husband's posts about docking. ;) I'm sure we'll do just fine (he exaggerates a little) and I'm so thankful to Gary and Colleen who will be leading the way from Cornet Bay. This group is amazing!

I have a few questions about what we'll be doing there and how much I should plan meals on the boat. I see there's a Friday dinner out and a Potluck on Saturday. Is it typical to eat out more, or to do meals on the boat? Just need to know how much food to pack for the days we're at Friday Harbor. I'm assuming there will be markets near by if we need to pick something up too. Since we're heading out Thursday morning (launching Wednesday night) that's a lot of food to carry, so want to be as efficient as possible.

Boat Naming question. We have somewhat 'officially' named our boat... we did finally put the name stickers on. But we've had no ceremony or bow breaking and I hear that's incredibly bad luck! So, if you can let me know what we need to bring for the naming on Saturday evening, that'd be great! Would love to share this moment with the Brats, who're the reason we started this whole C-Dory adventure.

Hi Heather. We're happy you and Harald have joined the C-Brats family!

The planned meals are Friday dinner at a restaurant if you'd like to come along, Saturday morning coffee/tea/juice and pastries on the dock if you'd like, and Saturday evening potluck. Other than that you are in your own for meals. There are many restaurant choices within walking distance of the Friday Harbor Marina as well as a grocery store (Kings Market). Many of us choose to eat on our boats, but it is completely up to you.

Regarding the naming ceremony, please send us a private message with your names (including last name) and your boat name. Then just be sure to have some greenery (a small branch from a tree works) on your boat for the ceremony which will be immediately after the potluck. You will also need your drink of choice in hand. :-)

We are happy to have you join us down at the docks/nearby for any/all of our planned events:
--5pm Friday, dinner at Cask and Schooner (we don't have a reservation, so we'll just be grabbing as many tables near each other as possible).

--7-9am Saturday, coffee, tea, hot cocoa and baked goods on the activity float on breakwater A at the end of H dock.

--5:30pm Saturday, potluck on breakwater A at the end of H dock.

Many of us will be around the docks all weekend, so please come by and stick around as long as you'd like.

Caryn and I are still planning on making the gathering. That is if you won't mind a Ranger Tug 23 crashing the C-Dory party. My new job might dictate that I work a half day on Friday so we might sneak in Friday evening. We're coming up from Edmonds.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone. It's been awhile.
 
Peter, I'm delighted to hear you and Caryn are going to join us! I was hoping you would. And I really don't think anyone will mind if you arrive dressed in red. Should be a smooth cruise up from Edmonds.

Heather, I think you and Harald will find that it's not necessary to pack an abundant food supply. This won't be like future trips whereby you'll cruise alone for a week or so. As Cindie outlined, Friday and Saturday's dinner is a community affair, and King's Market is three blocks away and very well stocked. But as she added, many of us snack and lunch aboard, so bring appropriate munchies because there's a certain amount of culinary independence.
 
I'm with Midnight Flyer in Graham, WA now. Rosanne flies in on Tuesday, and if all goes well, we'll make it across the Canadian Border, catch our ferry to Nanaimo and launch out of Lady Smith on Wednesday. Plan to be at Friday Harbor Thursday PM. Looking forward to meeting some of you here on the PNW coast! Colby

Heather and Harald, I'll echo what Brock and Cindie said, there are plenty of dining options in Friday Harbor, two grocery stores within walking distance and numerous excellent restaurants. The mistake I always make with FH is bringing along too much food from home, thinking that I'll eat it all onboard only to realize the truth that I actually prefer dining at the local establishments and buying treats from King's Market to eat onboard. This time I probably won't bring anything from home except a couple of ice blocks, then just play by ear once in FH.

I'll be heading to Twin Bridges Wed after work and either departing there Wed night or first thing Thurs morning, depending on Wed night traffic on I-5 and how late I get to the marina. Weather forecast is looking perfect, not too windy, no rain, and not to hot either! (if that changes you can blame me for jinxing it!). See ya'll out there!

Thanks for sharing your adventures. The kiddos with s’mores are way too cute. My wife would love to do the same but we haven’t figured out the Wordpress thing yet. How/where did you learn?

We’re learning on the fly with the blog. I tried blogging our Alaska adventure in 2016 but I had a terrible time downloading photos etc. At the time I only had a Samsung tablet. While in Ketchikan, we purchased a 13” IPAD at the AT&T store. With the IPAD, blogging seems easier. I would be happy to help you get started at the gathering. I’m a novice....but learning.
 
Gene and Margaret, your trip log and accompanying montage made fun reading, and those kids with sweet Docker dog are a hoot.

MikeR, you also summed up my food situation. I do the same thing cruising to Friday Harbor: Bring a buncha' food, graze on shore, nibble on board, haul most of it back home.

We just crossed into Whatcom Co. Squalicum Harbor here we come. It will be an afternoon of chores. Fuel, boat parts, faucet parts, showers, laundry, shopping. Egads! Let the fun begin!

Gene, we saw Reef Madness being towed along Roeder Ave near Squalicum Harbor this afternoon!
 
Big thanks to Larry Grunden for salvaging our Friday Harbor trip! We thought we might have a bent prop shaft on the Honda, which would have sidelined us for Friday Harbor. Larry borrowed a dial indicator from Derek at Bitter End Boatworks, and we were able to confirm the shaft was not bent, we have changed props and are ready to go!
 
Gene, I'll have to talk more to you at the gathering about blogging. I wanted to do the same, having some friends and family that do not do Facebook. I almost started with Google+, but think it does more of a public news feed, and I didn't really want to have my blogs go out like that. In the end, I decided for this trip to just use my thread on the Inside Passage 2018 at C-Brats. Colby
 
Pat, Glad you got your problem solved. We have a bit of plumbing to do in the morning. It’s a sink thing. It’s always something.
