You are certainly welcome to join us leaving from Sequim. So far it will be SleepyC, BullFrog and the Lighthouse Express.

That would be great! Count me in.

I'll be fine with whatever departure time you all determine. It wasn't stated, but I'm assuming you're leaving Friday morning, not Saturday.

Thanks again.

Rob,

I am glad you are joining us. More is always better...

We had not determined the day for leaving yet. However, Friday sounds marvelous to BullFrog and us. We have to await SleepyC's response though since he is our lead person.

Heintz & Diane and Rob,

Sounds like we are going to have a fleet. Great. I know it is early to plan, but just to give a rough idea of my usual crossing scheme. For a Friday morning crossing I will often launch Thursday evening and go down to the Sequim Bay State Park and over night there. The morning is pretty much wakeup, cleanup (me and the boat) and check the weather and go. It is pretty easy to be out of the bay before sunup and the water is generally pretty flat. The morning breeze will start on the bay about 1000. That is about when I like to be getting in to Cattle Pass. I figure about 2.5-3.0+ hours for the crossing, and run about 12-14 knots. Sometimes, if it is really flat, I'll stop for a bit, float and eat or just look around and enjoy the sun rise. There is generally good protection until we are out past the lighthouse, then you still have about 3/4 of the way to go. 2 shipping lanes to cross and about 28 miles. Rarely cross without seeing wildlife: seals, pilot whales, dolphin crab pots and floaty things... Those are the ones to watch for. Birds don't really stand on the water.

For this trip, I will be having my Sister and Brother in law along. They will not be sleeping on the boat with me so we will have to work out the connections but it should not be hard.

Looking forward to a fun trip and a great weekend.

That sounds fantastic, and like you have a great "system" worked out. I'm not a morning person (to say the least), but you make it sound so inviting that it even appeals to a night owl :D Neat that you invited others to buddy boat with you. I may be coming to the PNW this summer (would sure like to), but probably not early enough for the Friday Harbor gathering, darnit.

PS: I was admiring the photo in your post and I remembered that I did actually get up early once - and it was to head into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I even have photographic evidence :wink The world is pretty in the early morning; too bad the early morning has to be so... early.

Thanks Sunbeam,

It really is a beautiful time of day, and for being on the water it is a more predictable condition time. One can always leave later, it just might change the comfort of the ride.

Nice picture. Love the pastels and the soft water.... and the big burly tug juxtaposed.

Nice.

Harvey,

It all sounds fine. You have the local knowledge, so whatever you think is appropriate will be ok with me. I'm a morning person, so I look forward to getting some good sunrise photos.

I'll be putting my boat in at Swantown Marina in Olympia and cruising up from there Thursday morning. I'll most likely stay Thursday night in Sequim Bay as well. I assumed I'd be staying at John Wayne, but am glad to hear that you can overnight at the state park.

This is a general question about the get-together at Friday Harbor. Are there any activities / day-trips / etc I'll be missing out on by not having a dinghy?

No you can walk to everything. I plan to do some shrimping and fishing but that will be from the 27 not a dinghy. In fact I am leaving the dinghy and bringing the kayaks.

Capital Sea will make the run by water from Johnson Point (Olympia area) on Thursday and will depart Sunday or Monday. Looking forward to it!!! Sun, Prawns, good times on the dock ahh. :smiled

Looking forward to this weekend CBGT. I will plan on being at the Sequim Bay State Park on the boat over night and will plan on leaving from there, then making a stop at John Wayne on the way out of the bay. Will be meeting my sister at JWM, before leaving to cross the strait. I will be checking Cattle Pass tides, Strait of Juan currents, sun rise times and put together a plan and then post it here.

For Thursday, a get together for a dinner would work. We could meet at Black Bear Diner. Easy access, good parking, and decent food. If that works we may need to look at the times, consider the launching times ant transportation if anyone is coming in to JW marina on the boat.

More planning to be done. Sounds like fun ahead.

Harvey,

I'll give you call on Thursday, May 16th as soon as we arrive at the Sequim Bay State Park. Dinner at the Black Bear sounds great.

A couple of questions as we are not familiar with the Sequim area:
* Do we have to call ahead and get reservations for the dock space?
* Do we leave our tow vehicles at the Sequim State Park for the Friday Harbor gathering duration?

Thanks

Heinz & Diane

You guys are in luck! The current at Cattle Pass is virtually slack from 5 AM to 11 AM! The highest current flow that day is 0.7 knots. Never seen that before. Now if the wind stays down, you're in for a smooth ride.

It's probably best to launch at John Wayne Marina and leave your rig in the South parking lot there. If you're going to be there past the 72 hour limit, just ask Ron, the Harbormaster nicely and he'll most likely allow an extra day or so.

WOW Roger, nice job on the Cattle Pass current. Thanks.

Like Roger said, Launch and retrieve at John Wayne marina is going to be best. I only go down the bay to the State Park to overnight, mainly because I use an annual state park pass. You can overnight at John Wayne if you want. I can check on the rate and if they will take reservations. I believe they do, but don't know fir sure. Have never done that. Drop in overnight was about $30 if I remember right. Again, I will check on that too.

Beautiful day on the water today.

BTW, the channel 28 radio check worked for me, just outside of Sequim Bay outer marker, (Buoy#2). That was cool since it is in Friday Harbor.

Harvey,

We are easy going, we will accept your recommendation with regards to marinas as long as the marina will accommodate us for the extended storage of our tow vehicles for the duration of the Friday Harbor gathering.

Thanks

Heinz & Diane

Just checked the signup. 40 boats signed up with only two of them, (that I know of), coming boatless. This is looking to be one of the biggest ever! Now if I can only find my sun dance music . Remember, no need to call for moorage individually, they put us all together. And, if you do not have a name tag, PM Roger of Dreamer who has kindly offered to make name tags one last time since Dreamer, AKA the mothership, now lives in Southern California. The most we've ever had was 42 boats and this may have our largest ever north of the border contingent, with three Canadian brat boats already signed up.
